I'm hooked on the first four chapters and buying the book. Whose this Daniel guy and what is his angle?

Sips tea and squints eyes. Flips page.

Holy wow! This story had me totally hooked from the first chapter.

I love the friendship that Samiah, Taylor and London formed instantly and I cannot wait to read the full book.

The world is absolutely crazy right now and if you are looking for a little escapism: this is the book is it. I got my copy a little while back but I was kind of saving if for when I could just curl up and spend the whole day reading it. That's exactly what I did and it was so worth it.

****minor spoilers ahead****

As soon as I picked it up, I couldn't put it down. I laughed out loud several times. Especially during the scene at the restaurant with all 3 girls. I loved the way that the mc interacted with her sister.

It was really refreshing as well to see the 3 girls come together and turn their anger on the idiot that was playing them. I feel like that's something that popular culture doesn't really like to show us often.

The only thing that I will say is that this book was not as romancy ( is that a word?) as I thought it would be. The chemistry was there but I feel like it took a little bit of a backseat to the mc's personal growth story. That's not even necessarily a bad thing, I really enjoyed it but it just wasn't what I was expecting.

I'd rate this 3.5 and I'll definitely be reading the next one in the series.

... Side note: it took me a minute to read this book because to be honest, I don't think I understood how NetGalley works 🙈. I had to like the take the time to really LEARN and then I found out that I had actually received this extended preview.

Thank you so much to the publisher and Netgalley for this extended preview.

This book immediately grabbed my attention with the first couple scenes. Samiah discover that she was catfished by her boyfriend, Craig, who was also dating two other women. After the three women confront Craig, they make a no-boyfriend pact and decide to focus on themselves. However, when Samiah meets her new co-worker, Daniel, things get a little more complicated. I really enjoyed these characters. I love the friendship that formed between the three women, and Samiah is such an incredibly smart, and strong woman, who is witty and fun! I also found the love interest, Daniel, very swoon worthy, not to mention the chemistry between the two is great. I can’t wait to purchase this novel and continue Samiah and Daniel’s story!

What a way to start off a book! After reading the description I assumed that the confrontation between the 3 women and their shared boyfriend would happen further into the story, but I love that it kicked off this way! The friendship started between the 3 ex girlfriends is awesome, and I"m looking forward to reading more about that plotline. Samiah is already giving me strong female lead vibes, and Daniel seems like a swoon-worthy love interest. I'm loving this book!

This book was a nice read and a great distraction from what’s going on in the world right now. I really enjoyed it if not liking really good contemporary romance with a little bit of mystery an action

Oh this one sounds like it will be fun. We can see right away the closeness of our main character, Samiah, and her sister. She's getting ready for a date with a man she's been seeing for a while. A man who, she learns through a woman live tweeting her bad date, is dating other women. Well, nothing to do but go and confront the lying cheater. Before she knows it, a video of the confrontation goes viral. Soon everyone at work has seen it, and everyone is taking notice of her now. Even the cute new hire, Daniel. I'm excited to read the rest of the novel, and follow Samiah and her sister's antics more. All characters seem to have well-developed personalities and it's very easy to relate to them. Daniel seems like a very strong and sweet love interest from the start, too.

Honestly guys, I was not really feeling this rom com. For me, I felt that Daniel and Samiah just did not have chemistry and the conversations that they were having did not really have depth. I just felt this time was just a really corny read. I am into corny but this was a book that had extra corn in it. I felt that the banter was not witty but a bit played out because the jokes were something you can find in every other rom com book.

I love that Samiah was an intelligent black woman who wanted to give back to other little girls because it really gave her character depth and made her relatable. I was able to understand her need to give back to the little girls who were just like her when she was a child. However, I felt that I was not able to connect with Daniel very much because his character kept being shown as the perfect guy. Even when Daniel did something wrong, it was brushed aside because he did it for the right reasons. I feel that we never truly got to know who he is because he had to hide show much of himself due to his fake identity.

Overall, I just felt that this book did not allow for the reader to truly get to know any of the characters in depth besides Samiah.

This book was SO fun. I’m not a big romance reader and I didn’t particularly care for the love interest, but I love how this book doesn’t just focus on romance. She is a career woman with dreams and ambitions, she stands up for herself, and she goes out of her way to make long lasting connections with friends. It’s such a nice change from the tedious I’m-falling-in-love-and-nothing-else-matters trope. The writing was good and simple like any typical contemporary romance, but I enjoyed reading a BIPOC love story. Like I said, I wasn’t really into the love interest and I thought the whole undercover thing was a bit much, but this book was really about women and for women and I love that.

Well this was unexpected & wonderful! I anticipated a fun, light romance and while it had those things, it was also so much more. Very strong female characters and super supportive friendships. The BF project ladies were the best and it made me miss having girls nights! The relationship between Samiah and Daniel is an office romance, which I am HERE FOR (my husband and I met at work 😄). Since most of their relationship was at work, there was also a focus on Samiah’s struggles as a female, and specifically an African American female, in the tech industry and the biases that she had to overcome as a result. ⁣

Pick it up for the fun romance, but stick around for the badass females! 💪

The Boyfriend Project was the first book I read by Farrah Rochon, and it immediately sent me reading through her backlist. The book begins with Samiah meeting London and Taylor because a sleazy guy was trying to date all three of them at the same time. Their emerging friendship is a key centerpiece to the book, and I always love strong women and female friendships.

I also really loved Samiah's job. The fact that she's a powerhouse in the tech industry who got there because she excels at coding is fantastic. The character and the book are inspiration for girls in STEM. And it doesn't shy away from how difficult a road that is, especially for a Black woman facing discrimination.

Daniel is an amazing hero. I fell in love with him immediately. I enjoyed their story and rooted for them throughout. I highly recommend you read The Boyfriend Project.

I have to admit, this book was not what I expected. I thought the plot would be centered around a bunch of self help quips and tips to make the main character more attractive to find love. Uhm, it was not that or even close to that premise. We start the book with London live tweeting a bad date. Quickly our main female character Samiah realizing the description of the guy and experience sounds strangely familiar to one of her dates. And one more woman Taylor figures out that she may have had the same experience too. The two women break up the bad date to find out that all 3 women were dating the same dusty poser Craig. The 3 women commemorate their time with Craig over a drunken night and become fast friends. The make a pact to take 6 months to focus on themselves before reentering the dating scene. Of course a contemporary romance that pact is tested the very next day. In walks Daniel Collin a new hire at Samiah's job. Daniel and Samiah quickly recognize they are attracted to each other which puts the Boyfriend Project in jeopardy.

This book covers the need to have a friend group who loves you and sees you for you. It touches on the struggle and immense pressure Black women experience and Black women particularly in STEM. Samiah provides examples of the pressure to be perfect and being overlooked. There's a back drop of family dynamics both positive and negative. But I mostly related to, was the journey Samiah took in order to be open to love again. She grappled with past hurt, societal expectations, trying to being vulnerable but not feeling completely able to trust her gut. Rochon did not waste a minute on any of the pages to discuss how fucking hard it is to date when you're a professional woman. The world building was spot on!!!!!

And can we talk about the sweetness of Daniel??? Girl, can I meet a Daniel Collins IRL? He was self-aware, compassionate, emotionally available, and supportive. Yes, yes, yes, and yes.

My only gripe with the book was I didn't love the last chapter. Samiah forgave Daniel too easily, especially since earlier in the book she recognized just forgiving the person doesn't jive if you want to have a healthy relationship. But she did it again. I'm sorry I would have at least punched him in the face. This sentence made me throw the book "I don't mind being collateral damage if it means some really bad people get caught.". No ma'am, that message screams Black women accepting a shit ton of unnecessary emotional labour and being okay that being used for the greater good is a. ok. Let me say it again NO MA'AM. This ending is a good example of how a book can be great read right up until the end. However, I can't be too harsh because I don't like reading the trope of grand gestures in the name of love fixes everything. It felt like one more chapter of rebuilding trust could have been used. Notwithstanding this book was what I needed. I needed to read a well written, multilayered heroine, who finds in an emotional available MoC. So far that, I give this book a 4.5 star.

Well done Farrah Rochon!
