Description
Carman has worn out more towns and last names than impractical shoes protecting the secret of her magic blood. But when a friend goes missing, and another is infected with a deadly spell, Carman must choose. Expose her magic blood by curing the spell—or stop the infection from spreading by killing the source…the grandmother.
Magic bounty hunter Dylan has scoured libraries of banned magic paraphernalia seeking a method to distinguish genuine witches from impersonators. He suspects unorthodox librarian Carman might hold this information tighter than the hair he’s dying to unleash from her bun. With a past as hidden as his sleeve of tattoos, Dylan discovers he’s been used to gain Carman’s trust and their passion risks more than mixing mortals and magic.

Enter a world where magic is outlawed and if you are found to have magic paraphernalia or casting spells, good or bad, you will be arrested. Carmen is the granddaughter of a powerful witch, but has been moved from town to town under false names with her mother most of her life to escape being arrested. During her job as a librarian, really a gatekeeper of sorts to magical items, she meets Dylan. Dylan is a magic hunter that has had a terrible experience with magic in the past. There is an undeniable attraction between them, but Carmen knows it will put her and her mother's life at risk to allow a relationship with him. Carmen also finds out that those she loves are in danger and she has to figure out how to save them before it's too late. This was a very enjoyable paranormal read! Carmen was very likable and you really root for her. I was given an advanced ecopy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. |

I love the catchy title to this book and knew I had to read it. Books which are light-hearted but still with a meaty plot are one of my favorite types of books. They lift you out of a funk, and make life seem not as sad. I am happy to report that this book does just that. It is light-hearted and fun, with interesting characters and plot. Both the main characters, Carman and Dylan, were easy to like characters, and I had fun watching Carman torment him. I’m looking forward to getting to know the other characters better in upcoming books. Now, let’s get to the not so good things which aren’t too overwhelming. This book could have used more editing. In the beginning, I was confused about a couple of characters and how they related to everyone, and the writing seemed a bit stilted. After everything seemed to get moving, though, the book moved quickly and was a great read. Every once in a while, in the later parts of the book, there were places where it was confusing and it pulled me out of the story, but they were infrequent and wasn’t too bad. Please give the book a read, because I think this series has lots of potential. 3 ½ stars. Thanks to NetGalley and The Wild Rose Press/Backlit PR for the free ebook in exchange for an honest review. This same review will be posted on both Goodreads and Amazon. |

In the world the book is set in Magic has been deemed dangerous and illegal. Carmen is a low level witch (or so she believes). Her friend Ellie and her grandmother Louise are mortals and are in trouble. They are being devoured by a soul-sucking spell. Carmen is trying to find a way to cure them without getting in trouble. In walks Dylan who works for the MBH (Magic Buster Hunters). He has been sent to investigate a stash of magic items being held in the Library basement. He knows something is up with Carmen but cannot quite put his finger on it. But she does looks really good in that skirt. He fights is attraction to Carmen and Carmen uses it to gain access to the magic items in the basement. If Carmen doesn't fix this spell it can spread and affect others and destroy the world if only she could fight her attraction to Dylan. The title is a bit off putting and really does not tell you much of what the book is about. The book was a bit of a slow build but by the middle I enjoyed it and wanted to find out what would happen. I received this book free in exchange for an honest review. |

Thank you to NetGalley and Wild Rose Press for the ARC in exchange for my honest review. I hate not finishing things-but this book was close. I wanted to like it but it seemed slow and I felt like I was reading a 2nd book and was missing something. I did like the characters but the interaction seemed off to me. This book was okay and not for me but I can see how others would enjoy it. It was well written I just couldn't get into the story. I put it down thinking I could come back to it in a different mood and enjoy it. But no it didn't happen. But that is not to say that you wouldn't enjoy it-so give it a go. |

I picked up Grandma Must Die by Maureen Bonatch because the synopsis drew me in. Great concept for this paranormal romance and some really fun characters. Too much detail at some points that dragged the story along. And a surprise development that I didn't see coming! A fun start to a new series. *Copy provided from NetGalley for an honest review. |

Grandma Must Die by Maureen L. Bonatch was an unusual paranormal mystery because it is set in a time when being a witch is considered a very bad thing and can get you arrested and thrown in jail forever or worse. The characters are complex and quirky; and the setting of a small town in Pennsylvania with the town citizens prejudiced against witches made for a story that had a lot of twists and turns. There was also some humor and a smoking romance that developed between Carman, a witch, and Dylan, a mortal and a magic bounty hunter. The secondary characters, Ellie, Anthony, Julia and John/Michael provided a lot of detail and many of the twists to the story. I had to keep turning the pages to find out what would happen next to Carman and her family and friends. |

Two Nerds Talking was fortunate enough to receive a free review copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. We all know you're not supposed to judge a book by its cover but I have to admit that in the case of Grandma Must Die, it was both the cover and the unusual title that drew me to this book. Grandma Must Die is set in a world where magic is a known force, known and feared. Practitioners are shunned, outcast and even persecuted. The story centers mostly around the character of Carmen a non-practicing witch living in hiding under an assumed alias. When she discovers that her best friends Grandma has been "infected" with a powerful curse, contagious to both mortals and both magic-bloods, and being unable to lift the curse herself, Carmen is faced with the impossible choice- Risk exposure by seeking out magical help to lift the curse or performing the unthinkable and killing poor old grandma before the curse can spread. Author Maureen L. Bonatch does a wonderful job at painting a paranoid and fearful world populated with beautifully fleshed out and quirky characters. Her writing style is very fun and engaging with a great underlying humorous tone. On a personal note, I found this book was not for the likes of me. Grandma Must Die has quite a few shades of paranormal romance about it which is not a bad thing...it's just not my cup of tea. That said I highly recommend this book to lovers of Paranormal Romance and Urban Fantasy. |

Review featured at www.books-n-kisses.com Ok this book made me actually laugh out loud a number of times. The humor alone is worth reading this book for but the story is worth it too. There are a lot of twists in this story. The magic is in more than the storyline but in the writing as well. Carmen is adorable. This is a quick read. It is very lighthearted so just sit back and laugh and enjoy. Disclaimer: I received a complimentary copy of the book in exchange for an honest review. |
