There’s something about boarding schools that lend themselves to a good psychological thriller. I enjoyed this book. The second half was much better than the first. I had some trouble buying into some of the plot, but when the drama picked up about half way through I couldn’t put it down. A fun easy read!

She was the Quiet One is about twin orphans going to live with their grandmother. Their grandmother has money and sends them away to a bording school. There they meet Mr and Mrs Donovan. What happens in this small rich school will shock you. An amazing suspense story.

Dark and twisted tale of twin sisters in a boarding school where nothing is as it really seems. Secrets, lies and ultimately death in this extremely compelling novel.

This is about twins Rose and Belle at boarding school. They fall out as Belle gets friendly with the popular girls. Events snowball until one of the twins is dead and the other one is accused of murdering her. Overall it is a good story with a good plot.

I'd give this a solid 3 stars, maybe 3.5. Two sisters off at a posh boarding school where a student winds up dead. Fairly predictable good girl/bad girl story but still a fun read. Good for mindless beach reading. Not a lot of surprises in the book and some of the character's are frustratingly naive. You'll likely figure out the ending within the first few chapters but watching the story unfold is enjoyable.

OOOO my head is still spinning from this book! I could not put it down. I think one thing that drew me in so much was that this reads like a YA. From page one I was hooked! This book did not let me down. This was an intense, high drama novel!

The writing in this book is flawlessly done and has helped me find a new favorite author. I was drawn in by such diverse character that grow throughout the novel. The book starts at a steady pace and quickly picks up the further along you get.

Overall a 5 star read from me! I can't wait to read more by this author.

A gripping story of two sisters in a glamorous boarding school....a murder and a who done in it....told in a similar way to big little lies and as readable and good! Although less complex! A great read thanks

Thank you Netgalley and St. Martin Press for the ARC.

This is my first Michele Campbell book and I thought it was a decent read. However, it felt a little to juvenile. I understand this is a book about teenagers but I had to double check to see if it was a YA Mystery. It's not. I continued on with the story because the plot still piqued my interest. In the end, it was an ok mystery but a little too young and predictable for me.

I can't resist twins! This book was written at sort of a lower level for an adult book (more YA or Children's in my opinion) but the story was interesting enough I didn't mind. Do I think it is a new classic? No. Was it an enjoyable way to spend an afternoon? Yes. Lots of dramatic plot and a brisk pace.

This book was just ok for me. It seemed more like a young adult book geared towards people much younger than me! I didn’t hate it, and was able to finish it., but I didn’t love it either. I think it just wasn’t for me.

This is the kind of book that draws you in from the beginning and you find yourself not being able to put it down. Orphaned sisters Bel and Rose couldn’t be any more different. Their relationship becomes very strained shortly after they arrive at their new boarding school. While the plot was somewhat predictable at times, the story was still engaging and enough to keep me interested.

This book was a pleasant surprise. I got a little frustrated and annoyed at some of the characters and their decisions but I still really enjoyed it. I also had to remind myself that they’re 15/16 year old girls and then I felt like their behavior was understandable. I felt like the villain was also well done and not too over the top. Overall I really liked this and would recommend this.

This story captured my attention and didn't let go until the epilogue which stunned. What a twist! I didn't think she would just go away quietly.

I enjoyed this book so much. It kept me enthralled from start to finish. I just couldn't decide who was the culprit. I also had a ton of issues with Heath (Blue Eyes) Donovan. I couldn't help but like him at the same time., I wanted to strangle him, Its weird. I had a love/hate thing going on with the loser. His wife also got on my nerves. Like lady all the writings are on the wall what do you need,? You have photographic evidence and even that you deny. There's just no hope for you. This was a great read.

Many thanks to Netgalley and St. Martin’s Press for an ARC of this book in exchange from an honest review.

A psychological thriller based at a prestigious boarding school where twin sisters, good twin - bad twin vie for popularity and struggle to fit in. Both sisters have very different ideas on how to go about being “accepted” in their new environment.

The author kept the suspense going right to the end. At the beginning we know one of the twins is murdered, but we don’t find out which one till very close to the end.

The setting was authentic. I am from NH and worked at Phillips Academy in Exeter and can tell you first hand that the way the school is portrayed IS exactly the way those old academies are. I felt transported to a previous time in my life reading about the Quad, the Dorms, Teacher Residences, the snow, the laundry room, woods etc. excellent job done here by the author.

Although I can’t say I particularly liked any of the characters with the exception of Rose, I at least felt I knew them. The were developed enough to make a decent character judgement.

The story was drug out a little too long in my opinion. Mrs. Donovan was particularly nerve wracking. So many times she could have done the right thing and was too weak and selfish to step up.

An enjoyable read and would have earned another star if it had been 50 pages shorter.

A perfect couple. At least to observers.
Orphaned twins.
A boarding school steeped in tradition.
And a murder.

Rose follows rules, gets good grades and judges Bel, her rebellious twin. On the first day of sophomore year senior troublemakers befriend Bel. The girls hold a contest to see which can sleep with Heath Donovan, their dorm parent. Rose finds a friend in Mrs Donovan, hoping the rumors aren’t true. When one twin is stabbed seventeen times, the other is a suspect, but many people had reason to want one twin or the other dead.

Give me a boarding school book and I’m almost guaranteed to like it. Add feuding twins and I’m hooked. Michele Campbell’s sophomore mystery/thriller had me choosing sides between the twins from page one. I knew which twin I wanted to survive and hoped she wasn’t guilty.

The Donovans were a hot mess. Creepy, manipulative Heath may not have been a murder suspect, but I found him guilty of being a terrible husband. Sarah Donovan was either naive or dumb, ignoring her instincts, believing Heath’s lies about Bel despite much evidence to the contrary. Such a helpful mentor to Rose, could she have snapped and murdered?

Other suspects included a boy who stalked one twin and with whom the other twin fell in love. The girls blamed both twins for their expulsion were on my list as was the boy who bullied Rose.

SHE WAS THE QUIET ONE started slowly, building in pace and intensity until my heart was pounding, unsure if the murderer would talk another victim. The epilogue left me breathless.

If you like mysteries, thrillers, women’s fiction, boarding school, twins or young adult, SHE WAS THE QUIET ONE is a must read.

I became a huge fan of Michele Campbell after "It's always the husband" so I was eager to read this follow up with this latest novel of her. And I am thrilled to say it did not disappoint! This was THE page-turner that kept me up at night as I was torn between needing to get to sleep but needing to know what on earth was going to happen. I am a fan of thrillers but do not enjoy horror so this was a perfect balance for me. I was pretty sure I knew where this story was going...and just when I thought the ending was wrapping up and I knew it all- BAM- the other shoe drops. Such a phenomenal read. Strong characters, tight writing, face-paced plot. This book has it all! I highly recommend this - the perfect summertime (and any time!) read. I see this one on the NY Times bestseller list for sure!

It’s not very often that I meet a boarding school book that I don’t like. Unfortunately, this was one. At the outset, you know that one twin is accuser of killing the other and the first part of the book is a slow rewind to get to the beginning and learn which twin dies. The second part solves the mystery, which you can see coming a mile away. Too many tropes in this one for me.

As a psychological thriller the story was lukewarm at best, however as a character study on relationships and how well do we know those we are closest with, it was interesting.

Twin sisters who have lost their parents were sent away to a boarding school by their rich grandmother who did so presumably as a rite of family legacy. Once there they fall into completely different groups of friends and virtually become pitted against one another. In the end, one of them is dead and all concerned get to learn more about those they’ve loved and trusted.

This was an interesting commentary on how far we’ll go to get what we think we want and what we lose along the way.
