This is a great resource for preachers wanting to know how to connect the sermon the mount to the lives of those they are ministering to. The key motif used throughout is the theme of flourishing - the awareness that the sermon offers a shape of living that enables humans to live fully and fruitfully. The book introduces the themes well - with careful attention being given to key terms and disputed areas. A close exposition section follows that allows you to get to grips with each of the sections of the sermon.
I found the book to be rich in insight, helpful to broaden your grasp of the text, and a catalyst to thinking about how to re-present material that is often a well-worn path for many congregations.

Jonathan T. Pennington's theological commentary on Jesus' most famous discourse is an incredible resource, and I will refer back to it for years to come. This work engages critically with a broad range of scholarship on the Sermon on the Mount while offering Pennington's own unique perspective to the overall tone, structure, and goal of Jesus' instruction. Pennington compares the discourse with other ancient literature, challenges a number of established viewpoints on the sermon, and presents a new way of reading and engaging the text. The commentary will prove invaluable for teaching and preaching. I'll reference this work and am glad to have it in my library.
