Description
A story not simply of a humble man but of a faithful God, this beautifully written autobiography takes us behind the scenes and into the heart of one of the most influential pastors of the past century, Chuck Swindoll.
Born in rural Texas in 1934, Charles Swindoll often heard that he was a "mistake." He began stuttering in seventh grade and questioned where he fit in the world. But even as he stumbled through adolescence into young adulthood, God was working out His purposes.
In Awakened by Grace, Swindoll shares for the first time the story of how God grew a small, insecure boy into a man who delights in speaking grace and truth to millions. This book celebrates God's presence in each of our lives as we journey with Swindoll through
- a childhood spent in the shadow of World War II and with feelings of being unwanted,
- meeting the drama teacher who helped him find his voice and the sixteen-year-old girl who he's still married to after seven decades,
- a season with the Marine Corps that strengthened his leadership gifts and his faith,
- the sermon that led to the building of a worldwide ministry, and
- the joys and challenges of grounding his public life in private faithfulness.
Including wisdom gleaned from over sixty years in ministry, words he would like to speak to his younger self, and encouragement for anyone going through tough times, Swindoll reminds us that God is at work in ordinary lives, shaping us for His glory before we even recognize His hand.

Over 30 years ago, before podcasts, smart phones, and internet, I listened Chuck Swindoll's daily radio program. Along with so many other Bible Teachers of the day, he broadcasted his sermons every weekday. He always seemed very well mannered and personable, but I didn't know much about his personal life from his many sermons. I was excited to see he had a new autobiography coming out.
Finishing the book, I have a whole new respect for him. The book is very readable and keeps you reading to the last page. I enjoyed learning about his accomplishments, large and small, that built his ministry into the huge organization it is today.
I highly recommend this book to any and all!
I was really excited to see that Chuck Swindoll had written a book! I would hear his "Insight for Living" program on the radio when I was growing up. It was fascinating for me to read about his life, and I especially enjoyed how he wrote about his childhood. I had no idea he was a musician and enjoyed reading about his time playing clarinet and other instruments. His tips for living and thriving were appreciated and I found the book interesting and enjoyable.

Awakened by Grace is a powerful reminder that God’s grace is greater than our failures, fears, and limitations. Chuck Swindoll shares his life with honesty, humility, and his trademark warmth, pointing readers not to himself but to the faithfulness of God.
My favorite part is the authors transparency. I love how he talks about how God works through ordinary struggles and unexpected challenges to accomplish his will. This book is filled with Biblical wisdom and great encouragement.
