If you're interested in the subject of toxins in your home environment and want something to get your teeth into (scientific) then you'll enjoy this book. I am this person so I liked the depth of explanation and learnt a lot. Thank you to NetvGalley and publisher for the opportunity to read this in exchange for an honest review.

I requested this book as I am a advocate for clean living and keep a chemical free home. I was pleased to see that this book is written by a Doctor who is an expert in the field of toxicity. Our lives are overwhelmed with toxicity in every aspect and its a subject I am very interested in. Therefore I agreed to review honestly. this fascinating book.
I began a toxic free home about 15 years ago. it was a gradual process and partly because i had a elderly cat and wished to keep our environment toxin free for her . As I progressed I found many alternative natural means of detoxifying my home and maintain a toxin free home today. As a vegan it is important all my products be cruelty free and made without chemicals. That being said this doctor has opened my eyes to new ways to detoxify my home and environment. his information goes beyond clean homemade cleaning solutions and delves into every possible aspect of cleansing our lives of toxic substances, electronics and chemicals. This book is a wealth of information for anyone seeking information on a chemical free, toxin free life. I was very pleased to read about the various way I can improve upon my non toxic home.
The most common sources of contaminants (from air, water, food, etc.), but also less obvious ones, such as electrical appliances and technological devices. This I had not considered and was shocked to read how toxic they are to our homes.
His coverage of solutions ranges from simple, inexpensive remedies to health-promoting lifestyle improvements like meditation, yoga and tai chi to cleanse your soul and enhance your life. Overall this is a must read and a most important guide to improving one's health and home environment.
This is a excellent reference book and one I will be purchasing in hard cover to keep for regular reference. Well Done to the author. Thank you for the ARC which does not influence my review.

When I saw that Toxic Home / Conscious Home was written by a medical doctor, I was looking forward to finding a lot of science backed information to make my home a healthier place to live in. Rob Brown indeed manages to cover a wide range of practical ideas to detoxify our homes and I found helpful information that I have not been aware of before. For example, there are a lot of things that I can do in my home without spending a lot of money to cut down on indoor air pollution. However, I was surprised that within the useful information to protect us from environmental hazards, Rob Brown unnecessarily throws in pseudoscientific tips that should be carefully fact-checked. In his chapter about water he writes about Masaru Emoto's claim that our negative thoughts influence the "energy flow" within it. We should therefore bless the water to "impart harmonious frequencies" into the water, which in return make us, our pets, and our plants healthier. This is just one example. In summary, if you read this book with a critical mind, you will find a lot of useful tips. But please check the facts, especially when it comes to some of the more exotic claims before you invest your health and money in them.

A good book with a ton of information on how to "clean up" your everyday life presented in a way that is very readable. I can see a lot of way to reduce the toxic elements in my environment.

The author, Dr. Rob Brown, a radiologist by trade has written a concise, easy-to-read science-based guide on how to achieve wellness in an age where we are all bombarded by toxins in our furniture, chemicals in our food and electromagnetic frequencies in the environment.

In a very accessible way, he educates you on what to look out for and then tells you the best ways to mitigate the exposure. Whether it's buying plants to filter out the toxins in your home, avoiding toxic candles or filtering your water.

He goes one step further than most authors on the subject and explains how the energy around us effects us, and how yoga, meditation and the like can help balance out that type of negative exposure as well.

This book includes all of the subjects I care about the most, and I appreciate the plain way in which the author writes because sometimes the topics can be difficult to understand. Everything is pretty much bad for us today - it's depressing sometimes but that doesn't mean we can't do our best to live the cleanest life possible. This book provides the information you need to do that.

For me personally, I don't think there's anything in this book that I didn't already know. For example, I have specific plants in my home to clean the air, I have salt crystals in every room for ionization. We only drink filtered or spring water. We only eat organic (when possible or necessary). We only use all natural beauty and household products, etc... I don't know that the average person cares about these issues as much as I do, or makes a point to educate him or herself on these types of topics exhaustively as I do. But my friends and family, who may understand generally that buying organic food is better, or that fluoride is not that great need to read this book. And this is the book that I would purchase for them to read for the simple reason that it says literally everything that I want them to know.

So I will be purchasing this book as a gift and giving it to the people I care about the most.

Even if you're not that person who refuses to use fluoride in your toothpaste or eat organic or meditate to balance your chakras lol you can still find useful science-based information in this book that will open up your eyes to ways you can easily modify some aspects of your life to live a cleaner life. And even if you don't care about this stuff for your family, care about it for your children (if you have them) whose immune system is not as strong as an adult. Sometimes, children with allergies or learning disabilities or behavior issues can be positively impacted by the types of changes this book reccomends.

That is how and why I began this road to wellness. Having a child with allergies and suddenly becoming aware that it was my responsibility to remove whatever I could in his (our environment) that could impact him. And it's working. He was born allergic to EVERYTHING. Now, it's just dairy.

But once you start reading about what is toxic and what is not - once your eyes are open... it's hard to unsee. And you want to fix things, you want to correct what you can. This book will help you do that.

This book is based on scientific research. At the same time, it is full of useful information on how to ameliorate the effects of toxins and pollutants in our homes. I sometimes found the science a little difficult (I'm not very oriented that way) but I REALLY appreciate how this book goes beyond "new agey" beliefs to outline hard data. Not that I have anything against "new-agey" beliefs but I'm pretty lazy so I feel a lot more motivated to make changes when they are justified by hard research. Dr Brown's remedies are clearly outlined and seem fairly easy to do. I will definitely use this book to make for a less toxic life. Highly recommended!

Although I have read many books about nutrition, health, safe cleaning, and toxins, this book taught me things that I have not read elsewhere. Even for things that I knew about, this book contained more in-depth knowledge about why certain things are bad for us, better strategies for avoiding them, and ways to live a healthier, happier life! I highly recommend this book!

An all in one go to book to have on hand. Fantastic informational resource for one to go to when you need to know about anything from food toxins to feng shui. Even though I knew a lot of the information, I still walked away learning so much more than I thought I would. I really liked how the information was organized in an easy to understand format that made it accessible. Great beginning resource for this getting into toxin elimination and also for those who already know a few things.

This is a really interesting book on how to lead a cleaner life -- however, it was a bit easy for me to feel overwhelmed with the content and how scientific it could get. This seems more of a resource for professional folks, but it there were quite a few tidbits that have made me more aware of what happens in my home (burning of combustible materials, type of houseplants that help with air quality, etc.).

This book really breaks down the details on why Americans get so sick. It goes into great details about chemistry and the different reactions. Explain what causes this to happen or what causes that to happen. It was a very informative book. I recommend reading if you are interested in chemistry, health, and the environment.

I learned a lot from book and if you want to start making your own laundry detergent, fruit/veggie wash, countertop spray, dish soap, etc. then this is the perfect book for you.

Some of the chapters (Water, Air, Sound) were a little too longwinded for me and at times very boring. My favorite chapter by far was Whole Food. The author went into great detail about the food industry, food dyes, purchasing produce and a list of the Dirty Dozen which have pesticides in the highest concentration. I also learned to only buy organic kale, lettuce and other greens as they are frequently found to be contaminated with insecticides toxic to the human nervous system.

I also learned a lot from the Home Cleaning and Personal Care Products chapters, especially in regards to VOCs and ingredients to avoid when purchasing beauty products, some of which I was already aware of but also many new ones. If you are looking for a book to get you started on the path towards a clean home, this is perfect!

I love to read books like this that are so informative about all the ways live a less toxic lifestyle in and around your home, a place where you can control most of the environmental surroundings. I learned so many things that I never knew were so toxic and the ways to make the changes to a better way of living in the home. Excellent book.
