“Dark, dirty, delightful. Jennifer Vaughn creates a cast of flawed, compelling characters and a plot wound tighter than a 12-day clock. Don't bother with a book mark. You won't stop The Throw Away Girls once you start.”

Midwest Book Review

Fans of novels that feature high-octane action and powerful female protagonists will quickly realize that the characters and nature of Throw Away Girls represents the embodiment of passion and purpose in the form of reporter Jaycee Wilder, who sets out to snag a big story and a bigger career in Los Angeles.

She gets more than she bargained for, however, when a series of murders draws her from her safe role as a reporter into the more dangerous world of an involved investigator edging ever closer to a clever killer.

Throw Away Girls doesn't open with Jaycee's perspective, however: shockingly, it documents a murder in progress, immediately letting readers know that violence and danger will permeate the story line, which is not a powder-puff piece for light mystery readers.

This killer specializes in the seedy kinds of girls who frequent nightclubs; so in order to break the story, Jaycee must track dangerous, savvy killer whose methodology and expertise in murder is only part of his cunning in knowing how to disappear and how to observe, from a safe distance, Jaycee's increasing involvement in the hunt.

At times it feels like the roles of predator and prey is continually switching, and that's because each protagonist faces a worthy, equal opponent in the other. And so a cat-and-mouse game evolves that keeps Jaycee - and readers - on their toes as a dangerous romp through the seedy side of life embraces agony, awareness, and the Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde life of a family man by day, who is a passionate killer by night.

Is Jaycee about to become a "Throwaway Girl" in the killer's limelight? Evidence warns her of the danger ("If she wasn’t in the throes of a big story, using insider information, and about to reveal even more about a killer on the loose, she’d consider this a coincidence. Some crazy guy letting her know he thought she was hot. But then she flipped the picture around and all hope of bad cosmic timing was lost. No, this was intentional, a killer’s way of telling her to back off in bold red pen."), but her response is to not only persevere, but adopt a level of cunning equal to that of her opponent.

In such a game, who will win? There are no pat answers and no quick solutions, and readers of detective fiction who like well-developed characters, twists of story line, and engrossing moves and counter-moves will love the approach of Throw Away Girls, which takes a brutal vigilante's personal quest for justice and blends it with a savvy reporter's passion for her job.

Readers enthusiastic about smart, successful, creative female protagonists will find themselves rooting for Jaycee's ultimate success and chafing at the many obstacles and increasingly insurmountable hurdles she faces in the process of playing a dangerous game.

Kirkus Review

In Vaughn’s (Last Flight Out, 2011) thriller, a Los Angeles television reporter puts herself in danger while investigating a serial killer who targets sex-club patrons.

Jaycee Wilder is an Emmy-winning investigative reporter who chases down stories with her photographer and friend Ben Roderick. She lives with Van, a bartender and occasional bit-part actor in forensics-heavy shows such as CSI: Crime Scene Investigation and Law & Order, and he likes to comment on her stories using insights he’s gleaned from such TV shows. After Jaycee learns that three women have been murdered within six months in underground “fantasy adult nightclub” settings, she suspects a serial killer: “These are not cases of rough sex going too far. He’s making them bleed,” she tells Van. She also says as much to the LAPD’s lead detective on the case, James Barton, who’s battling alcoholism after an on-the-job tragedy. The two agree to work together so that Jaycee can get an exclusive story and Barton can get professional exposure. He tells her about the killer’s message, which was scrawled in each victim’s blood: “Throw Away Girl.” Jaycee investigates and gets useful information from a sex-club operator, but then she gets a message from the killer warning her to back off. Will she help track down the dangerous psychopath—or will she become his next victim? Vaughn, a TV news anchor for WMUR in Manchester, New Hampshire, uses her own background to enrich the story with authentic insider details about TV reporting, and her prose is solid.

What an amazing story! I felt like a cat being led by a string. I just couldn't stop myself from following and couldn't put the book down. Jaycee is a reporter that actually feels empathy for the people behind the stories on which she reports. Barton is the cop who's seen better days but is trying to get a fresh start. Jaycee is a bit harsh with her boyfriend Van and initially takes him for granted. Life, however, has a way of opening up your eyes. I kind of guessed who the killer was because the author peppers the book with hints. I was hoping I was wrong. Still had me at the edge of my seat. Can't wait for book two!

I love this book mainly because it has a strong female as the lead character. I would love to see more novels featuring Jaycee, as I became attached to her while reading the book. I was worried about her throughout the book, and I'm glad things worked out for her. Okay, the book. I liked it! I like how everything played out. I didn't guess the killer's identity until close to the end, which was awesome! I hate when it's blatant, but the author still tries to keep it hidden. As I said, I really got attached to the main character and I cheered for her throughout the whole book, trying to figure out how she was going to get out of each sticky situation. I highly recommend this book to other mystery/thriller lovers.

I borrowed this from Netgalley because the title intrigued me, and then the synopsis blew me away. this is a female crime writer and she is writing pretty gruesome scenes! I am not a sexist by the way, it is just that Jennifer Vaughn has succeeded in making gory details stand out, she is a genius when it comes to mind games.

I mean it, Jaycee Wilder is a reporter in Los Angeles, and she has hit a story: girls have been murdered near a special club. She sees this as a chance to finally move into investigative reporting, despite her editor's reluctance to put a girl on a gruesome case. Quickly she made friends with the detective, James Barton, who has issues of his own.

I call this a psycho thriller because the killer is psycho, and Vaughn lets us into his head as he searches for prey and succeeds. When he found out that Jaycee is onto the case, he tries to warn her off. Let's call him Slade, as it is one of the nicknames he used. Slade is cunning, and he is also meticulous when it comes to planning his target and kill. It is scary to get into his head, and scarier still as you do not know who is Slade until the end.

Throw Away Girls is indeed a great mystery and thriller that I have read this year, and will definitely recommended it to anyone who is into stories that has gore and sick minds. Jaycee plays the part of amateur sleuth wonderfully, using her reporter's instincts and friendly demeanor to breakdown barriers that Barton seemed to be unable to do. For a first book, this is a good story to start off, as well as a good introduction to all the key characters that will be in the series from here on.

I will definitely be on a look out for more Jaycee Wilder, I hope that she will grow into a skilled investigative reporter one day.

A special thank you to Waldorf Publishing and NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review. Nice Cover!

Jennifer Vaughn introduces THROW AWAY GIRLS her first in the gritty psychological suspense mystery: Jaycee Wilder Series -an ambitious LA news reporter finds herself in the middle of a brutal crime investigation, and at the hands of a dangerous psycho serial killer. A monster who throws away girls like the garbage, and uses their blood to leave a message.

ThrowAway: “A thing intended or destined to be discarded after brief use or appeal.”

Jaycee Wilder is a smart and tenacious television news reporter in Los Angeles and currently dating Van. Van slings drinks at a West Hollywood nightclub several nights a week only until he became the next Bradley Cooper.

She works with her news director, Clare and partner, Ben. Jaycee believed that in order to give proper coverage to a murder victim, she needed to get to know her. Something every reporter did on the weekends. She meets up with Detective James Barton LAPD Homicide—leading the charge to find Zoe’s killer. (an interesting character). They would work together to find the psychopath. .

This would make the third murder in six months. Three women butchered, no-holds-barred, stranger-on-stranger sex shops. The latest is a woman, Zoe is in her mid-twenties.

Fantasy adult nightclubs in Los Angeles. Two other women, Sarah and Mackenzie, were also murdered in locations near or along Hollywood Boulevard. He is making them bleed. A gory slaughter that implied murder over mishap, and she was intrigued.

Jaycee and Van talk about scenarios at home, since he occasionally gets bit parts on TV shows. Ever since a stint on Criminal Minds, Van had Jaycee believing that in order to give purpose he convinced himself a hard-edged crime sleuth. This time the story was for real.

These girls were not slutty skanks. Zoe was a well-liked educator and a beloved daughter. Sarah a waitress, and Mackenzie a single mom raising four- year-old twins. Each young woman had a loving supportive family that had professed shock upon hearing the details of their deaths.

These girls had ventured into dark caverns where pleasure and pain intertwined with one’s own exploitation. In a cold place that invited the darkest parts of a person’s soul out to play. Jaycee is dying for an interview with the family to discuss their double life, to help determine their connection with the killer.

Each time the killer strikes he uses his victims blood to leave a message, “Throw Away Girl.”

We hear from the unidentified killer who appreciates the full color spectrum of a woman’s beauty. He loves women. But sometimes he had to kill them. Only some of them. The bad ones.

As Barton, Jaycee, and the team get closer to determining the killer's identity, Jaycee is in danger. Will she be the psychopath’s next victim after she receives a message from the killer to back off? What does he have in mind for her, since she does not fit the profile?

Detective James Barton, a little rough around the edges, was a one- time hero cop. Now a survivor in his own right. Of course, Barton was not accustomed to a pretty and smart reporter providing key points of a murder investigation to him.

As most sociopaths, they disguise themselves as an everyday person. Mysterious and evil, a Jekyll and Hyde. However, what dark abuse lurks in their past to turn them into twisted brutal killers? Will they stop him before he kills again?

Chilling and suspenseful with a calculating villain at the center of a well-crafted plot, flawed characters, and sharp dialogue to keep readers guessing. Dark and twisty, as the intrigue unfolds, tension mounts in this outstanding start to Vaughn’s new series. Her expertise shines in this gripping novel; and what a delicious cliffhanger, keeping readers salivating for the next installment.

Vaughn, a TV news anchor for WMUR in Manchester, New Hampshire, puts her experience to splendid use, to enhance the story, with authentic insider investigative detailed reporting; keeping the suspense and intensity high.

By employing her keen skills, she maneuvers between characters smoothly, and crafts a wild labyrinth of exciting twists, turns, and surprises. Readers who crave mystery, and dark twisty psychological crime suspense will be impressed by the first installment, of her new exciting series!

For fans of Sandra Brown, JT Ellison, Mary Burton, Hank Phillippi Ryan, Lis Wiehl, and Karin Slaughter.

My Review:
The book starts out with a young woman fighting for her life in a place she's embarassed to be found. We listen to the dialogue between the young woman and her tormentor. Then we are in her thoughts as she nears her death and she's thinking of the people who love her.

From the intensity of that scene to the young couple you meet next is like flipping a switch. But this is Jaycee and her boyfriend, Van. Jaycee is a news reporter for a local TV station and the news story about the death of a young woman catches her eye. It captures her mind as well. This is the third such death in a short period of time. She feels sure this is a serial killer, but nothing has been said by news or police. Why? When she gets to work, she convinces her boss to let her have the follow up on the story. She and her trusty photographer take off to investigate.

Jaycee gets deeply involved in the case as the body count rises and things get more dangerous. Things get more personal and the people around her try to get her to back off from the investigation. Even the cop she's working with warns her to be careful. Her photographer keeps trying to get her to handle other stories. She gets a message from the killer. Her boyfriend is missing. She knows who the killer is.

Get this book and read it this weekend! It's really a great read. I look forward to more Jaycee Wilder stories from Jennifer Vaughn. I have to be honest, my initial interest was because Jennifer works for my local station. Yay, Jen!

I received a free ARC copy of this book from NetGalley and Waldorf Publishing in exchange for an honest review.

I couldn't put Throw Away Girls down; I promised myself I would only read for an hour, but by the time I looked up, half the day was gone! It was twisted and gritty without losing its humanity, which is difficult to manage in our adrenaline-junkie society. My sister saw Throw Away Girls in my Waldorf Publishing catalogue and asked me what I thought about it. I'm glad I could recommend it to her with enthusiasm and a clear conscience and she's really looking forward to getting her own copy and checking it out for herself. I'm eagerly anticipating the next installment in the series. This book should be a big hit with Criminal Minds fans too!

The premise is intriguing. I love all things horror, thriller, and suspense. I like taut thrillers. I also (like everyone else) don't necessarily like to guess right away who the killer might be. The execution could use a little work. But all in all, great read. I highly recommend.

what did I think of it:
first off I want to say that while I liked it I didn't love it, it took me a while to get in to the story , and I think the reason was I just didn't like the main character at first but the more I read of the story I being to actually like her, one of the things I did like about this story was the author's writing , because once I did finally get pulled in to story I just couldn't stop reading it, I do have to that I did in fact love the other characters a hole lot more then Jaycee but like I said at first I just couldn't like her, but by the end of the story she some how become one of my favorite characters , I think why that happened was because of how strong she was to help the girls and their families find justices for them , with that said I would like to say thinks to Netgalley for give me a change at find a new author to check out.

First, thank you to NetGalley for the copy of this book in return for a fair and honest review.

There's a fine line between passion and obsession and with the murder victims found in the seediest of nightclubs, Jaycee Wilder is having a hell of a time walking that line. She just can't let these victims be known for how they died without telling the stories of who they were in life. She can't help trying to understand the sick mind of a murder who labels his victims as worthless and she can't shake the feeling that she's walking a bit too close to be comfortable.

With a detective carrying his own scars and a boss with an attitude, much of Jaycee's investigation is known only to her but will this secret sleuthing cause her to star in her own story?

Jennifer Vaughn has done a great job in drawing you in to this mystery and tugging you along to the surprise ending. Great read for those who like a bit of a twist to their read.
