This is a cute book all about accepting yourself as you are, no matter what you look like. The images in the book are lovely and it is an important story they are getting across in the book - 3 stars

Charlie the Caterpillar by Andy Gutman is a charming story of Charlie, a young caterpillar trying to find himself. He doesn't think he's good enough, though his friends try to convince him otherwise. He hopes his change to a butterfly will make him feel complete. In the end, though, he must do as we all must, and find his own acceptance from within.

This story is full of bright colourful artwork, and simple rhymes sure to catch the imagination of young readers. While great for young children, it may be too simple for those over the age of four or five. Still, great addition to a child's book collection, or as a classroom teaching tool.

***Many thanks to Netgalley and Dog Ear Publishing for providing an egalley in exchange for a fair and honest review.

NetGalley was kind enough to gift my daughter and I with a copy of this book. I read this with my 7 year old daughter and after finishing, it was agreed that we were probably not the targeted demographic. There are important messages like loving who you are on the inside rather than getting hung up on the outside stuff and the friendships were meaningful and sweet. BUT the rhyme had no rhythm which came off as clunky and distracting. If there was some grammatical and tempo minded tinkering, coupled with the large pictures and cutesy message, this could be a very poignant and cherished preschool gem.

Unfortunately, I didn’t finish Charlie the Caterpillar. It had a good message, but the lack of attention to grammar was distracting. Perhaps it was just the advance copy that I was reading?

Charlie The Caterpillar is such a cute story for young kids. Not only it has cute illustrations, also the story is full of lessons and messages hidden.
Charlie is a caterpillar that looks himself in the mirror and doesn't like what he sees, he wants to be someone else. It sounds very familiar with all the young people out there. He's continuously encourages by his friends that he's loved as himself, he's unique. One day he has to go in a cocoon. That's when he comes out as a butterfly, and he likes what he's become.
There's a kid-friendly, simple message around self confidence and appreciating yourself for who you are. All kids need these messages at all ages I think. That's why I appreciate the book a lot, and also the drawings are really so cute.
I would definitely recommend it.

I'm afraid there was really nothing I liked about this book. I'm not very fond of the style of illustration. I know there's an art to computer drawing, but I've just never appreicated it. I found the rhymes were inconsistent and sometimes it was hard to figure out the meter. And I didn't get the story. It just seemed to be about a cranky caterpillar who turned into a beautiful butterfly but was still unhappy. But I couldn't figure out why he was cranky and the story didn't seem to have an ending. He was told to accept himself for who he was, but he had been told that before he became a butterfly as well. He started out cranky, he ended cranky and nothing really seemed to happen in between or afterward. He just flies off cranky.

The bright, colorful pictures are very appealing. Kids will gravitate towards this book for the beautiful pictures. I recommend this book for kids ages 2-5. The simple message about loving yourself for who you are is a great message. The story is probably too cutesy for older kids, but younger kids will love it.

The pictures are nice and colorful and goes well with the story. The story was great in certain pages but felt dry and boring in other pages. It's a read once and forget about it book.

I really liked the message in this book. It is important that children realize that no matter what you look like, it is who you are inside that matters. Unfortunately, the text was clunky. There was some rhyming, then not. It did not flow well at all. Perhaps if tweaked a bit, it might be better. The illustrations were large and colourful, but a bit amateurish. I am sorry, but I can not recommend this book.

I really wanted to like this book. I love the message. It doesn’t matter what you wear, but what you are inside. It feels like half the time the author is trying to rhyme and half the time they could care less. It has no rhythm or flow. Plus, the way this digital galley is put out, you do not get a real fell for how the print version of the book will look. Yes you get the illustrations, but the words are on the next page and in colorful text boxes. Maybe i would give a print version a better review, but not much of one.

I thought this was a super cute kids book, especially for younger children. it all about accepting yourself as you are, no matter what you look like. The illustrations are beautiful, I loved the colors. I think it'd be really good for 2-4 year olds. It's a little too cutesy for older than that I'd think.
