Life seemed amazing—marked by a charmed, rapid professional ascent and early retirement, followed by an extensive spiritual enlightenment journey. An unfathomable series of events for a black kid raised in Birmingham, Alabama.  Each day brought me closer to fulfilling “my purpose,” until three words instantly shattered that fairytale in May 2020: You have cancer! Everything I had worked tirelessly for suddenly felt inconsequential. For five months, I lay essentially voiceless, my body worn from aggressive chemotherapy and radiation. Yet in those quiet, difficult days, I discovered a deeper Christian meaning of trust and surrender.
