This would be a wonderful book to read to an elementary class--but what about as a gift to a graduating senior? Reminding him or her that home, your special place, is waiting for you no matter how far you travel?

This book is cozy and reassuring. I give it a 5!

A Forest, A Family, A Harbor, A Home captures something every child deserves: the freedom to explore the world and the security of knowing there will always be a loving place to return to.

In poetic, lyrical language, Nikki McClure introduces readers to a comforting home embedded in nature. A child arrives by boat at a place where mornings begin with birdsong, days are spent following woodland paths, and grandparents are waiting to hear about each adventure. It is a home where the child is always “liked and loved.” It is a warm refuge that feels like sipping hot cocoa while damp clothes drip and dry nearby.

The story celebrates the wonder of nature in both its peace and its chaos, but its most meaningful message is about the balance between independence and security. A child who grows up knowing they can venture out, experience every part of life, and still return to a place where they are accepted and loved has been given something wonderful.

McClure’s intricate artwork makes the book especially distinctive. She painted washi paper with black sumi ink, cut the images by hand with a knife, and created the backgrounds using ink sticks ground on an inkstone. This painstaking process produces illustrations unlike those in most picture books, with delicate details and unexpected colors waiting on every page.

A Forest, A Family, A Harbor, A Home is a thoughtful and one-of-a-kind picture book about the relationship between exploration and belonging. It would be especially meaningful for families who value nature, multigenerational connections, and stories that reassure children they can grow into their independence without ever outgrowing the safety of home.

Wow, how dare Nikki McClure make me get misty-eyed over this story. I really enjoyed the rhythm to the poem (story) and the very detailed paper-cuts. Lots of little details to absorb on a re-read. As a PNW expat myself I love how McClure's illustrations remind me of home. This book feels like the first of her stories that explores a world beyond that Olympia, WA bubble (complementary).

What a fantastic and magical book. We could all relate to the story in one way or another. Growing up, moving house, exploring the world and coming back to where we feel most at peace.
The artwork is so beautiful and I enjoyed looking at every page.
It was great to read what was involved in the artwork process. A great little addition at the end of the book.

Nikki McClure’s illustrations steal the show in <i> A Forest, A Family, A Harbor, A Home</i>, which is really saying something since her prose is so dreamy and nostalgic. McClure bases the picture book on her grandmother’s home on the
Salish Sea in Washington State. I loved it so much!
