Description
Her ancestors need her. Is she powerful enough to save them?
If Simone, a clairvoyant police cadet, doesn't solve the mystery of her family's relationship with the phantom ship, the Doirons past and present will be in peril. Only Simone can break the spell.
But when visions of a spectre morph from frustrating to overwhelming, Simone risks losing not only the career she craves, but her family's otherworldly abilities. She races to uncover her ancestors' secrets and lies, generations of witches surviving the unthinkable. In 1781, Sébastienne's spellcasting leads to accusations of witchcraft she must escape to save her sister from a treacherous marriage proposal. In 1719, Yvonne leverages her influence over the shadows to shield her daughter from a spymaster's threats.
And all the while the phantom ship waits, blazing in a hidden cove in Prince Edward Island, calling through the generations. Simone must protect her family's legacy, or be forever haunted by the phantom ship.
In this companion to A Sea of Spectres, author Nancy Taber has created a fast-paced and thrilling adventure full of folklore, history…and witches.

A Cove of Witches is an atmospheric, character-driven, multi-generational story inspired by the history and folklore of Prince Edward Island, weaving together witches, pirates, family secrets, and the mystery surrounding Captain Kidd's treasure.
One of my favourite aspects of the novel was its focus on its characters and their stories. Moving between Simone in 2026, Sébastienne in 1780, and Yvonne in 1719, the story explores generations of women whose lives are connected across time. I enjoyed watching these individual stories unfold and seeing how the past continued to influence the present.
The atmosphere was another highlight for me. The combination of the cove and the ghost ship created an eerie and immersive feeling throughout. And the significance of a wooden cross, crescent moon, and driftwood carried seamlessly throughout the story. I especially enjoyed the moments that made the ship feel almost like a character itself.
I also loved the way the novel plays with the idea that the past can continue to communicate with those in the present, particularly through the significance of November 15 and the messages that could be received each year. There were many lines in the book that stood out to me, but one in particular I continue to think about: "Stories never end, the simply take a different path", and this line feels especially fitting for the story.
Overall, A Cove of Witches is an atmospheric, character-driven read that blends folkore, witchcraft, family history, and mystery across generations. I think readers who enjoy immersive stories centred around complex characters, generational connections and a strong sense of place will find a lot to appreciate here.
This fantastic magical Historical Fiction is set in Prince Edward Island during three separate timelines. It follows the maternal family line of women with supernatural witchy powers.
From the mother, daughter and female friend who fled France to settle this new colony in the New World, to a pair of sisters several generations passed, to a family of multiple generations 250 years ahead to our present. These women are connected by a shipwreck in the early 1700s. The generations find each other through time and work together to solve what threatens their history.
I absolutely loved this book!
