Description
The Black Hole Whisky Gang is an action-packed sci-fi western by acclaimed author Christian Klaver. Perfect for fans of Adrian Tchaikovsky and Isaac Asimov.
One last mission, on an alien-occupied earth …
Ten years after humans lost their war against superior alien forces, Earth belongs to the Nightwalkers, masters of a vast interstellar empire. To pacify humanity, the Nightwalkers have introduced the Angels, beings with an irresistible allure who are capable of physical and emotional communion unlike anything humans have experienced. For the Angels, it’s enslavement. For Earthers, it’s addictive.
One such addict is Hansa, an ex-soldier whose involvement with the Angel Wren, and her subsequent escape into the no-man’s-land of the postapocalyptic Midwest, nearly destroyed him. Now Hansa lives as a broken soul in the Nightwalkers’ employ, unable to forgive himself for his past failures.
But when, months later, Hansa receives a message from Wren begging for his help—at the same time an extremely odd band of Nightwalker gunslingers desperately seek his aid—he begins a dangerous odyssey from the deserted streets of Detroit to the most sacred heights of the Nightwalkers’ presence on Earth, and uncovers secrets that will change him and all his companions forever.

I did NOT expect an alien-occupied Detroit sci-fi western to work this well. And yet here we are.
This book was wild in the absolute best way.
What hooked me wasn't just the aliens or the post-apocalyptic setting. It was how completely different this felt from almost anything I've read lately. There is so much happening here: addiction, guilt, enslavement, survival, loyalty, redemption, and this incredibly strange group of characters thrown together on a mission that just keeps getting bigger.
Hansa especially got me. He's damaged, he knows he's damaged, and he's carrying around so much guilt that you can practically feel the weight of it. I love a character who isn't being presented to me as some perfect hero. He's messy. He's made mistakes. And when Wren comes back into the picture, you know immediately this man is about to walk straight into hell for her.
And then there are the Nightwalkers and the Angels. That entire concept fascinated me. The idea that humanity hasn't simply been conquered, but pacified through something people actually become addicted to, made the occupation so much more disturbing.
But somehow, with all of that darkness, this is also FUN.
It has that dusty western gunslinger feeling smashed together with science fiction, an alien empire, post-apocalyptic Detroit, and a group of characters I absolutely wanted to follow into whatever insanity came next.
I read a lot of books, and after a while you start recognizing the same bones underneath different stories. This one didn't feel like that. It felt weird, ambitious, gritty, and completely its own thing.
Sometimes five stars means a book was beautiful. Sometimes it means it emotionally destroyed me.
And sometimes five stars means: What in the hell did I just read, and why did I enjoy it THIS MUCH?
This is that kind of five stars.
