Description
Stop hoping for good writing days and start creating them.
Writing advice often focuses on craft, yet most people get hung up on process. How can you be creative without waiting passively for inspiration? How do you finish the projects you start and get your creative work into the world?
The Writer’s Process offers practical, sustainable advice for the modern writer. Calling on research in creativity and flow, the book bridges the gap between the art of writing and the science of getting things done.
This anniversary edition reflects the realities of writing at this moment in time, with thoughtful guidance on integrating AI into the process, fresh updates on creativity and flow, and new experiments to try in your writing process.

“Sometimes good writing—like tap dancing—can seem like magic, a power available only to those with special gifts. In fact, it’s a series of steps, a process available to all. Like a good dance instructor, Anne Janzer shows us the way.”— Roy Peter Clark, Author of Writing Tools and Tell It Like It Is
“If you’ve ever struggled with getting your ideas out of your brain and onto something others can access (and who hasn’t?), Anne’s book is for you.” — Ann Handley, Author of the WSJ best-seller, Everybody Writes

Anne Janzer knows what it takes to write a book—she's written several and coaches writers. She also knows that the biggest obstacle is often our mindset and writing practices that don't align with our individual brain. Ten years after its original release, this revised edition of "The Writer’s Process" offers writers a way to develop a practice that taps into their strengths as both Scribe and Muse, Janzen's names for the the structured and creative drivers of writing. This framework gives writers a point of entry and allows them to lean on their inherent, stronger propensity to draw out the weaker side. Writers who tend to be overly technical learn to tease out the muse, and writers who tend to be randomly creative learn how order and structure can free them to be even more creative. The guidance allows writers to take the information provided and develop the writing practice that works best for them. This revised edition includes new information about using AI as a writing partner and the tips for making the decision are thoughtful and realistic.
Today most of us write every day to create some kind of content, from an email or blog post to long articles and books. "The Writer's Process" is quick to read that offers immediate practical steps to follow. Whether you write fiction, nonfiction, short or long form, or a bit of everything, "The Writer’s Process" can help you improve your process, resulting in better, less stressful writing. And, even if you've been writing for years and have a system, there may be a new practice to try.
I’ll be recommending this book to my clients, who often ask for best practices. It belongs in very writer's library of writing books.
Thank you to the author, Anne Janzen for offering an ARC in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

4 stars
The Writer’s Process by Anne Janzer was such a thoughtful and encouraging read. As someone who works in technical writing, AI, and content strategy, I found a lot of her insights surprisingly applicable beyond traditional “author” work. The book does a great job balancing practical advice with a realistic understanding of the emotional and mental side of writing. It never felt preachy or overly academic — more like guidance from someone who genuinely understands the craft and the challenges that come with it.
I especially appreciated the focus on sustainable writing habits, clarity of thought, and building processes that actually work long term instead of relying on inspiration alone. Some sections resonated more strongly than others, but overall I came away with useful takeaways and a renewed appreciation for the discipline behind good writing.
Thank you as well to Anne Janzer and the publisher for providing the advanced reader copy. I’m glad I had the opportunity to read it early.
Where shall I start with this beautiful piece of work. Hats of to the talented writer Anne Janzer and the whole team behind this book.
