Snoopy: First Beagle in Space

It’s a rather nice surprise to discover that Snoopy (and his friends, The Peanuts) are connected to all things sci-fi in a way that most of don’t expect. Charles Schulz was a huge supporter of America’s effort to go explore space, all the way back in the 60s. So much so in fact that Snoopy is the official safety mascot of NASA.

Snoopy: First Beagle in Space is a charming collection of Snoopy comic strips from a classic era of Snoopy and Peanuts fame. It’s full of all the characters you expect to see in a Snoopy comic and has the same level of gentle humour that’s just funny enough to make you smile and is unlikely to offend anyone. It’s aimed squarely at kids and has Snoopy wandering round the woods leading Woodstock and chums on a scouting mission. Because he’s a beagle scout, apparently.
Despite the name, the majority of the content is nothing to do with beagles in space however. Anyone expecting a comic book version of the TV show Snoopy in Space will be sorely disappointed. We get some space related gag strips at the start and the end of the book, mostly related to Snooopy either fantasising about being an astronaut or worried that the moon will fall on his head. We also get some reprints of classic 1950’s era ‘space’ strips; mostly Charlie Brown playing at being an astronaut. The book also has some content about space exploration suitable for kids, but it’s more an after-thought than anything else.

What we do get is Charlie Brown playing baseball, Lucy being a loud-mouthed braggart, Woodstock being cute and so on. There’s a hint of the Red Baron, but mostly these are cute, short gag strips about being a carefree child in a world where the scariest thing is running out of dog food. The artwork is exactly what you’d expect; deceptively simple and incredibly easy on the eye.

Snoopy: First Beagle in Space doesn’t live up to the promise of its title in the slightest, and yet that doesn’t really matter. It’s Peanuts; it’s cute, it’s silly and it is comfort food for the soul. If you’re not familiar with the material by now you’ll most likely be bored to tears by it, but if you’re beagle fan, then prepare to enjoying the warm and fuzzy nostalgia this sort of thing evokes.

If you want space adventures with everyone’s favourite big-nosed dog, check out Boom Studios more modern Snoopy: A Beagle of Mars, which is more modern and actually puts a dog in space. Otherwise, settle in with a mug of hot chocolate and enjoy.

My son and I enjoyed reading these comic strips. Slightly disappointed that there wasn't more of a "moon" based theme. But over all we giggled and laughed and it was an enjoyable read and a great little mom and son bonding time. It's a great way to encourage younger readers to have a love of books and reading.

I love Snoopy, which makes me slightly biased towards this book, BUT IT WAS BRILLIANT. Snoopy goes to space, somewhere ive never seen him go before, and I loved every minute. Perfect illustrations and storyline!

A classic comic strip book full of Snoopy and the Peanut gang. You can't go wrong with classic Snoopy. I remembered some of the strips from reading the comics from the newspaper. I read a lot of it aloud to my son, and we both enjoyed it. The little stories still made me laugh out loud, smile, and have those moments of awe.

At the end, you learn about the 50th anniversary of Apollo 10 and how the astronauts used pictures of Snoopy and Charlie Brown to communicate.

Snoopy: First Beagle in Space brings back the nostalgia of reading the Sunday comics as a kid. For new readers, it is engaging and varied enough that any Peanuts fan would enjoy this ode to space.

This is a great nod to the Apollo mission and it's 50th anniversary, as well as being varied and engaging enough for a reader just looking for some entertainment. Sticking to Schulz's cute and funny comic strips, this graphic novel covers all of the characters in the Peanuts gang with the usual vibrancy and cleverly crafted illustrations.

Recommended to all Peanuts fans looking to dive back into the world of Snoopy.
The publisher generously provided me with a copy of the book upon request on NetGalley. The rating, ideas and opinions shared are my own.

Loved the Snoopy in Space portion, could do without the rest. My kids lost interest in the book after about the 10th page.

I will always have a soft spot in my heart for all things Snoopy + Charles Schulz, as it was and continues to be my mom's favorite! There's nothing unexpected that comes from this book in my mind - it's a Snoopy comic so you know what you're getting yourself into by reading it. However, that doesn't mean it isn't worth the read! Schulz's infamous storytelling capabilities are ever present here and as always, just as enjoyable. This would be an awesome gift for any Snoopy fan out there.

Snoopy: First Beagle in Space by Charles M. Schulz was such an entertaining graphic novel to read! I love Snoopy and The Peanuts gang, and all Peanuts fans will love this book. The comics are varied and you see a majority, if not all, of the characters in Schulz's Peanuts world. The comics also vary in length, some being shorter while others have multiple parts. I love Schulz's illustrations and the colors are nice and vibrant. The title makes it known that there is a focus on space, and at the end of the novel there are some fun facts about the relationship between The Peanuts and NASA. Overall this was a great read with lots of laughs. I highly recommend to anyone looking for some joy in their day.

This is kind of a commemoration of the 50th Anniv of the Apollo 10 Space Mission, & it's a great grouping of a collection of comic strips involving Snoopy & Charlie Brown.....with many of the strips revolving around the subjects of space, rockets, the moon, astronauts, exploration & flight. I chuckled out loud several times while reading this. The end of the book had a few pages of interesting facts about space & told of the Peanuts connection to that particular space mission, & also had a few old strips from 1954 & 1955....it was neat to see those early drawings. The Peanuts strips are for all ages!
In the interest of full disclosure, I received this e-ARC from Andrews McMeel Publishing via NetGalley, in return for reading it & offering my own fair/honest review.

I must say that this is the first time I read a Peanuts comic and I can assure you that it will not be my last.
I really liked reading the adventures of Snoopy and his friends and his efforts to be the first beagle in space.
This is a very good collection of different comic strip with various themes.
I would like it even better if it had more space themed ones, as the title suggests.

It was just a good quick read. My son loved it as well he read it alongside me . He can't wait for it to come out. He wants me to buy a copy of it right now.

A fun collection of Peanuts cartoons, largely themed around space and the moon, this book was great fun to read.

I’ve been a Peanuts fan since I was a child, so any collection of the cartoons is a win for me. I really enjoyed reading this book, the pages are colourful and laid out in a way that is easy to read. The book also has a selection of fun space facts at the back, followed by some older Peanuts cartoons that are related to the topic.

I’d definitely recommend this book to Peanuts fans, and anyone looking for a fun collection of cartoons.

I was given a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for providing this book in exchange for an honest review.
Despite the theme of the title being about space, most of the cartoons aren't about space. But that's okay because who doesn't love Snoopy and his friends?! This book has a lot of funny classic comics.

Who doesn't like Charlie Brown and the characters of Snoopy. Often we find ourselves in the personalities described from one or more of the characters in the story. It might be the overbearing, mean spirited, but not sure why she is so critical Lucy. It could be the over-whelmed, self-conscious, always doubting himself Charlie, or the innovated, who cares what others think, independent (while secretly dependent) Snoopy.

This book is full of some of the best strips of Snoopy and the gang as they explore and understand each other and themselves better. Through Snoopy you learn how to explore, how to imagine things such as going into space. You learn how to treat others nicely.

2019 was the 50th anniversary of Apollo 10 which used Charlie Brown and Snoopy for call signs! So it was fitting to commemorate that with this book!

4,5 Stars

Only the first couple of strips (ok, quite a lot) deal with Snoopys dream of being the first dog on the moon. But since I slightly prefer the ones with Charlie Brown and his friends anyway, that was very ok for me. If several strips tell a continuing story - even better. And a lot of stories fit between 176 pages!

I have always loved Lucy and her witty responses. But in this collection I have to say I also grew very fond of Sally. She is so admirably naive.

At the very end, we also learn about the connection between Snoopy, the Peanuts and the Moon. The command module and the lunar module of Apollo 10 were named Charlie Brown and Snoopy respectively. A fun fact I didn't know before!

Snoopy and the rest of the Peanuts gang have long been favorites of mine. This new collection brings back so many fond memories and lets me explore a little more as Snoopy and Charlie Brown live a little more. This volume in particular seemed right on target with what I remember while still feeling new and exciting. I don't think there will ever be a time when I can't sit down and enjoy Peanuts. It has a way of making me feel young and comforted.
