Description

Not every fairy-tale kingdom lies above ground.

Laurel came to the forest hoping a solo retreat might quiet her anxieties, her disappointments, and the nagging sense that life has somehow passed her by. Then she meets Nitch: strange, elegant, irresistible Nitch, who knows the hidden language of mushrooms, walks with a fox at his heels, and promises to show her wonders no ordinary hiker has ever seen.

Beneath the roots of an ancient maple, Laurel enters a glittering subterranean world of glowing fungi, crystal rivers, moonlit balls, and beautiful, inhuman revelers. Nitch calls himself the Mountain King, and in his arms, Laurel begins to wonder whether she has stumbled into a dream—or the fairy tale she has been waiting for.

But the deeper she descends, the more enchantment curdles into danger. For the Mountain King’s kingdom has survived for centuries on secrets, seduction, and sacrifice—and Laurel may be exactly what it needs next.

A Note From the Publisher

M. LaRose wrote her first story while in first grade: a thriller titled The Peach-Fuzz Monsters. Unfortunately, that story was lost to the sands of time when her parents failed to preserve the manuscript. Today, M. LaRose writes paranormal romance inspired by human passion and the mysteries of nature. Kirkus Reviews called her debut novel, The Flower Eater, a “delightfully entertaining story of how one woman’s effort to destroy helps her learn how to save.” Her second novel, Lost in the Hall of the Mountain King, was a quarterfinalist in the Screencraft 2019 Cinematic Book Competition. M. LaRose lives with her husband in the green mountains of Vermont.

Advance Praise

"I really enjoyed the imaginative direction of Lost in the Hall of the Mountain King by M. LaRose. What starts out feeling like a quiet story about a woman trying to find herself gradually turns into a much stranger paranormal adventure [...] The glowing mushrooms, crystal caves, underground river, unusual elves, and mysterious time shifts gave the book a dreamlike atmosphere [...] A very imaginative and unusual read that blended romance, fantasy, and adventure in a way that kept me curious." — Readers' Favorite
