I liked this book because it was set in the Civil War era
The storyline was a ok but I'm really not a big fan of mail order brides books. So with that said I liked it well enough. Just wasn't my cup of tea. I still recommend this book because there are others who will enjoy it.
My thanks to Netgalley. NO compensations were received and all opinions are my own

Overall, I enjoyed the book, although parts were difficult to read and I skimmed over the more upsetting passages. WARNING: THIS BOOK CONTAINS TRIGGERS FOR SOME READERS! The heroine, Josephine, was a likable young lady who survived a traumatic incident. Her family had been decimated by the Civil War and she felt that she had no options left to her in her home town. She corresponded with Nathaniel, a man with trauma of his own, and they decided to marry. Josephine travels to meet Nathaniel and the story gets more interesting at that point in the book.

Along the way, Josephine makes several TSTL decisions that could have been avoided, if only she would have talked with Nathaniel. For that matter, Nathaniel also needed to unburden himself to Josephine. Some of Josephine's conclusions were based on her extreme fears while Nathaniel's erroneous conclusions were based on his own feelings of inadequacy about his physical appearance. These issues led to so many misunderstandings between the two. Towards the end of the book, Nathaniel's behavior towards his wife was inexcusable while his mother had a definite change of heart towards Josephine. The villain in the book was disgusting and I had hoped that he would have met with a more permanent ending. Another main character was Miss Betty, Nathaniel's cook, housekeeper and dear friend. Her character provided some humor in an otherwise too often dark story.

After many trials, they finally reached their HEA. There were times when I wanted to just shout, "Talk to each other!" There are other books about this family and I definitely plan to read them, as I wanted to know what happened to Josephine's sisters.

This is the second book in the McKinnie Mail Order Brides series. Mail order brides books can really be hit or miss. This is a definite hit. I have read the first in the series and couldn't wait to get my hand on this one. Now I can't wait to read the next one. The series is about sisters who have been suffering in someway as an aftermath of the Civil War. The sisters become mail order brides to escape their current lack of a good living environment. This is Josephine's story. We already met Josephine in the first book and I felt so bad for the trouble she has gone through and how she blames her brother's death on herself. There is a lot of action and even involvement of a scandal in this book. Nathaniel Branson wants to become mayor in town and get the corrupt mayor out but he needs a wife to help him. This is where Josephine comes in. Will sparks fly or is he just looking for a woman for his campaign run. What about the meddling mother-in-law and the injury he received fighting a battle? Can she overlook his scars or is love just skin deep? I look forward to reading about the next sister now in this series.

I really enjoyed this story. This was a first read for me by the author and I will be sure to read her again. I enjoyed the story being set during the Civil War. This book was filled with two people over coming personal struggles and slowly coming to love each other. There was a nice mystery involved that kept me intrigued until the end. I can't wait to read more from this new to me author.

A very short and sweet love story. Two scarred souls help in healing each other. There is drama, romance, suspense and a whole lot of feel-good emo in this book. A quick and enjoyable read.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It was full of romance, mystery, intrigue and lots of drama. It is set in the Civil War time period. It gives us a glance into the history as well as the sacrifices people back in those times had to make to survive. I loved reading about Josephine and Nathaniel's story. I can't wait to read more of the Mail Order Brides series.

Josephine has to leave Georgia behind with all of the bad memories of the destruction and personal hurt from the war. She answers an ad for a mail-order bride and after several exchanges of letters she leaves her sisters behind to go find her new life in Colorado. Nathaniel is needing a wife to run for mayor. The current mayor is corrupt as well as the sheriff. They each have their secrets they are afraid the other will not be able to handle. This is a story of learning to trust each other and to find love.

Typical romance. PG rated content. Predictable happy ending. Okay overall.

"Received an Advance Reader Copy in exchange for a fair review"
I liked this story set in Colorado in the aftermath of the Civil War. The main characters are sweet and have a healing effect in each other, both having experienced physical or psychological trauma.
There’s some drama within the couple and the town, but everything is neatly solved.

This is a sweet western romance for it's got the drama, emotional baggage, a few bad guys and the hope for a happy ever after. I received a copy of this book from Netgalley in exchange for a review and it was great reading about Nathaniel and Josephine's love story.

Quite sweet, tastefully written even though the characters have had some traumatic experiences.
