1 star.

No. Nope. I just couldn't. This was just awful. I have nothing good to say about it. It was such a let down! This really could have been something wonderful based on the description but it's a really big no from me. The writing is cringe worthy and it's just painful to get through. I don't recommend it at all.

I received a copy from Netgalley.

I snagged this one when it was a Read it Now title as the concept sounded interesting.

And it was an interesting idea. Small town where everyone knows everyone, woman gives birth and a mysterious doctor shows up last moment to help with a difficult home birth. Then things start happening - when the boy grows up and hits his teens the strange doctor starts appearing again, but no one knows who he is. There's no record of a doctor anywhere by that name. There was a gift given at the time of birth of a special bible, with a creepy message, and something apocalyptic hinted at. The mother asks her local priest to look into this.

Problem was it was just so flat and uninteresting. The characters were all cardboard with no depth whatsoever, and the dialogue was so stilted and unrealistic. All tell and no show and very very boring. Calling it quits and DNFing.

Creative and gorgeous!. I cannot stop to read until the end. The author makes the reader addict to the story. The suspense last until the end.

Decline to review as I hated it. I couldn't get beyond the second chapter.

Brilliant thriller, satanic, family book. Really enjoyed it. Sad for the family and I never guessed the ending, which is not like me.
Read the whole.book on a 13 hour flight from bangkok. Journey was still awful. Hope there will be another book like this again. It was not sick or distasteful.. keep them coming. Thanks.

First off this is the story of Simon. We learn of his birth and the introduction of a Dr Brockman early on. A shadowy character that weaves in and out of Simon's life. When Simon is a teenager, his girlfriend Julia was viciously murdered by a ritualistic knife called an athame and Simon is the prime suspect.

First off let me say I did enjoy this book. I would give it 3.5 stars but good reads doesn't seem to let me give half ratings so I gave it 3 stars. This book does have problems that prevented it from me giving it a higher rating.

After Julia's death her parents become amateur sleuths with the sheriffs help and I disliked their characters. They were played too clueless, bumbling for me and also I'm still not sure how you get a footprint and go to the library with that info, type something into a computer search engine and get the brand of sneaker out of that.

The book moved a bit too quickly for me and some transitions were a bit jarring but in the end I enjoyed it because it did what I think it needed to do.

This book in general is a mystery. A mystery with Satanic overtones but a mystery nonetheless. It set the mood at Simon's birth, then increased the tension with the doctors visit/gift at Simon's 1st birthday. It kept sprinkling ominous scenes throughout the book that made me want to keep reading to find out the conclusion. In the end I wish some characters like the Dr. and Simons Godmother had a bigger role and Characters like Julia's parents a smaller one. I also wish some of the darker story points were more fleshed out.

In general though I did think this was a fun little book and I would recommend it

It had a good premise .Unfortunately the plot was poorly executed. I don't recommend it if you think it's a horror novel.. I'd like to think netgalley and the publisher.
