Alongside a conventional "boy meets girl but they cant be together" love story, this is a story of love, loss, courage, hope, yet with an underlying darkness as it touches on domestic violence, abuse, bullying and religious bigotry.

Hannah & her sister Judith live with their mother & their abusive but religiously obsessed father in Liverpool. The family business is failing and the future looks bleak for Hannah
Will is a sailor, escaping bad memories & a difficult family in Australia.
When Hannah & Will meet, both their lives are turned upside down - family secrets are exposed, and love is tested.

The book concludes as war breaks out in 1939 & leaves so many unanswered questions! There is definitely another story waiting to be told, the wartime story of Hannah & Will and of course Judith.

Disclosure: I received this book free from NetGalley for review, but all opinions are my own.

Took a little while to get going and to get into this book but once I had I was hooked. A really gripping and moving pre WWII story.
