Description
Are humans the only intelligent animals on Earth?
Are we really so different from other species?
Can animals think, learn, communicate, and solve problems like we do?
Amazing Animals: Are We REALLY Different? is a British English vocabulary builder and reading comprehension practice book for intermediate ESL / EFL learners, designed to help school English learners develop academic vocabulary, critical thinking, and confident communication.
Through engaging non-fiction texts about animal intelligence, students build vocabulary through reading, listening, and discussion while exploring real scientific discoveries. This English practice book supports language development through meaningful content rather than isolated exercises.
Perfect for international school classrooms, homeschooling, independent study, and content-based English programmes, each chapter includes:
- Engaging reading comprehension passages
- Academic vocabulary development in context
- Discussion questions that encourage speaking and critical thinking
- Real scientific case studies on animal behaviour and cognition
Students will discover fascinating examples of intelligence across the animal world, from tool-using dolphins and problem-solving octopuses to communicating parrots and surprisingly creative pigs, while strengthening reading skills and expanding vocabulary.
Spoken audio recordings of selected parts of the book are also available online. These recordings help learners practise their listening skills and improve their pronunciation through speech shadowing.
This ESL vocabulary builder helps learners:
- Improve reading comprehension
- Build advanced vocabulary naturally
- Develop discussion and speaking confidence
- Explore science through English
- Engage with big questions about intelligence and the natural world
Ideal for intermediate English learners, ESL students, EFL classrooms, and teachers looking for meaningful English learning materials that combine language practice with real knowledge.
Let’s learn in English, and explore what intelligence really means!

This book is a joy for any English language teacher wanting to bring the human-animal relationship into intermediate lessons in a thought provoking and truly inspiring way. Each unit poses a question on assumptions often held about our fellow creatures. Then, along with beautiful visuals, well constructed exercises, and inviting conversation questions, the book presents the lives and abilities of non-human animals, prompting reflection on those assumptions. The texts are always a manageable length so as not to daunt weaker learners. They are written in accessible, high frequency but non-childish language. I would challenge any learner to consider non-human animals as merely 'things' after engaging with this book.
