This is a cute comic about a cat and its owner. A young woman gets a mysterious package and is stuck with a new pet cat even though she doesn't want to. Her new kitten is quite the handful and the young lady doesn't warm upto him at first. The comic shows the budding friendship between a new pet owner and the pet. There's very little dialogue and more conveyed through panels. The different cat poses are enough to make you love the book. However, the book is limited to these cat poses and daily life of the owner-cat duo. There isn't a bigger plot. So I'd recommend the book for cat parents who want to see their day-to-day life in comic strips and go 'That's relateable'.

This is an ideal gift for a cat lover because it has all antics of the feline immortalized as art. The claws, scratches everywhere, spoilt winter clothes, the arrogance, being fussy, not moving when the lady has to work, the cuddles and hugs (and scratches again). A cute book.

A really lovely story about the adventures of owning a cat. Really relatable moments and a lovely art style (give me doodles of cats and I'm hooked), I had a very enjoyable time reading this.

UPDATE: After posting my initial review, the publisher got in touch and supplied me with the PDF of the file so I could read it properly and I was not disappointed. Every cat owner will relate to this and more, the illustrations perfectly capture the energetic, chaotic but relentlessly loving relationship that cats give.

I hope we get to see more adventures from Rascal as he grows up!

Old Review: The rating is less so a rating on the content and more for the fact that there were no images to accompany the text.

As I am a cat owner, I could relate to the majority of the narrative as it was but it would have been more entertaining to see the text in context with the illustrations!

Short but sweet graphic novel detailing the trials and joys of cat ownership. Cat owners will recognize quite a bit here and those who are cat adverse are likely to be charmed nonetheless.

Rascal is a slice-of-life graphic novel depicting author Deglin's life with a surprise kitten from her mom. While he may not be the pet she wanted, he's certainly the pet that wants the most in every day. This was a cute graphic novel to read, and I think Deglin really captured many of the mannerisms that cats can/do possess (though this always varies in each cat's personality). Many of the 4-page spreads are wordless yet they still capture the daily life of taking care of a cat. I don't know if I can handle a cat like Rascal, I'm sure that Deglin is able to do so and will have more adventures with him in the future.

An absolutely charming book about an abandoned black kitten and the young woman who becomes his owner.

Any lover of cats will smile with delight & recognition at the delightful 4-panel drawn stories.

Cute, sweet, funny story about a new cat owner. As someone who has spent her entire life around (oh, let's face it, OWNED by) cats, so much of this rang true. Several laugh out loud moments!

A sweet fictional chronicle of a kitten taking over the life of a young woman and the furry felicity that ensues. Well worth a read and pet owners of all species will enjoy the pet life represented in these pages.

A young millennial's life is disrupted when she receives a mewing package in the mail. An acquaintance of her mom needs her kitten watched (and they sent it in a box???) and they decided she was up to the task. To her horror, though, the neighbor ends up dying, leaving her with the cat. She ends up naming it "Rascal" because she's always calling him "you rascal" do to his constant shenanigans.

Anyone who is a cat owner will really enjoy this book. It captures the douchiness of cats while also showing why they make such good pets for introverts. I own a little black cat and spent an hour reading while she slept on my lap. Cats don't make you walk them, and they aren't always affectionate when you want them to be, but that aloofness is precisely what makes their companionship so valuable, and they're very fun to cuddle with if you have hobbies that require keeping still for long periods of time.

That said, RASCAL also captures why cats can be so annoying. The sharp claws. The way they tend to stick their butthole into your face without warning. The way they get bored of the expensive toys you buy them while chewing on your clothes, beauty supplies, and houseplants (basically anything that isn't bolted down and isn't one of their toys). Oh, yes, and the stinky wees and the way they somehow manage to track litter all over the floor--

And don't even get me started on the "presents." My cat recently led me to a "death hoard," where she had amassed a small pile of murdered birds, rodents, and lizards for my purview. (Or should I say, purr-view?) I read somewhere recently that cats do that because they think of us as big dumb cats and it's their way of trying to teach us how to hunt.

I really enjoyed this graphic novel a lot. The way the artist draws the cat contorted into a wide variety of poses was really funny, and I liked the heroine who is his owner. She had a great sense of humor and their relationship was really fun. The only thing I didn't really like about this book was limited to its being an ARC-- I really hate it when people put giant watermarks on the pages of ARCs. I'm not going to steal your book, okay? I'm here to review it-- for FREE-- and that's that. Don't make it harder than it needs to be by stamping a big, ugly distraction smack-dab in the center of each page.

Apart from that, RASCAL was purrfectly adorable. Anyone who loves cats should read this!

Thanks to Netgalley/the publisher for the review copy!

4 to 4.5 out of 5 stars

Have you ever had a cat? Then you will love this graphic novel - it perfectly captures what it's like living with these tiny fur-covered hell beasts we adore. Our narrator didn't intend to end up with a cat - one just sort of ended up with her. Rascal's name is also a descriptor - he's a total rascal who wreaks havoc wherever he goes, but he's also her cat, and as much as he annoys her, she loves her kitty. And so do we. Because Rascal is adorable and he is every cat we've ever had. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm gonna go and cuddle both my furry mini-lions.

I quick, fun read for anyone who has a cat and understands the love/hate relationship with them. The illustrations are entertaining.

As someone that has a cat, this book made me laugh at how accurate it was. The art style of this graphic novel is simple but is really cute and draws the eye. I really enjoyed how simple the storyline was and how you could see the owner growing to love the cat over time. Highly recommend this book!

Aaah, I loved this so much! This is a really cute collection of short comics (each page is a four panel standalone comic) about owning a cat. It has a perfect mix of humour and cuteness and I fell in love with Rascal instantly. There's not too much I can say given that it doesn't have a plot but I felt it perfectly captured so many aspects of owning a cat. I would definitely recommend picking this up if you're a cat owner, cat lover or just want to read some cute comics about an adorable kitten. It would also make a great gift for the cat-obsessed person in your life.
