Advance Praise
Mr. Waldorf is off to Texas. But he's somehow lost his spectacles and he can't see very well without them. He asks us to help him find his spectacles, but in the meantime, Mr. Waldorf is going to do some sightseeing and have a little fun. He connects with real cowboys in Dallas and learns some new moves in country dancing. He even plays a little bit of football and, when he arrives in Austin, he tastes some hot sauce ... only to find that it's too hot for him. And still, Mr. Waldorf can't find his spectacles. However, he doesn't let that get him down and he enjoys his travels through the state of Texas, and he shares with the reader all of his experiences and all that he learns about the people and the history of Texas.Beth Ann Stifflemire and Barbara Terry have created a lovely, educational picture book about Texas. The Spectacular World of Waldorf: Mr. Waldorf Travels to the Great State of Texas is very colorfully illustrated with lots of interesting images to complement the story. The plot follows Mr. Waldorf's travels through the state, with occasional references to his missing spectacles, which the reader will often see on the page accompanied with an image relevant to that part of the story, like the spectacles flashing out of an giant oil derrick near Houston. There are a lot of big words in this story, but each word is presented in such a way that the young reader not only learns the new word, but also understands what it means. This is a fun and educational book for young readers, with lots of great illustrations to carry the story along.Reviewed by Emily-Jane Hills Orford for Readers' Favorite
"Vibrant images meet entertaining geography lesson. Young readers will be dazzled by this beautifully illustrated and adventurous series featuring one curious canine with a clumsy yet adventurous spirit. In pure Dora The Explorer fashion, Mr. Waldorf enlists each reader to assist him as he makes his way from one famous landmark to the next, making friends and trying new things along the way. Barbara Terry and Beth Ann Stifflemire have crafted a furry world traveler that children, and their parents, will look forward to hearing from--one adventure at a time." Jennifer Vaughn, Emmy Nominated Award Winning TV News Anchor-WMUR, Author of Last Flight Out and Throw Away Girls.
"The best way to learn is when you don't realize you are learning at all! That is how kids will feel as they go on adventures with Mr. Waldorf. These books engage and encourage the reader to help Mr. Waldorf, all while teaching great lessons about geography and cultures of the different places he visits. I wish my daughters were still young enough to learn from these adventures!" Dan Jansen, Olympic Gold Medalist-Speed Skating.
"Mr. Waldorf exposes young children to diversity and language in an adventurous and colorful format. Expand your child's knowledge of other cultures by joining Mr. Waldorf on his adventures." Amy Gensler, M.A., CCC-A, LSLS Certified AVT Audiologist & Auditory-Verbal Therapist
Mr. Waldorf is a canine who loves to travel. Gussied up in cowboy boots, checkered shirt, and jeans, he's dressed for success in Texas in this children's picture book story of a sight-impaired dog who can't read the huge sign that points the way to Dallas.
Mr. Waldorf invites young readers to help him find his reading glasses in the course of this journey, but his sight doesn't prevent him from making new friends and meeting real cowboys who herd cattle down the big city's streets.
A fun, chatty, zany series of encounters juxtaposes a search for missing spectacles with a series of lively yet impossible encounters as Mr. Waldorf makes the most of Texas cultural legends, from sports to country western dancing, and travels to Austin and beyond.
Gorgeous color drawings and a fun, whimsical blend of Texas culture and a search for what should be obvious makes for a picture book story that's an engaging and fun read, highly recommended for kids with good reading skills and parents who may task themselves with read-aloud just to enjoy the fun antics of Mr. Waldorf as he explores Texas.
