Description
Beirut, 1985. Amid the destruction and chaos of the Lebanese Civil War, romantic and idealistic fifteen-year-old Hoda longs for love above all else.
Believing they are safeguarding their daughter’s honor, Hoda’s parents force her into an arranged marriage with Tony, a man more than twice her age. Swayed by his generous gifts and attention, Hoda believes Tony’s promises of a better life away from her shattered city. But will her marriage be the fairytale she dreams it to be? Bound by religious law and familial duties, Hoda must play the hand she was dealt: to be a devoted wife, a good mother, and a faithful daughter, even if it means remaining silent about the truth.
A tender, thought-provoking tale of female identity and finding one’s voice, Veil of Silence is a powerful story of love and loss, tradition and independence, and the redeeming quality of friendship and family.

Advance Praise
“If you wonder what dreams are made of, you are in for a surprise with Abi-Saab’s, Veil of Silence. If you’ve ever asked yourself whose dream you are living, read this novel.” —Barbara Sapienza, author of Anchor Out, The Laundress, and The Girl in the White Cape
“Through the lens of one family and its traditions, author Danielle Abi-Saab depicts life’s triumphs and agonies during the ongoing Lebanese Civil War. In Veil of Silence, she probes the culture that adheres to ancient customs even at the approach of the 1990s, and she does so touchingly and unflinchingly. Layered with the protagonist’s intimate experience is the impact of heritage, and we as readers harvest a poignant masterclass in historical fiction.” —Diane Dewey, author of Fixing the Fates
“Veil of Silence is the beautiful, unflinching sage of Hoda, a remarkable young woman alone in the world, trapped in an arranged marriage in a repressive society, played out against the backdrop of civil war. Hoda’s longing for love and peace and her courage to persevere—against all odds—kept me rooting for her to the very end of the novel. Heartbreaking, enlightening, and inspiring. I couldn’t put it down.” —Liz Keller Whitehurst, author of Messenger
“Veil of Silence takes us into the world of a sixteen-year-old Lebanese girl, Hoda, who dreams of being married to a boy whom she loves. Thrust into an arranged marriage and without education, she is abused by a mercurial and emotionally disturbed husband while her country is destroyed by war. In this cautionary but lyrical story full of Lebanese traditions, only Hoda’s inventiveness and resilience can return her to her children and grandchildren. Hoda reminds us why all women must oppose patriarchy, war, and the loss of basic human rights.” —Susan Hewitt, author
“Danielle Abi-Saab gives us a thoughtful and moving portrait of a young girl trapped by the harsh realities of war and cultural expectations. Forced into an arranged marriage at just sixteen, Hoda never lets go of her dreams, risking everything for love and clinging to hope as she fights for independence and freedom.” —Maya Myers, author and editor

This is the story of Hoda a Christian teenager from Ain El- Remmaneh in Lebanon and the story begins with her life as a 15 year old who grows up during a civil war. She has a love interest, Sami whom she dreams of marrying. Unfortunately for Hoda, her marriage is arranged with Tony (Mr Khoury) who is twice her age.
What I loved about the book:
- the writing is descriptive, and there’s a lot of dialogue which I personally love as I feel engrossed with the characters (this is important for me in a story where it is character- driven!);
- knowing what Hoda went through as a young girl, reminded me of past experiences I and some of my friends went through as teenagers, when we had our first encounters with boys or how we’d act giddy around our crushes, it was beautiful to see Hoda develop as a woman throughout and this resonated with me; and
- I learnt a lot about that communities in Lebanon with it being quite diverse (Christians, Muslims and so on)
My main criticism would be that I would have personally preferred if the book were written in 1st person for me to be able to “feel” more of the characters’ emotions.

Veil of silence by Danielle Abi-Saab is a compelling read that took me out of my comfort zone and confronted me to realities and characters far from who I am and who I know.
The beginning of the story is set in the mid 80's, during Lebanon's Civil War, where Hoda is a young fifteen year old girl aspiring to lead a life beyond the ravages of the conflict. Between tradition, religion and family guidance, she finds herself engaged to a man more than twice her age. Her unfolding story is one of deep resilience, self-discovery, survival and broken hope.
The reading of Hoda's story wasn't easy, as it came with difficult and sensitive topics, such as domestic violence, verbal and sexual abuse and psychological trauma. Despite this, I found myself reaching for this book to turn page after page, wishing to escape the ever so real feeling of emprisonment and powerlessness Hoda was experiencing. As a female reader, I could not help but root for her, even if we could not be more different. What I thought would be a somewhat contradictory and two-dimensional character turned out to be an honest depiction of a young girl who had much to learn from life's hardest battles. My emotional response to the different characters surrounding Hoda were strong, and I was fully invested in the turnout of this story.
While Abi-Saab's prose tends to lean into the "telling" instead of "showing" at times, her simple but compelling storytelling carried this deep and monumental story successfully and presented us with a main character far from those we meet in other books in the genre, whose arc will not soon be forgotten by this reader.
