I really really like this one. It brought me somewhere far away with its poetry then took me back to where I was. It was kind of a poetry book for everyone.

The Rose That Blooms in the Night by Allie Michelle

Rating: ★★★★

Thank you Netgalley and Andrews McMeel Publishing for the free e-ARC in exchange for an honest review!

"You are chasing a life that is not meant for you, my love
That is why you are in so much pain
When you stop running so fast
Your purpose will finally have time to catch up with you"

This is one of the best collections of poetry I have come across in quite some time. I was hooked from the very beginning. I don't usually "highlight" or "bookmark" favorite passages in the books as I read; typically I mentally acknowledge when I've read a particularly great section and move on. This collection, however, had me breaking out the bookmark feature of my e-reader so fast I think my kindle software could hardly keep up with me! There were SO many beautiful passages in this it was hard to keep track. The illustrations scattered throughout were simple yet beautiful and fit so well with the voice of the author. As a woman who has struggled with self image and self love throughout my entire life, this collection reached into my soul and dragged the beautiful parts to the surface and threw them into a mirror, pointed at the mirror, and said "this is you, look how much there is to love." I can't recommend this enough to anyone and everyone! Allie Michelle's writing style is flawless and so so beautiful and hits you like wave when you dive in.

This one will for sure will be added to my physical collection as well. One of my favorite poetry collects I’ve read so far. This poetry book focuses on hope and self love which I can always use a-little more of. The illustrations throughout the book were simple and gorgeous. I highly suggest you pick this up.

A big thank you to NetGalley and the Author for letting me read this book so early in return for an honest and unbiased review.

Okay, so it's been like half a year since I last read a poetry book so I figured I would start with one again I have to say this one quite disappointed me.

When I read about this one it sounded great: "a mirror reflecting the love inside of those who read it."
It all sounded very uplifting and amazing to me.

However it started of being like that. The poetry book started off very nice and airy so to say. Not that much in depth yet, basically giving you a easy walk through when it comes to getting into the book.
Eventually when you get around to the one quarter point you start realizing that every poem seems to be so similar and repetitive that it started to feel dull.
At the middle point I was kind of disappointed that it didn't go further than the author going "This is what love is" etc etc etc. Obviously it wasn't only those five words but the way the author wrote her poems made it feel like that's all she was saying. Every. Single. Time. No offense but Love is not only loving someone or having a significant other that you want to be obsessed with. This is all I was getting from this.
The ending wasn't quite different, only that the feminism card was thrown with the random poem that read along the lines of "Love is respecting women." ..... yeah..... And men should be respected too? Or no? Or what am I supposed to get from this? Like I don't mind a bit of women love but not like that hun.

Moral of the story, this poetry book wasn't really for me. I went into it thinking I was really going to like it, however this was not the case in the end. I do think other people than me would still really enjoy this and give it a lot of appreciation.

Some beautiful poetry in here, I loved the fact so much dealt with self love too, which is the most important love for most people they struggle with. Beautiful illustrations that go with the stunning lyrical prose. An absolutely wonderful collection you can dip into or throw yourself in whole as I did. Stunning

<quote>The fish dove beneath the water
Breathing for the first time
Feeling it was finally home</quote>

The beauty in poems is that they are so personal and vastly different from each other. The poems in 'The Rose That Blooms in the Night' are much longer and use many more words to show what they have to tell than those in many poetry bundles I read. That doesn't make them better, it doesn't make them worse, it makes them what they are.

The beautiful illustrations add to the strength of the poems with their simplicity.

The collection of poems and proses in The Rose That Blooms in the Night were incredibly touching. I enjoyed the themes that revolve around the book - feminism, social media, grief and more. I thought that the author did an incredible job curating the book. What's more, the illustrations complement the beautiful style of writing.
Kudos to the author. This book comes out in a few days on October 15th.
Thank you Andrew McMeel Publishing and Netgalley for the advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.

Thanks to Andrews McMeel Publishing for the ARC!

Nice collection of poems about relationships, self-love, kindness, respect, fears, life challenges, among others. I think the author did a great job, but her style is very similar to other works I've read before.

Nice read, though!

Beautiful! Reminds me a lot of The Sun and Her Flowers or Milk and Honey. I loved the illustrations and how they matched each poem topic!

''Though she had strong thorns
Her heart was always open
For those with an open heart
Can never be broken''
*Excerpt from the poem 'Rose of the Night'

First of all, I love the illustrations! They are so so powerful and add charm to the collection.

This is a collection that fiercely talks about being a woman, women empowerment, loving oneself, lost love, being alone, accepting oneself, how love should be and should be not, grief, the difference of being nice and kind, letting go, digital disconnection, betrayal, social masks and different masks that we wear. I love the first part that's named Dusk.

The second section, that is named Dawn, talks about love and lovers, the contradictions and disconnection, to start again, what we are influencing, giving yourself freedom to fail, death, encouraging oneself, trusting oneself, love being conditional, what to teach your daughter when you have one, honest moments of life, being brave, compromises, social media, art and creativity, what to teach your son when you have one, what matters and what words matter in real, victimization, passion, being a writer, danger of comparisons, courage, inspiration, woman empowerment, self worth, beauty, care.

And there's more!

How can I not possibly love this collection?
It taught me so many things; made me aware of so many emotions; made me think and feel.

She is a genius.

I will be looking forward to read all of her work in the future. I am truly impressed.

Thank you so much #NetGalley for providing me this copy of #TheRoseThatBloomsInTheNight

This is one of my favourite poetry collections I have ever read.
I typically find myself disconnected from poetry, but that did not occur in this one.
The poems were beautifully written, with substance to them that made me feel deeper meaning.
The illustrations sprinkled through were simplistic, but gorgeous and perfectly integrated in.

poetry tends to focus on grief, heartbreak and abuse- which is completely fine, but can seem repetetive.
However this book had themes of self love, hope and beauty which left me with an inspired and content feeling.

"When people ask me where I am from
I always reply, "Earth"
I do not separate myself
Based on invisible lines drawn in dirt
I celebrate diversity
But do not let it divide
We're all students in life's university
And bleed the same color inside"

"Do not fear drowning when there is an entire ocean to explore.
You'll have to brave the dark waters,
but I promise you'll discover a life that is so much more. "

"No one like you has ever existed or will ever exist again"

This was the best pick me up read I've had in a while. I've been in a little bit of a reading slump and this book got me out of it. All the poems by Allie Michelle were very relatable and heartwarming. The poems subjects range from love, loss, & self doubt. I thank my favorite was "The Only Words That Matter." I feel like it is so relatable to anyone that has lost a love one.
Thank you so much to Allie Michelle, Andrews McNeel Publishing, & Netgalley for early access!!! I will definitely be buying a physical copy of this. I highly recommend this poetry book for anyone. It would even make a beautiful gift for a friend!

The Rose that Blooms in the Night by Allie Michelle, 199 pages. POETRY
Andrew McMeel Publishing, 2019. $15.
Language: PG (1 swear, 0 “f”); Mature Content: PG; Violence: PG
BUYING ADVISORY: HS - ADVISABLE
AUDIENCE APPEAL: AVERAGE
Love can be found in many places and can be both devastating and rapturous. While love is most often viewed as what can be found between two people, love is also something that we need to find within ourselves for ourselves. Loving yourself will lead to more fulfilling love with others.
Michelle goes on a journey about love and loss and beauty, and readers are able to feel the truth of her words resonate inside them. I found that I connected with the poems in the first half of the book more than the second half -- I paused more often after poems to understand why the words had pierced my heart -- and Michelle’s writing was such that I had to finish, both satisfied and saddened when the last poem was read.

The Rose that Blooms in the Night is a collection of poems involving love, self love and current states of the world. I was hooked from the very beginning and found my self relating to so many of the prose. I feel like the writer put into words what I couldn't say before. I found myself saying “yes” and agreeing with her constantly. I really wish I had a physical copy so I could have annotated it. I will buy it myself when it comes out!

I was intrigued by the illustrations and could tell they related to what she was discussing about. The illustrations were simple and I think it was a good choice because it didn’t take away the spotlight from the poetry collection.

This book is about 200 pages filled with prose and beautiful illustrations. However, I did find that some of the prose was quite repetitive. I’m not sure if it was meant to be like that to reinforce and finalize a feeling, or something else. Also, some parts felt like I have read them before or were cheesy.

When it comes to the topics, I truly believe they’re important to discuss. Loving yourself first before you love others. Likes and shares from social media won’t matter at the end. There was also some prose that had a feminist approach.

This author really poured herself into this collection and I really appreciate it! My rating is of 4/5.

A big thank-you to NetGalley, the author, and publisher for giving me a copy of this book for an unbiased review.

1.5, rounded up to 2 - It was okay, but I did not enjoy it.

I had two major issues with this book. First, it contributed no ideas that I had not heard before. Second, it read like an extended Tumblr post.

These are two examples of poems that are within the book:

"Let Go
Sometimes you don't realize
What you are holding on to
Until you let it go"

"'Why do relationships fall apart?' he asked.
'Expectations,' she replied. "

I appreciate that the author is pouring her heart out onto these pages, and I do not want to be too critical as a result. But this book simply failed to move me. I wanted something that might rip me out of my reality, flip my world into its head, shred me inside. Instead, I got some feel-good reminders to love myself. I appreciated the illustrations and the message, but I could not connect to the writing.
