This was such a beautifully written historical novel. Catherine Mathis brings both the setting and the characters to life with vivid descriptions and thoughtful storytelling that made me feel completely immersed in the period.
I especially appreciated the emotional complexity of the characters. Their strengths, flaws, and personal struggles made them feel authentic, and I quickly became invested in their journeys. The historical details added richness without ever overwhelming the story itself.
This is a wonderful read for anyone who enjoys character-driven historical fiction with heart.

WOW… Leonor is one of those historical-fiction stories where you can practically feel the tension building behind every palace door.
Set in Portugal in 1367, this is a world of royal ambition, shifting alliances, forbidden love, betrayal and political manoeuvring—and right at the centre of it all is Leonor Teles de Meneses.
And Leonor?
She wants MORE.
More freedom. More influence. More power. And she is absolutely prepared to fight for her place in a world that would much rather see her remain silent.
I was completely drawn into the court intrigue. You have jealous rivals, family tensions, a difficult mother-in-law, a king caught between love and politics, and a kingdom desperately concerned with succession. Every whispered conversation feels like it could change everything. 👀👑
What I particularly enjoyed was the way Catherine Mathis brings 14th-century Portugal to life. The setting doesn’t simply sit in the background—it becomes part of the story, filled with political pressure, social expectations and the constant struggle for power.
And Leonor herself?
Ohhh, she is complicated!
Ambitious. Intelligent. Determined. Flawed.
And honestly… those are the historical characters I LOVE reading about! Give me a woman who refuses to simply accept the role society has handed her and I’m turning those pages. 📖🔥
This book had me thinking about how history remembers powerful women—and whether the stories handed down through generations always tell the whole truth.
Was Leonor a ruthless woman hungry for power… or a woman fighting to survive and make her own place in a world controlled by men?
That question stayed with me.
