These books have a few key things in common: Beautiful photographs, up close and personal, and engaging text. The graphic design is modern and features sidebars, additional information, info graphics, and other “interrupters” that help to maintain the reader’s interest. This is readable non-fiction for elementary schoolers at its best, whether it’s the chapter books, the themed books, or the more encyclopedic ones.
My almost-10-year-old was especially captivated by Strange, Unusual, Gross, and Cool. It was perfect for her age group, which is so often interested in the…shall we say, unusual? The blob fish is a big favorite. Both this one and the Animal Atlas are also written at a slightly higher Lexile level, so are especially suited to the higher end of their suggested age range. But if a child can’t quite handle the text, never fear, because those images really are worth 1000 words.

Who might like these books:
Animal lovers of whatever age. Anyone who likes to pass their time learning more about the amazing animals on our planet. Lovers of nature photography. Trivia fans.

Possible objectionable material:
Ummm…the animals are naked? (Especially the naked mole rats!)

Thank you, NetGalley, for providing e-book advanced reader copies of all of these wonderful books.

Animal Planet: Baby Animals, by Dorothea Deprisco is an adorable and informative book that features more than 200 photos of baby animals and their families. Some of the baby animals featured are spotted owlet, red panda, angora rabbit, northern raccoon, and sea otter.

As a part of the Animal Bites series, the book summary indicates that this book "provides kids in the first years of schooling with the perfect bite-sized view of their favorite animals. Arranged thematically with a focus on animal behavior and family relationships, young readers will explore sections about life cycles, feeding, play time, conservation, getting around, and much more."

At the beginning of the book, How to Use This Book explains what each of the colorful tabs represent. These tabs include the following: How They Grow, Where They Live, African Elephant, How They Live, Vista, Big Data, Animal Gallery, Living/Working, and Just Like Me. Also, there are Info Bites sidebars with facts about baby animals.

While featuring brilliant full-color photographs intermixed with animal facts, Baby Animals is a delightful eighty page non-fiction book, and it's geared toward children, particularly preschoolers to third graders.

Animal Planet Baby Animals by Animal Planet is an adorable book for kids of all ages! (Adults too!) It covers a variety of babies from the animal kingdom doing things baby animals do. The images are amazing, clear, and so fun. Most pages have more than 2 pictures on them. Lots of info is included, little tidbits are added tastefully here and there without being cluttered. Very well organized. Colorful, bright, and informative. The incredible images and great info is a big winner! A must have for the kid that has everything. Thanks NetGalley and the Publisher of this book for allowing me to read this astounding animal treasure!

I love books from Animal Planet.  The photos are so beautifully done.  They are also very educational.

Baby owls are so furry.  I love to go to our Aviary to look at the birds and owls have been a favorite of my.  I think the Aviary has Spotted Owlets.  I do not like Anacondas.  Maybe it was due to that movie!!  I would love to see baby sea turtles take their walk into the ocean.  It is on my to do list.  Some day!!  Wow for 20 hours on their feet (Giraffes).

Love how it talks about animal shelters and adopting a pet.  I have been seeing more and more on Sloths.  Our aviary has one.  We have had raccoons here and we live in the city.  We had cat food on our front porch.  We had to remove their food source and have not seen them since.  They were getting too comfortable on our front porch.  Not afraid of us.  I love Bald Eagles.  Love seeing them at a zoo or aviary. Gray wolves are a favorite of my.

Love the places to visit and the websites to go to for more information.  Great colorful information book!  Great for kids!

Baby animals! What’s not to love? Seriously, this is a wonderful book for kids, but adults will enjoy the incredible photography as well.

Every single page of this book is chock full of beautiful pictures and educational text that tells kids some amazing facts about the animals. For example, did you know that opossum babies are the size of a bee when they are born and that they live in their mother’s pouch for about three months? Or that giraffes spend up to 20 hours on their feet a day? There are facts like these sprinkled all throughout this book. As you admire the stunning photos, you will learn a little bit about each animal. What could be better?

What kinds of animals will you find here? A lot of books focus on baby mammals since they tend to be charming, but this book features them all. You will learn about baby mammals, birds, insects, spiders, fish, marine mammals, reptiles, amphibians, and more!

There are handy color-coded tabs that organize the book. A sampling of the tabbed subjects is as follows: how they grow, where they live, how they live, animal gallery, living/working and more. If you want to learn about a particular species, follow the yellow tabs, which give you a closeup look at a species.

There are side boxes called Info Bites that give detailed facts about an animal, such as its name, the type of animal, where it lives, and a cool fact about that animal. There are also inset boxes that ask funny questions that will appeal to the younger readers. For example, would a red panda be “sleepover-worthy?” The answer is given next to the question and each answer helps the reader understand more about the animal. For example, in this case, it says that red pandas sleep half the day in slippery trees. These insets make the learning fun and are in eye-catching colors to attract the reader’s eyes.

Full-page color photos are fun to look at and many have callout boxes to show various interesting features of the animal. Such as the “panda thumb” or the teeth that the red panda uses for chewing bamboo.

The “Vista” sections show a full two-page photo spread of a particular animal. You get to see that animal in its natural habitat, engaged in its normal behaviors. Any one of these photos would certainly be poster worthy.

Overall, I liked the design and layout of the book. The text is short and easy for young readers. The facts are clear and indicated in a manner that will help readers retain the information. I did find one mistake in the book. There is a photo on page 45 that indicates it is a baby bobcat, but the photo actually shows a baby mountain lion. For a book of this scope, with the number of photos that had to be correctly identified, I think that one error is nothing to be concerned about. It’s a great book and has very high quality layout, so I am not complaining.

Of course, there’s no denying the universal appeal of baby animals! That will make this book an instant favorite. It was a thoroughly enjoyable book and I recommend it.

I’d like to thank the publisher, author and NetGalley for providing an advance reader copy in exchange for my honest review.

Animal Planet: Animal Bite, Baby Animals by Dorothea Deprisco, Animal Planet is a book about various animal species family life. It talks about live and egg birth, how long babies stay with their parents, what they eat, where they live, how they travel and more.

The photos in this book are vibrant. They are close that you feel as if you can touch the animals.

There are some special sections on that side of the page that that include cool animal facts, simple infographics, and illustrated maps of the Earth and the habitats as well as the short bits on "All Grown Up". The special sections will invite discussion and further investigation. They even have bits on "Just like Humans" where they show how human families interact in some of the various topics.

On the top of the page there are activities, further resources and an extensive Glossary.

I received the advanced reader's copy from Time Inc. Books and Animal Planet via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

This book is exactly as the series says, Animal Bites. There are so many facts in this book that something will draw in any reader. This book describes various animal species family life. It talks about live and egg birth, how long babies stay with their parents, what they eat, where they live, how they travel and more. The photos in this book are amazing. They are so close you feel like you can touch the animals. The special sections on the side that include cool animal facts, simple infographics, and illustrated maps of the Earth and the habitats as well as the short bits on "All Grown Up" are sure to invite discussion and further investigation. They even have bits on "Just like Humans" where they show how human families interact in some of the various topics. The back of the book includes activities, further resources and an extensive Glossary. I love that a portion of the proceeds will benefit Animal Planet's R.O.A.R. (Reach Out. Act. Respond.) project which partners with leading animal organization to make the world a better place for domestic and wild animals.

This book would be a great addition to a school or class library, especially those learning about animal species, habitats, and even families.

I was captivated from beginning to end and my son loved it!
Magnificent book, fantastic photographs that will cause you emotion and expressions of tenderness, Ahhh, of laughter, of surprise ...
Puppies and baby animals look so funny, but the best thing is that they are photographed in their natural environment. It's a lovely book for kids to learn about how baby animals grow and learn. What I consider relevant are the facts about the interaction of animals with humans and the efforts of some centers to protect species and to preserve their habitats.
I found very useful that the author makes a comparison of the behaviors of the animals with behaviors of children, that may generate a very valuable approach to sensitize them to observe that the animals are intelligent and sensitive beings.
I recommend this book to astonish us along with our little ones of the wonders of life on our planet and to foster a culture of respect for wildlife and ecosystems; It can also be part of an education that shows the children that we can both appreciate and love all the creatures with whom we share the planet.
My gratitude to the Publisher and NetGalley for allowing me to review the book

Okay, so I knew getting into reading Animal Planet's Baby Animals that there was going to be much cooing and squeeing from me. I just didn't know exactly how much. Turns out, there was quite a lot. Baby Animals is the next entry into the awesome Animal Bites series from Animal Planet that aims to educate young readers about the cool things in nature around them.

Each book (Animal Babies is no exception) lays things out in simple terms, is jam-packed with lots of high-quality pictures, and is intensely engaging. Well put together, well thought out, and educational as well as just being absolutely adorable, the whole series is a must-read.

Cutest Baby: Baby Red Panda

Coolest Fact: That there are front and rear facing pouches! I would have thought they were all front-facing. (Makes total sense that they aren't, but lets just hope the rear-facing pouchers don't have gassy mommas!)

I'm glad they included: The Buddy System. It introduces young readers the proper adoption process for getting a family pet. One that begins with researching the right animal for your family.

Overall, Animal Planet Animal Babies is a worthy entry into the Animal Bites series!

This is a fantastic book. I love this series. It is very informative and the illustrations are beautiful. This is the perfect book for children because the bright photos grab their attention. My son has several of these Animal Planet books and I plan to add this one to his collection.

Sorry, but right of the bat, I am giving this book -0.5 stars for the fact it also had human kids in them. Not a lot, but it still didn't fit at all the few times it popped by. I know technically we are animals and all that, but I came here for real animals. Real baby animals. Not human kids.

But other than that little bit I definitely enjoyed the whole book. Beautiful photographs, lots of information. I loved how things were separated by topic and that we would get a few animals that fit that category (for instance Family Ties tell us about how animals teach their kids to find food/shelter and how to protect themselves). Sometimes we even get one animal that gets all the spotlight.

And it isn't just the popular animals getting the spotlight, oh no, you will find all sorts of not that popular critters as well! I definitely loved that they expanded like this, as quite often with baby animal books they go for the popular babies (cats, bunnies, hamsters, tigers, lions).

The information is nice and compact, easy to remember.

All in all, with the exception of the human kids, I really liked this book a lot and I would recommend it. Young and old will really like this one and fly through it.

Warning: Lots of cuteness. Be prepared to squee and get eyes with little hearts in them. :P
