I think this was the best title so far to come out of DC Zoom. I really enjoyed the story and how they explained the history of the Green Lanterns. They introduced key characters in the Green Lantern universe, such as John Stewart and Sinestro. If you didn't know anything about the Green Lanterns going into this, you'll still be ok. On the other hand, if you do know all the Green Lantern lore, this is still a fun and entertaining addition to the collective story overall. Tai and all the other characters are nicely written and feel like fully fledged characters. I really enjoyed this and I hope the next DC Zoom title is just as good!

Love this iteration of the Green Lantern. Something incredibly hopeful about this story. The art jumps off the page and the colors kept me captivated <3

Thank you DC and NetGalley for sharing this awesome comic with me in exchange for an honest review! I devoured this in one sitting. The story of Green Lantern, the illustrations, the characters, were all really well done. I can’t wait to read more.

This is a great introduction for those unfamiliar with the world and purpose of the Green Lantern Corps. This title focuses on teen hero Tai, who lives with his Vietnamese family. Tai and his friends are close and their interactions are funny and relatable. The sense of community and family envelop the more serious moments of bullies, fear, and prejudice. The expressive illustrations are dominated by bright colors which are pleasing to the eye and imagination.

In this graphic novel, Green Lantern is reimagined as a thirteen years old Vietnamese boy named Tai Pham who wakes from a dream to see his Bà Nội's, (grandmother’s) jade ring by his side. Though he tries to return the ring, it reappears at his side. Confused, Tai learns from Bà Nội that the ring has chosen him and then the next day she’s passed. Suddenly, Tai unbeknownst to him has been a superhero overnight and is introduced to the existence of the Green Lantern Corps, an “intergalactic peacekeeping force.”

I have read a few of DC imprints for middle school and YA audiences and for the most part they are a mixed bag. Green Lantern: Legacy is a solid graphic novel that blends old and new traditions. All of the superhero journey: origin story, training montage, introduction of the villain, etc. are nicely done and well paced. I liked the nods to the familiar faces and references to the Green Lantern universe but it's not necessary to know them in order to enjoy this installment. What I loved most about this graphic novel is its infusion of Vietnamese culture, diverse cast, and the emphasis on community and compassion. The superhero, though very present in the story, does take a back seat to activism. Tong’s energetic panels, dominated by greens, oranges, steel blues, and purples, keep the visuals dynamic, and cultural details are a delight. Overall, a solid graphic novel and a great pick for younger readers who are anxiously awaiting to see the next superhero movie or tv show.

Green Lantern is one of the few “main” superheroes I don’t know much about so Green Lantern Legacy was such a treat! Though I am not as familiar, I do have some sense of the Lantern universe. I appreciate how close this story stayed to the original universe. This might be my fav of the middle grade novels!

Lanterns aren’t born but chosen, so imagine Tai’s surprise when the ring chooses him. I love that Minh chose for Tai to inherit the ring from his grandmother, honoring the family legacy. It’s easy to read the cultural subtext here.

This book is full of complex characters and stories, from the larger universe (Sinestro and John Stewart) to the local story (ending vandalism). I highly recommend it for the everyone but especially for reluctant readers. With its bright art and charming characters, it’s sure to be a hit with the middle grade age group.

Love this take on the Green Lantern story. And knowing Minh Lê's grandmother is the inspiration makes it all the more special. A fun comic my graphic novel loving students will be excited to read.

DC Comics is doing some great things these days in the realm of superhero comics for kids. Green Lantern Legacy both acknowledges the vast history of the Green Lantern and allows for a future of all new directions. It carefully balances heroism and kid concerns. Tai has school obligations. He has troubles with friends and the looming potential loss of his family's business. At the same time he's learning how to be a hero and faces off against a real villain. Many comics featuring kid heroes look only at friendship or minor villains. This book doesn't hold back on any front, making it reminiscent of various iterations of Spider-man. While it's largely introductory, setting up new readers with the idea of the Green Lantern Corp and threat of Sinestro, the potential is there to take this series to some very cool places.

I am not normally a "DC" fan, or a fan of comic books in general (they are visually hard for me to process, but I love them for others!), but wow! Minh's writing for this book is fantastic! I had to keep reading it! I hope that this is not a stand-alone book, and that there are more to come!

I really liked this version of the Green Lantern. I'm not a super hero or Marvel fan, but I really liked this story. Since I was reading it on my iPad, the artwork was luminous and very vivid. It will be interesting to see how that translates into print. I think my students would like this one a lot.

Green Lantern has been around since the Golden Age of super heroes. I grew up with the Silver Age heroes, and it wasn't until recently that we got any diversity amongst any of these said heroes. Oh, we would sometimes get some people of color, but they were often side kicks.

So it is great to see Tai Pham, who is of Vietnamese decent, become the next Green Lantern of Earth. And, even cooler than that, he inherits this ring from his grandmother, who was a defender in Vietnam, before she escaped to the United States, after the war ended.

Pretty amazing entrey, to have Tai be Vietnamese-American, as well as only 13 years old. Very good way to tell the story, and very enjoyable origin story. I look forward to more stories about Tai.

Thanks to Netgalley for making this book available for an honest review.

I had a wonderful time reading Green Lantern: Legacy. It tells the next chapter in this series, one that brings a new member into its ranks. Although no one saw it coming, they might be the person needed to help stop a dangerous threat. As they try to get the hang of these powers, they discover someone they thought they could trust ends up being more than they seem. If you are a fan of the Green Lantern then this is a graphic novel you will want to read.

I enjoyed this takeoff of Green Lantern. I'm not very familiar with the original story, only saw the terrible Ryan Reynolds movie, but I liked what Minh Lê did with it. I liked the family aspect of it. I also liked the illustrations. It was a good comic.

I absolutely love this book. Glad that DC is bringing the kids into these stories, adding to the magic and fun of Green Lantern, and giving more reasons why kids should buy the book. The doses of charm, innocence and humor abound in this story that will be enjoyed by younger and older audiences for many years to come. Highly recommended.

Tai is a Vietnamese-American living in Coast City with his multigenerational family. He inherits a Green Lantern ring and all that entails. The art is vivid and bright and full of that signature green. Tai, his friends, and his Grandmother are all well-rounded, fully developed characters.

This is the best title from DC Zoom yet. What I really liked about it is that it embraced the Green Lantern history. If this is my introduction to DC comics, I can go and buy some other Green Lantern comics without getting confused. Both John Stewart and Sinestro are introduced in the book. DC's mythology hasn't been changed or ignored unlike other DC Zoom and Ink books. This is about a new Green Lantern in the larger DC universe and that's how these comics should be. They should be written for middle schoolers but still be part of the larger DC universe, acting as a gateway to DC as a whole.

Fans of the DC Universe were introduced to two new Green Lanterns of Earth over the last 8 years, both being people of color, Simon Baz and Jessica Cruz. This time, “Green Lantern: Legacy” presents two new Lanterns of Vietnamese descent - Tai Pham and his grandmother Chi Dao. Reading this book for the first time, I felt an instant connection to seeing a character who grew up with circumstances similar to my own - being a child of immigrants who survived the journey from Vietnam to America, the emphasis on hard work and education to succeed, and valuing service to community and family.
Being that “Green Lantern: Legacy” is a graphic novel, it’s worth noting that Andie Tong’s illustration is perfectly complemented by Sarah Stern’s colors. No matter where the setting is - at home, in school, outer space, within the creative mind of Tai as he meditates to train as the newest Green Lantern - the artwork takes us to those places and the tone makes readers feel transported to places familiar and foreign.
Thematically, the story calls into question the balance between pursuing innovation and maintaining communities with legacy, as well as what legacy can mean to a young person with their whole life ahead of them.
This is the type of book I am excited to share with my young nieces and nephews. While I’m sure they will enjoy this riveting superhero of color story, I also want to challenge them to think hard about the feelings they have about this work and frame conversations about the ideas the author introduces.

I was chosen through NetGalley to receive an advanced copy of Green Lantern: Legacy, so that I could share my review!

Tai Pham has been close with this grandmother his whole life, but when her health starts to fail, he learns a secret about her that seems unbelievable. Bà Nôi is a Green Lantern, and her ring has chosen Tai as her successor. Tai is excited by the possibility of having super powers, but the other Green Lanterns are unsure if he is old enough to handle the power at only 13-years-old. When things start to change in his neighborhood, Tai takes it upon himself to investigate. Having new powers may be difficult to navigate, but Tai soon realizes that he is not alone in his fight for justice!

I have been a Green Lantern fan for quite a while, but I could never quite get into the comics. Green Lantern: Legacy completely changed this fact, as I found the story to be heartfelt and the characters relatable. Mihn Lê has revitalized the Green Lantern narrative, bringing the characters into a much more realistic world. Andie Tong’s art is vibrant, communicating how the world looks to Tai and capturing the reader instantly!

You can get your copy of Green Lantern: Legacy on January 21st from DC Boom!

My Recommendation-
Green Lantern: Legacy is the perfect title for readers of all ages who enjoy authentic coming of age stories. Whether or not you have any Green Lantern knowledge, this book is a touching story of family and discovering your inner strength. It speaks perfectly to what superheroes are meant to do at their core: reveal the best of humanity.

I am not familiar with Green Lantern. However, This was a fast read. I found it entertaining even though it was a bit predictable. I love the diverse cast of characters and the inclusion of Vietnamese culture. By the end, I was left wanting more. This is perfect for middle grade superhero fans.
