This was a fascinating book, but it is definitely not for everyone. It offers academic insight into the discrepancies between national and foreign policy in the United States during the turbulent decade of racial upheaval that was the 1960s. While this is not a book I got lost in and read in one sitting, it was a fascinating one and I am glad I took the time to savor it.

Even if you are familiar with historic facts on the US administrations' efforts to fight against the Soviet discrimination of its Jews (Refusniks) and the persecution of the dissent you will still find "From Selma to Moscow" extremely interesting, informative and encouraging. Ms Snyder documentary essay is based on thorough research of the private archives and other available documents. This is historic essay but it reads like a novel. 'From Selma to Moscow' asks questions about, as the author puts, "the inconsistency" of some aspects of the US foreign policy. Was it possible for the American administration to achieve more in the area of human rights during the Cold War? Was the narrow focus of the US policies on human rights deliberate?
This is a fascinating read not only for the human rights activists. But especially they should consider to place this title on the top of their reading lists in the beginning of 2019.
