What an awesome start to a new superhero series! What first grabbed me was simply the colors on the cover. I guess I'm a pushover for rainbows. But I also loved how strong the girl looked and I wasn't disappointed.

Ashley is a 13 year old kid who has had a rough life. Her father is in prison and she has been bounced around from foster home to foster home. She has a bit of an attitude and needs people around her that can keep up with her. Fortunately, a very cool couple takes her in. I love the father, Kitch, who takes all of Ashley's shenanigans and jokes right back with her. He is obviously smart enough to take her on, which is a lot of what she was looking for. Turns out that foster mom Yuka is a scientist working on a project that she is not so sure of. When Ashley accidentally finds her project and thinks it is a birthday present, she gives herself temporary super powers based on the color of the body paints she puts on herself. Of course, someone else wants those paints and it is a question of good vs evil. A great addition to the superhero world leaving one of my daughters clamoring for more.

This is a beautiful and engaging graphic novel. It’s 136 pages, so it’s a quick read and it leaves off on a cliff hanger. Ashley has been from foster family to foster family, and finally she has found a good match. They are kind and supportive. Until Ashley finds warpaints that by being applied to the body give you superpowers. Great concept!

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review this title early! All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Primer follows the story of a girl named Ashley who is in the foster system and is going to live with a new foster family. One day her scientist foster mom comes home with a mysterious briefcase that Ashley is very curious about. What’s in the briefcase? Vials of paints each with a different superpower!! And the adventure starts from there.

As an artsy person, I loved that art was a prime bonding moment for Ashley and her foster dad. The art style of this graphic novel is beautiful and I look forward to reading and seeing more from this author and artist in the future!

I really enjoyed Primer, especially as it features a non-typical protagonist. I particularly liked the way that Ashley's relationship with her foster family is portrayed. While the plot was somewhat predictable, I found Primer to be an overall sweet and uplifting story. The artwork was amazing as well, and I spent quite some time poring over the beautiful illustrations!

An inventive new superhero graphic novel featuring a 12-year-old girl who is in the foster care system. Expressive and colorful art accompany a fast-paced, action-packed story.

This story of a foster girl turned superhero was sweet and is a definite mirror book for my 7th-8th grade students. There is superhero violence and emotional (parental) abuse, so I wouldn't recommend this to students under 6th grade. I received a free copy from Netgalley, but I'll be purchasing a hardcopy to go in my classroom.

This was so fun, from the uniqueness of the story to the colorful artwork. I found myself wishing that the comic was much longer. I would love to get to know the characters more in future installments. Not to mention I always loves a parade heroine, and Primer delivered on that front. If you’re looking for a fun superhero comic with a totally fresh take, check this out!

A brand new superhero! Ashley Rayburn is a 13-year-old with a criminal father in jail. She's bounced from foster home to foster home, but her upbeat spirits have been rewarded when she's placed with Kitch and Yuka Nolan, who provide a warm, kind atmosphere for her to live. Yuka is a little weird, little secretive, but Kitch tells Ashley not to sweat it. Turns out, Yuka works for a lab, and brings home a super-secret experiment: body paints that grant different superpowers. Ashley can't resist the chance to play with some paint - hey, Kitch is an artist and encourages her to use his studio, after all! - and makes some very big discoveries! With her new BFF Luke, Ashley starts dabbling in her newfound paints and powers and takes to the skies as Primer, a new superhero. Unfortunately for Ashley and her new folks, the shadowy government agency that commissioned those body paints want them back at any cost. Primer's going to have to do a lot of color wheel work to keep herself and her new family and friends safe.

Loved this story. It's so upbeat, loaded with laughs and adventure, and has an intriguing subplot involving Ashley's bad guy dad. There are great DC touches throughout the book, so keep an eye on the artwork, which explodes with color and movement. The ending leaves an opening to a possible sequel, and I hope we get one; my library kids are going to devour this one and ask for more. Primer is great summer reading fun.

This is a really cool book. The artwork is wonderfully vibrant and fun, really highlighting Ashley’s personality. Her character design was well done, she looks friendly and average enough to be a classmate but with a cool artistic edge. I loved seeing her in her war paint and different wigs.

The plot is finely executed it sets up her origin story well while maintaining a great pace and sense of fun. I liked all the characters particularly her fast friendship with Luke. I look forward to getting to know more about her family in future books and enjoy their family dynamic. The story fits its middle grade designation well. There are some more mature topics brought up in a way that feels age appropriate and important to the story. Overall it is a fun empowering book.

This was a great story! I loved the gorgeous artwork so much, the colors and design were so detailed and beautiful. Ashley is just a girl trying to find a family while dealing with finding out about super powers. Its a fun read and a sweet ending. I really enjoyed this book!

I loved the concept of the superhero with the paints. Ashley is an infectious character and the adoptive parents are sweet. On the whole it manages to be a fun adventure while giving weight to Ashley’s painful childhood with a father who is now incarcerated. I’d love to see what Primer does next.

This was an easy 5 star read. It had everything I wanted - the artwork, characters, the humor and fun! It was perfect. Primer is about a girl, who is in the foster care system and her father is in jail. She is an artist and eventually finds secret weaponized body paints that give the wearer a superpower. She then has to battle a rogue soldier. Who will she betray and who will win the ultimate battle? I loved the artwork throughout. So bright and detailed and fun! Ashley was a sassy teenager and yet so relatable. Her relationships with the other characters were perfect. I love her superhero theme and idea. I hope there is sequel!!

A wonderful new superhero story for a YA audience. Ashley is a relatable and interesting protagonist, a bright personality that hides some serious trauma. Her transition from goofy teenager to a hero rising to the task of saving her city and her adoptive parents is a heartwarming coming of age tale that will appeal to a teen audience as well as adults.

The art is absolutely beautiful, especially when Ashley starts exploring her new powers. Speaking of, the way the powers work is creative and super fun.

Definitely a must read for any graphic novel loving teenagers (and adults who want a fun coming of age tale)

What an awesome, new superhero! As this left on a cliffhanger, I am looking forward to learning more about Ashley and the world she lives in. The illustrations are AMAZING and are so colorful and eye catching!

Thank you NetGalley and DC Comics for an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.

So much fun! The illustration, the humor and the dialogue would be very appealing to tweens and teens. Primer is a new type of hero but has the sames issues and tribulations that face most superheroes.

Primer is both a new superhero making her debut and a really fun book. Like other reviewers, I wished for more world building and background on what superheroes were in Primer's world (like, are superheroes a thing? Is she the only one around?). Still, Ashley is a lot of fun and it's a great start to a new tween series. The use of color as such as one of the main points of the story is so vivid. The cliffhanger will certainly have readers wanting more.
