This cover is perfect for this story. I loved the Audio it brought it that much more to life. However. the first chapter was anything but. I feel like it was incredibly unnecessary. Naturally love Freya's work. This one, though, just wasn't my jam. I'm not sure if I will continue this series. Could just be me being a mood reader... Read and make up your own mind.
After an accident on the subway which leaves Mia afraid of being around crowds and suffering PTSD she moves to live in a little cabin in a secluded area on a beautiful lake.
Jared, her neighbour a newly retired hockey player does not make a good first impression with his drinking and blatant philandering ways!
When Mia has to come to Jared’s sister, Jordys help when she suddenly goes into labour a truce between the two starts to develop into something more.
The narrators of this book did a fantastic job. They were so very easy to listen to and their voices portrayed the characters emotion excellently. The story itself was well written but sometimes lagged. Overall I found this really enjoyable.
After a career ending injury Jared is enjoying a period of freedom as he decides what direction the future will hold. The one thing that he does know is that his life is about to change when his sister Jordy, who is pregnant and alone, moves in with him. Over a decade earlier a devasting experience cost Mia the life she knew. She has moved to a cabin on the water and limits her interactions with other people so having Jared and his sister next door is more difficult than she imagined.
This was not a book for me from the first line to admittedly not quite the end although I did persevere past the ridiculous first chapter.
Despite my endeavours I was just never drawn into the unrealistic characters and lack of decent plot.
Thanks for the Arc from netGalley
The blurb caught my attention but after that I lost my interest and didn't read this book. Maybe next time.
A Change in Tide introduced me to the work of Freya Baker. I thought the main characters would be in the late twenties or early thirties age group. However, it surprised me to discover they were older, which I appreciated. This is the first book in the Northern Lights series, and I have to say it’s off to a good start.
In this installment, we get Mia and Jared’s story. Mia, a divorcee and a midwife, lives in seclusion in a lake house, a choice she made after being diagnosed with agoraphobia. Living at the lake house provided her , however her peaceful life would be disturbed when Jared, a retired hockey player, moved in next door.
Mia’s first impression of Jared did not go well. Witnessing him in a compromising position with a woman she believed to be his girlfriend, then not soon after she sees a pregnant woman moving in with him. However, things are not always as one may first perceive.
I have to my first impression of Jared was far from flattering, but as the story progressed my feelings towards him changed. Jared oozed confidence. Strong, determined, protective and an excellent cook. He refused to let his career ending injury impact him negatively. Instead, he worked on finding other ways to utilise his skills. He was not afraid to go after what he wants, and Mia was in his sights. I admired Mia’s willingness to help someone in need and her feistiness. Both are complex characters and I had fun peeling away their layers.
I loved the friendship and the romance which developed between Mia and Jared. They took time to know each other and learnt a lot. The biggest revelation was learning of their connection through a tragedy they both suffered on the same day. Both characters showed tremendous growth throughout the story, especially Mia.
The story featured some humorous situations that had me giggling whenever they occurred. It moved at a steady pace to a large extent. The reader got the chance to witness Jared's sister going through her own share of issues and finding happiness in the end.
Narration
With this story we got a dual narration. This is the first time I have listened to narrators Tor Thom and Charley Ongel. I think they did an excellent job in bringing out the temperament of the characters. Their range of voices and tone enhanced the listening experience. Their voices were distinct making easy to distinguish between the characters they are representing.
Overall, A Change In Tide delivered a well-written romance featuring mature characters with real-life problems and realistic flaws.
DNF at 7% I hated the male narrator's voice. It was not my cup of tea! I did not like all of the explicit content. It made me feel very uncomfortable listening to it. I really wanted to like this book but I just couldn't"t.
Romance novels are my guilty pleasure. Because of that, I was quite interested in reading "A Change In Tide" by Freya Barker. "A Change in Tide" is a story of Mia, a former midwife that now lives in a cabin on a lake as a basic recluse. Her neighbor is Jared, a hockey player who recently had to retire due to an injury. He moved to a house across the lake from Mia. Through a series of events they meet and fall in love.
I wanted to like this book. I really did. Quite frankly though, this book got on my nerves. Mia was annoyingly neurotic, without any real reason given to why she was that way. Or more specifically, a reason was given, but it did not justify her extreme response. Jarad is annoyingly perfect. He's handsome and kind and takes in his single pregnant sister. And most importantly, Jarad and Mia didn't seem to have any chemistry.
Honestly, I just found this book tedious. I wanted to like it, but it just fell short of expectations.
A beautiful intimate story! Mia and Jared had their life turned upside down by the same event. Each of them handled it differently though. When they share their losses their chemistry shifts into high gear.
I finally was able to track down a copy of this book: for whatever reason, I was unable to download this book after I requested and received an ARC when it first came out on NetGalley. I was glad I finally came across this title on the internet. I suspect I hadn't realized that this was an audiobook, so when I went to look for it on my Kindle, it was nowhere to be found. I was able to scrounge up an ebook version of this book, and am now happy to file my review.
Being a Canadian, I was very pleased to find that the book is set in northern Ontario - around Bracebridge. Toronto (my neck of the woods) is also referred to.
The author does a great job of characterization and world building. I was certainly transported to the less populated wilderness of that remote area: beautiful country with breathtaking views and plenty of wildlife.
The opening scene of this story is certainly an eye opener, in more ways than one!
Mia, a former midwife, suffers from PTSD from injuries she received during the2003 North Eastern Blackout. Jared's NHL career is over due to a severe knee injury. These two walking wounded find comfort in each other.
I like how Jared talks Mia through a few of her panic attacks. Mia helps deliver Jared's sister's baby, and the two become friends. Jared's sister is a single parent. Jared convinces Jordy to come live with him. Mia helps Jared and Jordy when litte Oliver is born. Jordy and Mia become friends, and Mia is reminded that she wanted to have children, but her PTSD demolished her life and any chance of a family with it. I was glad to see that Jared was willing to pass up a promising coaching career because he wanted to stay close to his sister during these early days. His initial introduction as a player in the first chapter is a bit misleading. With each passing chapter, we see him slowly morph into the decent guy that his sister Jody insists he is.
This was an engrossing, relaxing read. Gentle, but with just enough action and angst to keep the plot moving. A nice slow burn, with plenty of sizzle here and there, and a satisfying HEA - for everyone, including little Oliver!
Jared was attractive the instant he appeared in the book. The love he has for family is incredible. Jared takes after his pregant sister ( reader melting) Jared changing diapers and falling in love with the baby (reader falls over) Mia being a midwife and a helful neighbor created a boy/girl next door trope. I absolutely loved it. I enjoyed the narrator also. Thank you NetGalley for my ARC in exchange for my honest review.
3 1/2 stars...
I found myself enjoying the story one minute and disliking things about it the next. I found the main storyline regarding Mia's past history and agoraphobia to be well done and believable. I just wanted to scoop her up and fix her. Then when you realize everything else she's dealt with in her life, it's easy to understand her fragile state. I instantly felt a connection to her and was rooting for her to conquer her fear and retake her life.
Then there's Jared. He initially started this book on my "oh no he didn't" list. We are subjected to a very overt scene between him and another woman. One which our heroine, Mia, witnesses. This leads her to form an impression of him that is less than favorable. I think this part of the storyline could have been handled without the detailed description of Jared's promiscuous acts with the "other woman." Being told that it happened and Mia had seen it would have been satisfactory, in my opinion.
Given the beginning of the story and Jared's "actions," it took me a while to warm up to him. However, once I did, I was all in. Jared really was a family man who cared deeply about his sister's welfare, as well as Mia's. He was dealing with some of his own issues when they initially meet and is trying to find his own new path in life to travel.
I actually listened to the audiobook. I struggled with the narration early on and wasn't sure I'd be able to listen to the entire book. However, eventually their voices grew on me and I was able to continue.
Thank you to NetGalley for this audiobook. I voluntarily chose to review it and the opinions contained within are my own.
Imagine one day that changed both of your lives forever...Jared and Mia are exactly what the other needed when their lives feel like they are spiraling out of control. The balance they provide each other heals their shattered pasts and finding what they needed all along. Each other. This is the first story I’ve read from Freya and it will not be the last!
Mia moves to the middle of nowhere so she can cope with a tragedy that she experienced on a subway. Jared plays hockey but after a career ending injury he becomes the hermit living across the water from Mia.
First there were some serious problems with the audiobook file. I am hoping that it was just a Netgalley glitch, but tracks were skipping around and this led to chapters jumping back and forth and this impacted the story.
The first chapter was super awkward. I understand that it was put in to show that Jared was a player and slept around, but beginning the book with a sex scene just felt out of place. Jared is also has this constant disgust at his sister and it got really old. He loves her, but it felt like he was just whining about having to help his sister.
The book did get better as it went on, but there was so much toxic masculinity that I disliked most of the characters for a large part of the book. I did tough it out until the end and I ended up liking it, I think that first chapter just influenced my opinion of Jared and Mia.

I really enjoyed this audiobook.
The narrators are terrific!
It had a bit too much telling and not showing at the beginning. But overall I really liked it.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for providing an arc in exchange for my honest review.
I really enjoyed A Change in Tide by Freya Barker, mainly for the emotional reaction her words cause. To lose everything, almost overnight to a fear you never saw coming, to feel so vulnerable around others, even when buying groceries, I can only imagine.
For Mia, she has spent years hiding from those fears, until the day Jared arrives and makes splashing waves in the sea of tranquility. What starts as a perceived clash of personalities, slowly develops into a friendship and inevitably something more.
The dual narration of this story is perfect and I would recommend this 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 audiobook and ebook to anyone looking for something to while away the time on their daily commute, working from home, or escaping the same four walls.
My thanks to the author and Spectrum Audio for allowing me to review this book.
A beautiful emotional romance between a traumatised woman and a man who has had his whole life upended when he needs to be there for his family!
Freya Barker has taken mental health issues and perfectly blended it into an emotional romance that was not only enjoyable but also reflective!
While this was definitely not my favourite read from Ms. Barker - mostly cause the chemistry between the MCs seemed honestly too forced - while I am all for opposites attract romance trope, it somehow didn’t actually work for me and it didn’t work for them either. It felt more of a forced proximity relationship rather than a true one!
I loved the writing style, like always - Ms. Barker never disappoints with her talent; however this time it was her characters that didn’t actually cooperate with her!
I love the new Audio Excerpt with Netgalley. I really enjoyed A Change in Tide! The narrators will have yiu hooked! The flow easily with the characters, and the story itself was intriguing that I am excited to hear more!!! Watch out! This one will make you want to know what happens next!!!
I have mixed feelings about this audiobook and it wasn’t because of the narrators they were great. I almost didn’t listen to this one because I really didn’t like how the heroine saw the hero for the first time. And if you listen/read it maybe you understand me. While I gave it the opportunity to this book and enjoyed most of it I was mad at some things that I felt wasn’t necessary. It was awesome how the heroine was a midwife. Love the reference about that topic and how she progress trough the end of the book and the slow burn chemistry was off the charts. The friendship between Mia and Jordy was sweet. I wish we get Jordy story too. All in all is an entertaining book. Give it a try!
