If you knew my sister by Michelle Adams.
A slow but OK read. One I took my time to read. I didn't enjoy it but I didn't hate it either. Just no feelings. 3*.

Unfortunately, I have not been able to read and review this book.

After losing and replacing my broken Kindle and getting a new phone I was unable to download the title again for review as it was no longer available on Netgalley.

I’m really sorry about this and hope that it won’t affect you allowing me to read and review your titles in the future.

Thank you so much for giving me this opportunity.
Natalie.

Another one from my personal back list challenge shelf for 2019.

This is a creepy challenging eerie read.
The two sisters who appeared to me to be very different in make up and character although one not being raised by the mother has turned out to not be so different to me after all.

I should have read this sooner! I’m not sure why I didn’t, I had a cooy from Netgalley, a paperback Copy and now I got the set!
Because I’ve been listening to this on audio the last few days whilst journeying, doing chores etc

I’m so glad I got to read this.

I’ve now pre ordered her next book and have her other one to read.

Very talented.

I found this book difficult to read. It had an eerie and, at times, creepy feel throughout which left me uncomfortable. I did, however, persevere and finish the book but I will not be recommending it to others.

The story is about two sisters,Irini and Elle, told from the point of view of Elle, and the fact that Irini was given away by her parents to an aunt who bought her up as her own. As the story unfolds, secrets are revealed and although some are obvious, there are others that I didnt' see coming however I felt uncomfortable reading this.

I always find it slightly nerve wracking to read a book that I’ve heard so many great things about as there is always the chance that it won’t live up to its hype. I needn’t have worried though as I found My Sister to be a very gripping and enthralling read.

My Sister griped me from the start when the opening chapter threw up a series of intriguing questions. What happened all those years ago to make Irini’s parents want to give her away? Why does none of her family care if she goes to her mother’s funeral or not and most importantly of all, Why does Elle have such a hold over her sister.

As the story unfolds the reader learns more about the twisted nature of the sister’s relationship and their murky past. I found this utterly fascinating and it was very hard to put the book down as I wanted to learn more and discover the truth, The pace of the book is quite fast with a lot of action happening so the reader is never bored. I was constantly thinking about the book whilst not reading it and trying to bribe the kids so I could sneak a few more pages in. A couple of the twists I didn’t see coming and I liked that the author didn’t take the obvious route with how the story went.

My opinion of Irini changed continuously throughout the book. At times I felt very sorry for her living with her disability and her feelings of abandonment regarding being given away all those years ago. Her hurt and confusion regarding this was almost palpable at times and some of the passages relating to this were heartbreaking to read about. At other times though she really frustrated me and i felt like shouting at her as she made some really stupid decisions and let her sister control her. She was quite an unnerving character as I was never really convinced about her side of the story and if she was telling the truth as something just didn’t add up.

I really didn’t like Ellie, especially how controlling and manipulating she was towards her sister. She was a very unlikable character and I found myself hoping that Irini would stand up to her or that she would come to a sticky end.

This was a very interesting and well plotted thriller that is one of the best thrillers I have read. It kept my interest throughout the book and I thought that Michelle’s writing was brilliant and made the book very easy to read. It was my savior through sleepless nights with a poorly baby. I almost didn’t mind not getting any sleep as it meant i could read a few more pages of this fabulous book.

This is Michelle Adam’s debut book and I look forward to reading more from her. If you like unsettling, well plotted thrillers with great twists you will love this book.

Huge thanks to Phoebe Swinburn and Headline for my copy of this book and for inviting me onto the blog tour.

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for providing me with a copy of this book in return for an honest review.

This was a well written book which I thoroughly enjoyed from the first page, despite it being more of a slow burn than the type of book I am usually drawn to. By the end of the book, the characters feel almost like members of your own family. The writer manages to capture their development within the chapters that the reader truly feels that they have grown up with them.

The revelations which are unearthed by the ending are stunning. The reader will never guess which route this book is heading in. A fantastic page-turning mystery.

This book is gripping and intense with so many twists and turns. It is the story of two sisters. Irini and Elle. Irini was given to her aunt with no explanation why. Elle was kept by their parents. As the story unfolds you begin to realise why. I had trouble putting this book down. This is Michelle Adams first novel and I am so looking forward to reading her next one. Brilliant.

Imagine knowing that your parents decided not to have you around anymore, and gave you away to your aunt. No explanation, nothing. Then when your mommy dearest dies, your strange and estranged sister contacts you. I was curious to try and see how Elle figures in Irini's live and why the parents gave Irini away. It was really a thrilling read. Recommended.

I on a bit of a sibling rivalry kick right now when it comes to books and this one is right yup there with the greats. Tense, gripping and giving just enough information to keep you wanting more.

My Sister is an addictive read – I couldn’t predict where the plot was going and that keep me gripped, which is just want you want in a book nearing 400 pages. I won’t offer up any more about what happens in the story as it’s the intrigue about the family’s secret and the lives of the two sisters that make this book what it is and to tell you anymore I risk spoilers.

I loved the sinister feel this novel had throughout, that unsettling feeling, like something dark is coming. This theme came through much stronger than I thought it would and it was great! Coupled with themes of family ties, secrets and lies, Adams really puts the emphasis on the psychological in this one. There wasn’t a fast-pace to the events unfolding in this one, and that really allowed Adams to focus on the psychological factors in this read. The entire novel moves at the same steady pace with this undercurrent of dark suspense that is pulling you deeper into the plot.

Adams offers you an insight in to the minds of Elle and Irini to justify their actions whilst showing how deeply events from their childhood affected them both in different ways. There were a few times I felt Irini should just walk away (but where is the fun in that), it was almost like she was asking for trouble but Adams did a wonderful job portraying just how strong the pull between the sisters was and this allowed the plot to remain believable. Elle and Irini were both great characters, if a little odd, but they were well developed and as the novel progressed you got to know them really well – even if you couldn’t one hundred percent understand their actions.

There were a few minor twists along the way but the most shocking was definitely the final one, it came straight out of left-field but it made it made so much sense, you’re almost kicking yourself for not seeing it sooner. The ending isn’t all wrapped up neatly in a bow, but you’re given enough to feel, in equal measures, fulfilled and wanting more.

If I was going to zone in on the one thing that shone for me in this book, it would have to be the creepy, sinister atmosphere so if you enjoy books of a dark and unsettling nature, I recommend you give My Sister a read.

Although I read this book to the end, I almost gave up several times. At one point, it seemed like a list of examples of Elle’s madness and the story didn’t really seem to take much shape, apart from reciting occasion after occasion when Elle was bad. Around the halfway point, there was some more plot development and towards the end events became positively gothic. However, I was left unconvinced by much of it.

I couldn’t really identify with Irini, and Elle was so hard to identify with that it was almost as if she were a caricature. There were times when Elle’s relationship with Irini hinted at borderline sexual, which I found a bit unsettling seeing as they were sisters.

When Irini visited the Head Mistress of the local school, I felt there was too much reliance on smoking and drinking whisky as a device to indicate stress or secrets. The old chain-smoking to indicate tension cliché has been done to bits.

Towards the end, when the mysterious burnt out asylum still contained readable and significant medical records, my credulity was tested to the limit.

I found it hard to nail my colours to any of the characters in this book, and I would have liked to have sympathised with at least one of them, but even Irini was irritating.

The title could do with being a bit more original too. I was telling a friend about this book and we talked about “My Sister” for several minutes before realising we were talking about different books. When you search on Amazon there’s no end of similarly titled books.

I think the author has the potential for a good career ahead of her, but this may not be her best work. I feel that is still ahead of her.

A good read. Slowing in places. Poor ending. Ended with possibilities of another one in series which I would definitely read as I did get to like the characters.

Thank you NetGalley and Dashboard for the opportunity to read this fantastic book. I loved this book so much that I read it in one go (staying up most of the night to finish it).
It was evident from the opening line that I was in for a treat.
Ellie and Irini are sisters who have grown up apart, Irini has always wondered why she was given to her unloving aunt to bring up, when her older sister is so much trouble, which is evident from the snippets of back stories from both girls. I did find myself getting angry and frustrated by the things Elli has done and continues to do, she comes across as a very controlling person.
I had to re-read the last few chapters to make sure I had not missed out on what I considered to be vital information, cause without wanting to put a spoiler there was no conclusion to at least two parts of the story, which makes me wonder if there is going to be a part two of this story, although in all honesty I don’t know how there can be.
