Wonderful Gardening Book!
This book certainly has it all! I have been a Master Gardener for the past 30 years and an avid gardener since I was a child. There are several things that I want in a gardening book and this has it all! First off, I want great photos that I can dream about in the cold dark winter and this book is full of prettiness. It begins with planning your gardens for what you have considering shade and sun, amount of rain, uses of the site and soil quality. Then it describes the planning and 'how-to' of the hardscape and features such as sidewalks, drives, existing plantings, the neighbor's plantings, sidewalks, and drives. It allows for and discusses play areas, gazebos, arbors, vegetable gardens, pools, and fountains. It has sections on raised beds and no-dig plantings. It also has a nice section of plants to consider using. They use a very nice scale to show the time between sowing and harvesting your veggies as well as what they generally need. There is also an excellent section about pests and how to deal with them and a troubleshooting section. This is a nice reference book and something I will read again next winter! I received this ARC book for free from Net Galley and this is my honest review.

My garden understanding has been an area I’ve been developing since moving to Hilton and being in such a stunning one. Mum and I have chosen sections to overhaul, and, now looking to complement the plants we have with others, this book seemed the ideal one to guide us on the journey. However, it is more of an overview than I anticipated. I was particularly looking for the combinations of plants and whilst this book covers it lightly, it doesn’t share a huge range of plants or any unusual pairings.

It does work through the basics of gardening, layout and care with lots of photos and illustrations, hints and tips and step-by-step explanations. A bit of a mismatch for my objective but an interesting read and if you are just setting out, a goodie! It’s a four out of five on the en-JOY-ment scale for me!

A comprehensive book on gardening, with a focus on design. It's very lavishly illustrated with excellent diagrams, though the photos of plants are just average. Just about every aspect of gardening is covered, including construction and troubleshooting. Designs are shared for different types of gardens such as a cottage garden, a water garden, borders, or herb gardens. I'd say it would be a good general resource for the beginning gardener. Experienced gardeners, unless looking for help with a specific type of design, will find this book a bit too general. The sample plants chosen for each design seem a bit too general and mundane.

But, I think the title is a bit misleading. From title alone, I was thinking this would focus on what plants to put together (which it does somewhat in the garden design sections) and focus on the "abundant" part (i.e., things that grow well, spread, and are sustainable over many years). The latter part, in particular, was lacking in this book.

Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review this book.

This gardening book is an excellent reference book for gardeners of all abilities and experience levels.

For the beginning gardener it discusses planning for and starting that first garden. For the experienced gardener, it talks about such useful things as pest control and specific gardens such as water gardens. The book is loaded with helpful photos and diagrams. It covers not only flower gardens but vegetable gardening as well. This would be a book you could consult and refer to over and over again for gardening help.

Spring is the perfect time of year to read this book and do it before you start doing anything to your yard. Great ideas, tips, and design layouts for possible gardens. Even if you want something simple, this book is a good jumping off point. Good knowledge and information that will help you feel more confident when purchasing items or speaking with a landscaper. Will also serve as a reference book for years.

I'm building flower and vegetable gardens from a blank start on a very large property in a new planting zone from where I've lived for 20+ years. This book is perfect for everything I need, from planning and plotting to scheduling the planting of each type of plant. I've built several bedding areas so far, running the gamut from full sun to mostly shade, from red clay to the poorest soil to manure rich beds. I'm adding fruiting vines amongst the tree lines, butterfly bushes next to our favorite sitting areas and well...you name it, we're building it. Now, this book has information and guidance on every step of the building beds to planting the right plants at the right time. EVERY question I have asked, the answer has been in this book. These two gentlemen have written the ultimate gardening book for everyone. I have many gardening books but for right now, this is the only one I need to read.

An excellent source for anyone who is starting out in gardening. It gives a good, overall introduction to many topics. Designing the garden, constructing the garden, deciding what to plant, and how to care for the plants once they are growing, there are sections on all of these. It's beautifully photographed, and easy to read. This book should be helpful to anyone who wants to begin gardening but don't know where/how to start.

We are getting ready to put a garden in- both floral and vegetable- so I thought I would find some helpful ideas in this book.

The layout was great and there was tons of helpful info and such a diverse array of garden ideas. It was really helpful seeing layout ideas and reading up on them. My one caveat is that the pictures are so small in the ebook I can't even see them and it really takes away from seeing what I would like to do. The info is solid but you miss a lot with no visible pictures. Hoping this is not an issue everyone is having and a fluke on my end but I can't judge the pictures as they are too tiny to see.

This book is a well laid book on starting a suburban garden. The advise is very practical and the designs are traditionally based, which makes it a very good book for beginners and easy care gardeners. There is instructions on fencing, lawn, beds, decking, verandas, porches and paths design. The section on garden style is good and show how to adapt the original base to various looks such as Japanese, cottage, modern, courtyard and more. I like the section on organic gardening, including set up and information on growing many vegetables. Of course there is lots of information on growing and care of other plants for the garden.
A good book for the practical landscaper

When i do manage to put a book down, i love to spend time in the garden. Last year we decided to re design our garden, experimenting with colour and various other combinations. I was so pleased to have had the opportunity to read this book, as it has given us plenty of new ideas and advice. What i also found useful in this book was a chapter about paths and path constructions. Mine certainly needs attention! There is so much useful information in this book with beautiful colour photographs and plenty of diagrams. I can highly recommend this book to all who enjoy their gardens. One of the best gardening books that i have read for some time.

My thanks to Netgalley and the Publishers for my copy. This is my honest review.

Reading the title of this book, Plant Combinations For An Abundant Garden, I thought that the scope of the book would be more limited, that it would just have some ideas about what plants to combine together in a garden. But, the book covered way more than that. It is a comprehensive gardening guide perfect for a beginning gardener, and also good for someone more knowledgeable.

First it discusses the inspiration for your garden, then how to make a plan of your yard on paper, what tools you need to start the work, the prep work you need to do on site, and the order in which to do this. Then it reviews all the things you might put in your garden besides plants, i.e. walls, fences, hedges, gates, patios, decks, paths, steps, lights, garden buildings and more!

My favourite part of the book was the next section, all about different garden designs. Some examples are: a cottage kitchen garden, water garden, Mediterranean garden, formal English garden, secluded city garden, Japanese garden, container garden, wild garden, rock garden, herb garden, et cetera. Included in each section were sample plans for each of these kinds of gardens, and the kinds of plants that would go well in each one.

Then, there was growing information for many kinds of plants – annuals, biennials, perennials, fruits and vegetables.

If your yard is a blank slate right now and you want to transform it into something more, this book is perfect for you. It has everything you need.

Note: I received an advance copy of this book through NetGalley.

This book is easy to read and easy to use. It gives step by step instructions on how to properly build the best place for growing and protect the garden you plant. My grandmother was an avid gardener and taught me most of what I know about gardening today. She grew mainly flowers so this book was great at opening my eyes to how to better grow fruits, veggies, and herbs. I can not wait for summer to get more plants growing and utilize this book even more.
