Description
Colleges and universities are confronting one of the most disruptive periods in modern history. Enrollment declines, financial pressures, changing student expectations, workforce disruption, rising student mental health needs, and the rapid emergence of artificial intelligence are reshaping the foundations of higher education.
The Future of Higher Education: Strategic Leadership for Academic Transformation examines these intersecting forces and offers a clear framework for navigating institutional change. Drawing on nearly two decades of leadership experience across public and private institutions, Eric Klein, PhD, presents actionable strategies that help academic leaders move beyond reactive crisis management toward thoughtful, mission-driven transformation.
Organized around understanding the landscape, leading through change, and adapting to the future, the book addresses the challenges confronting provosts, deans, department chairs, and senior administrators. Each chapter integrates current research, real-world leadership experience, and practical tools that support strategic planning, decision-making, and institutional innovation.
As colleges and universities redefine their role in a rapidly evolving society, The Future of Higher Education provides a forward-looking road map for leaders committed to sustaining institutional relevance, strengthening student outcomes, and shaping the future of higher education.

As a professor and student advocate, I couldn’t read The Future of Higher Education: Strategic Leadership for Academic Transformation by Eric Klein without thinking about what these changes mean for the students in our classrooms right now. Enrollment shifts, financial pressures, mental health needs, policy changes, evolving student expectations, and AI aren’t separate conversations on a campus. They overlap, and the decisions institutions make about them shape students’ experiences.
Klein makes a strong case for looking beyond the next crisis. Leaders have to make decisions without knowing exactly what comes next, but uncertainty can’t become an excuse to put off the hard conversations. For me, that was the urgency of this book: higher education is changing, and students are already living with the effects of how institutions respond.
I’d recommend this to faculty and academic leaders who want to think seriously about where higher education is headed—and about the people their decisions will affect along the way.
I received an advance reader copy through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
