This is heartbreaking. There. is. no. other. word. for. it. I don't want to spoil anything, so I will not extend myself.
Be prepared to shed a torrent of tears. I repeat: if you have somewhere to go, do not read this before going out. Give yourself time and a packet of kleenex.

An amazing, unique and emotional story of love and friendship. Reads more like fiction than fact. Didn't know until half way through that it was a true story and that added greatly to the credibility and impact the book had on me. Loved it!

This was a difficult novel to read due to the content. I loved the book but would have preferred a warning that it contained difficult to read content. I would recommend it but with a bit of a warning attached. I think some things may have been lost in the translation, becuase the flow of the story seemed a bit off at times. Good, dramatic read if that is what you are looking for.

It took me a lot longer to finish this story than I had anticipated, mainly because the begining felt a little juvenile and a bit ameture. However, I'm glad that I forced myself to keep going and push through to the end. The overall story is definitely 5 stars and there were times when it was hard to believe that it actually happened, but I think that's why despite some of the weak writing, the book was a page turner.

Now as far as the writing, when I say weak, I'm speaking in regards to the author not being seasoned in her writing. There were a lot of parts where it felt very jumpy from one scene to the next and as a reader I like smoother transitions. Some of the scenes had a lot of telling and not enough showing. As heartbreaking as everything was, I wanted to really feel what was happening, so being told, rather than shown was a bit difficult for me.

As for the pacing, once I got past the begining it started to pick up in speed and kept my interest. The only hangup I had was when the voice would shift from Jessica's 1st person POV, to 3rd person and jump into the heads of different people, for example, the detective. It just didn't feel necessary to jump from POVs and should've stayed in Jessica's POV the entire way since it was her story about Danny and Christina, not anyone else's. Sticking with her POV would have kept the pacing smoother.

Lastly, I think the author was very brave for writing her life experience, especially because it's about a topic so heartbreaking and taboo. I'm a romantic, so I badly wanted a happy ending where Danny was able to remain stable on his medicine and live happily with Jessica and their adopted children... but that would be a fictional ending and this wasn't fiction. It was a true story about a love so raw and pure that it reached beyond what its limitations were by pushing its boundaries on what connecting with a person really means.

I'm hoping this can become a movie one day and then I can force my bestie to watch it with me since I know it will turn her into a blubbering mess... because I'm cruel in that way :)

This book is endearing, heartbreaking and wonderful. I cried through most of it but couldn’t put it down. The author does a great job the story just flows and before you know it the book is done. I was given an ARC by Netgalley for an honest review

I understand this is (at least mostly) a true story. Sadly, I didn't like much of it. The ending was awful, and seemed contrived (really after ALL that to get his friend off of drugs he just starts shooting heroin?) and it was poorly written, although part of that could be translation issues. I really just didn't care for this story at all.

So Near the Horizon is not an easy read and worth the time you will invest as it is a story that should be told. The subject matter is hard: incest and rape of children, AIDS, and drug abuse but the story enfolding these issues is one of live and of building trust.
I spent so much emotional energy reading the story of Jessica, Danny and Christina that I had to leave the book at times just to recharge. Danny is a broken young man inside who developed a guarded exterior for protection and out of necessity. Jessica is the young girl who falls in love with him and helps him battle his demons. Christina is Danny’s closest friend who battles drug addiction. The future is never bright for them and they battle a fight to try a win a possibly losing battle.

I really loved this book. A very intense, powerful novel based on a true life story. Several dark topics are covered including rape, suicide, drug use, hate, and abuse. Some parts were hard to read but made the book more amazing and so much better because the main characters really experienced these things. It made me cry and laugh and feel so much for all of them. The journey that Danny and Jessica were on together was bittersweet and the way the grew stronger together made me cry. The unfair harsh sadness of reality culminating in the end being so sad beyond belief. I am sure, however, that Jessica's memory of Danny will live on forever. An incredibly beautiful story.

This will be a short review, as its hard to write anything about it without giving away some of the story.

Had I not known that this was a true story going in to it, I would have given it 1 star, Its just so unbelievable it would be hard to make this shit up. But Daniels story is true and it is heart breaking.

Daniel is a boy with huge trauma and Jessica has done a great job writing his character, he is very real and very lovable, generous to default and strong beyond belief. Unfortunately she didn't manage the same with her own character. I don't for a second doubt the love she feel for Daniel back when this played out and how hard it must have been for her (we cant forget she is very young) to have been in this situation.. but she doesn't come across very sympathetically. I felt she took a lot and didn't give much.

I can see why someone would write a book about such a big time in their past, but to write 3 books on someone else's misery, I'm not down with that.

Beautifully written storyline that just captured my attention from the very first page! The characters are so well fleshed out that as I turned each page I was being pulled deeper and deeper in as the story unfolded effortlessly between Jessica and Danny! This is a story that stays with you long after the last page is turned!

I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book.

Ugly crying occurred during the reading of this book. Full blown ugly crying. I can't ever begin to review this book - I would feel like I was criticizing someone's life. I think I would go against everything Danny stood for by knit picking or judging. Suffice it to say...this book broke my heart. It shook me to my core. I'm glad Jessica wrote this. I'm glad I read it - heartbroken, but glad.
