I went into this expecting a dark fantasy story and came out slightly unwell in the best possible way, which feels like the intended experience.
This book leans hard into the “we are connected in a deeply inconvenient and emotionally disastrous way” trope, and honestly it commits to it with confidence. The bond at the centre of the story drives everything forward in a way that constantly raises the stakes, both emotionally and literally.
The characters are not making life easy for themselves at any point, which I found both frustrating and extremely entertaining. There’s a lot of tension, a lot of conflict, and a lot of moments where I had to pause and think “okay but maybe don’t do that,” knowing full well they were absolutely going to do it anyway.
The tone is darker, more intense, and very focused on the emotional and psychological weight of everything happening. It gives the story a really gripping edge that makes it hard to put down, even when things get messy.
Pacing is steady and builds well, gradually pulling everything tighter until it basically refuses to let you look away.
Overall, this was dark, addictive, and very easy to binge read in one sitting while ignoring all responsibilities like they don’t exist.

I enjoyed the read. Both books in the series (so far) are military fantasy but very dark. The writing style is tense and similar to the speed of Abercrombie's early writing. With a little alteration this series would make a neat movie. This series could use a good audiobook to make the action and story come alive.

I took a chance going for this one considering it is book 2 in the Desolate series and I haven’t read book 1 yet. While there is definitely some background that was referenced that I didn’t know all the details of, I had no trouble picking up the story in this book and enjoying it.
I felt the author’s writing was very smooth and easy to read. The description of the world, the characters and all the action really flowed well and had good pacing. It certainly kept my attention and I enjoyed my reading experience.
The storyline itself is very interesting. It is definitely dark fantasy, but not overwhelmingly so. I enjoyed the main character, whose background is mysterious and intriguing. I’m left wanting to know more about him and curious about who he is supposed to be. The rest of the cast is just as interesting with all different types of supernatural groups included. I am a fan of military fantasy, so that aspect of this I felt was well done.
I would say if you like dark fantasy, with lots of action and intrigue, you should give this one a shot. I will definitely be going back to read book 1 and also picking up the next book in the future when it comes out.
