Inspired by the incredible true story of one Jewish family separated at the start of World War II, determined to survive—and to reunite—We Were the Lucky Ones is a tribute to the triumph of hope and love against all odds

“Love in the face of global adversity? It couldn't be more timely.” —Glamour

It is the spring of 1939 and three generations of the Kurc family are doing their best to live normal lives, even as the shadow of war grows closer. The talk around the family Seder table is of new babies and budding romance, not of the increasing hardships threatening Jews in their hometown of Radom, Poland. But soon the horrors overtaking Europe will become inescapable and the Kurcs will be flung to the far corners of the world, each desperately trying to navigate his or her own path to safety.

As one sibling is forced into exile, another attempts to flee the continent, while others struggle to escape certain death, either by working grueling hours on empty stomachs in the factories of the ghetto or by hiding as gentiles in plain sight. Driven by an unwavering will to survive and by the fear that they may never see one another again, the Kurcs must rely on hope, ingenuity, and inner strength to persevere.

An extraordinary, propulsive novel, We Were the Lucky Ones demonstrates how in the face of the twentieth century’s darkest moment, the human spirit can endure and even thrive.

Wow!! What an absolutely powerful and moving novel! I've read many WWII novels, and many based on actual events, but never have I read a book like this. Georgia Hunter masterfully wrote (based on her own family history) We Were the Lucky Ones which centers around the Kurc family before, during and after the Second World War. The Kurc's are a jewish family originally from Poland, and throughout the novel we read about the horrific journey they endured. The unimaginable situations that they were forced to withstand were heart wrenching, but by some miracle the family never lost faith that they would somehow make it out of their circumstances alive. Having been separated, the family members had no clue what happened to each other, and in a time when the likelihood of even one family member surviving was slim, they still held onto hope.

I am in complete awe of the Kurc family!! I am so glad that Georgia Hunter took her family's journey and shared it with us---what a gift! Throughout the novel I felt through Ms. Hunter's words all the admiration and love she holds for them. Just when I thought I was coming to the end of this book, I got to the author's note!!! I had to read the author's note twice because the first time I couldn't stop sobbing (mostly tears of joy)--simply magnificent! I can't express enough what an amazing book We Were the Lucky Ones is--a complete and total 5+++ star read! I don't say this lightly, but if you buy 1 book this year make it this one!! I can promise you will not regret it, once you finish, this will most definitely be a book you tell all of your friends and family to read!
