Interesting book that will grab the readers attention from the first time they see the cover. A successful companion to Kaner's other book on animal adaptations, "Do Frogs Drink Hot Chocolate?".

What a cute book with tidbits of animal facts for kids! The illustrations are adorable and at times even comical, perfect to capture a child’s attention.
Each animal featured has a short description of how they keep cool. One example is: “Cape ground squirrels have long, bushy tails that they use like umbrellas. As they look for food under the hot desert sun, they raise their tails over their bodies for shade.”
I think this book would be well suited to parents and teachers alike. Kids could pick one animal to learn about, doing a mini presentation describing how their animal keeps cool and show a drawing or some other artwork they produced to demonstrate.

Summer and heat! Here is a book seasonal and timeless talking about how animals beat the heat. Colorfully illustrated with appropriate text, the question and answer format of the book provides ample opportunities to ensure that the curiosity is provoked and satisfied. The book can be used to play a guessing game in science classrooms, after school STEM programs, or even teach nature education to kids. Highly recommend for inclusion in classroom or school library.

Thanks to NetGalley for providing the book for review.

This books tells us how animals cool down in a funny way that is entertaining which makes it accessible to children. The first idea is how we would cool down but then we learn how they actually do cool down in ways I wouldn't have imagined. Well done! (Already in Goodreads)

My preschool and early childhood STEM classes love "Do Frogs Drink Hot Chocolate?" so I'm excited to see this companion about ways animals stay cool. The wide range of animals and adaptations covered creates plenty of discussion potential as well as easily spinning off into hands on projects and exploration. I especially enjoy the mix of "yes" and "no" answers that keep us guessing about whether each one is something the animals are actually going to do.

Do Lizards Eat Ice Cream? by Etta Kaner is a really entertaining book. I love how the author was able to create such a fun book to talk about animal adaptations. Most kids are obsessed with animals and facts about them, this book will not disappoint. The illustrations are colorful and eye catching. Ever wonder if frogs use sunscreen or if a squirrel uses an umbrella? Well, wonder no more, you'll find your answers inside the book and be delighted along the way.

That cover! The funny text! Such a cool way to show how animals keep cool in the heat. Did you know kangaroos lick their forearms, elephants flap their ears, sea stars drink lots of water? You’ll learn so much more in a charming Q & A format perfect for kids and adults.

A hilarious nonfiction book about what certain animals do to keep cool in the hot sun! A perfect read-aloud, your kids will have fun trying to guess the ingenious ways creatures beat the heat! Do elephants use fans when it's hot? Yes! Sort of. What a silly book! The illustrations infuse the book with an extra element of lighthearted joy. Enjoyable, for sure!

I love a well-structured nonfiction book for kids. "Do Lizards Eat Ice Cream?" explores the ways different animals keep cool in the summer. It's formatted as a question-and-answer, and the questions seem silly enough that you'd think each answer would be "no" but they trick you with some odd yeses! Not only will I recommend this book to kids, I'll use it in displays and in story time. The language is early reader appropriate. The words and pictures are both hilarious. I love this book!

This was such a great read for my four and eight year old. Both loved seeing some of their favorite animals and the new fun facts about all of the animals. I loved the flow and set up of this book, which left a good opportunity for the my daughters to get involved as well.

I think this book would do wonderfully in a classroom setting and especially for kids who are interested in learning more about animals! Thank you so much for this ARC that I was able to enjoy and share with my daughters. We already can't wait to add this book to our shelves.

How Do Animals Keep Cool?

What a fun children's nonfiction book! When I reviewed an advance reader copy of this, it was the height of summer—the perfect time to query how animals beat the heat, the subject of this book. It's done in a question-and-answer fashion. First, the author poses the question: would a particular animal do something like a human would do to avoid the heat (like the ice-cream-eating lizard of the title)? This is followed with an answer—yes, yes (sort of), or no—and then an explanation of what precisely that animal does to avoid the sun or keep cool. For most animals and ways of cooling down, the animals are not like humans. But a few interesting ones are, like the lungfish that can burrow under mud, protect itself with bubbles, and wait for rain for up to two years. Or a certain variety of frog that makes its own sunscreen. If your child enjoys obscure facts about animals, she or he would most likely enjoy this book. It should be read aloud to a younger child, as the fact page would be beyond the abilities of an early reader. A slightly older child could read the book herself or himself. An entertaining book that teaches some very cool animal trivia.

I requested and received an e-ARC of this book from Etta Kaner and Owlkids Books through NetGalley in exchange for my honest opinion.

This was a fun non-fiction book that explains how animals beat the heat. As each new animal is introduced you are asked a funny question like "Do lizards eat ice cream?" The question is then answered with the facts about how the animal cools itself down. I think kids will enjoy learning these facts as they are delivered in a fun way with great illustrations.

I received an electronic ARC from OwlKids Books through NetGalley.
Kaner asks a series of questions as readers learn about various animals and how they stay cool. Readers can make their guess before turning the page to see if the answer is yes or no and to learn interesting facts about each animal covered. Clever and colorful illustrations draw readers in to see how they stay cool.
Terrific read aloud for lower elementary classes doing animal units.

Cute nonfiction picture book to learn about what different animals do to cope with the heat. Fun format where a seemingly ridiculous question is posed - Does *animal* do *thing*? But sometimes it's actually true! (or at least close)

Thank you to the publisher for an advance copy of this book! It was read with my five year old.

What a great idea for a kids book! My daughter loved the funny sentences and pictures to start off each new animal. They caught her attention quickly! And she was intrigued as to the answer. What a clever way to teach kids about animals! Highly recommend for any kids that love animals. Even as an adult reading this book with her, I learned a thing or two!

I received an ARC through NetGalley from Owlkids Books. My 5-year-old gave this book 5 stars. This non-fiction picture book asks funny questions about animals and gives the reader the “real” answers. For instance, do elephants use fans? Yes (sort of) because they use their ears to cool down, but the book also tell the reader why by explaining about the blood vessels in their ears. Big bright illustrations, interactive and large Yes/No answers, and very good and specific explanations. Perfect book for kids that want to learn something new. This book has flexibility in the aging because you can talk about as much as they can understand. Recommended ages 3-7.
