Description
The wicker coffin remained upended where it had been dropped headfirst in the open grave. But it was the pale arm reaching from beneath – fingers curled around the woven edge – that froze the mourners where they stood.
In the rain-soaked Scottish Highlands, Detective Inspector James Corstorphine arrives at what should have been a simple funeral. Janet Knight wanted only to rest among the birdsong and wildflowers she loved. Instead, her burial becomes a crime scene when a young woman’s body is discovered in the grave.
Questioning the fractured family – a volatile soldier son, estranged religious siblings, and a healer who promises passage to the next realm – Corstorphine uncovers a devastating connection. Janet’s daughter Mary vanished from these same woods over ten years ago, leaving behind a mother who never stopped searching.
With forensics threatening to unearth every body in the woodland cemetery, Corstorphine must navigate family betrayals to discover why someone chose Janet’s grave to hide their victim. But in these silent woods where even birds have stopped singing, some secrets refuse to stay buried.
The fourth gripping DI Corstorphine mystery from CWA New Blood Dagger Longlist author and McIlvanney Prize finalist Andrew James Greig. A haunting Scottish crime thriller perfect for fans of LJ Ross, Ian Rankin, and Val McDermid.

‘Absolutely blew my socks off, it's brilliant! A real page turner that I finished in a few hours - once I had started I just didn't want to stop. Continuing from book one I really like the characters that the author has created for this series. Easy to connect with them. So this is much more than just a Police procedural. My first Andrew James Greig novel but definitely not my last! What a dark and creepy roller coaster ride, I had no idea who to trust. So many twists, turns and fantastic reveals. A cast of solid characters had me flipping pages long past my bedtime. All round great read.

A great series, showing how a small rural police force deal with serious crimes. Janet Knight has died and her family are gathered at the woodland burial site, but as the wicker coffin is lowered, an arm appears from the grave! And from there on, the intrigue does not stop with members of Janet's family coming under suspicion for various reasons, as well as the celebrant who befriended Janet while her grown up children were not around. DI Corstophine, DC Frankie, PCs Bill and Phil are all involved at every step discovering secrets that have remained hidden for a long time. At times, it feels like the investigation is stalling, and at others, it is fast paced which would reflect a real life investigation and helps this series to feel more plausible. The setting adds to the intrigue too.
