I really love audiobooks, so when I was given a chance to review A Change in Tide, I decided to go for it. I've listened to Tor Thom before and really liked him before. This book was a first for Charley Ongel, and I really enjoyed her as well, and can't wait to listen to more from her.

This story is told from dual points of view by Mia and Jared. They both live off the grid and are neighbors. Mia's life changed when a crowded subway blacked out and she has panic attacks ever since. Jared has a career-ending injury to hockey and moved there to get away from fans.

Together Mia and Jared work through their battles, and help each other. Can Mia overcome her fears to be there for Mia. Can Jared go back to the hockey world and have Mia in his life.

I really liked this book, and the narrators were fantastic!

This started out as an easy, laid back sort of read, which I really appreciate during a pandemic. There’s only so much I can wrap my brain around that is “extra” these days, so I enjoyed how consumable this one was. However, it grew deeper the longer I read, which I also appreciated.

The audio narration, by Charley Ongel and Tor Thom, was good. I liked Charley Ongel a lot. She has the kind of voice that is just so easy to listen to and compliments but doesn’t distract from the story. Tor Thom has a very deep voice that I found soothing and sexy.

My only complaint with this one is that there is just a bit too much telling and not quite enough showing at the beginning of the book. I confess, I sometimes zoned out in the beginning and had to rewind, but the longer I listened, the better it got. It pulled me in with time, and I almost forgot that I even had any concerns at the start. So if you start this one and feel a bit uncertain, just keep onward, until you get to the heart of the story.

Freya Barker's A Change in Tide is a beautiful story about healing and finding love.
I'd already read the book and was very excited for the audiobook. And it didn't disappoint.
Both narrator's brought Freya's characters to life beautifully.

ARC kindly provided by NetGalley. This is my honest opinion.

A Change In Tide is a standalone contemporary romance by Freya Barker. I read this in the form of audiobook courtesy from NetGalley, using their new NetGalley Shelf app.

I have no issues with the storyline, I quite enjoyed it. This is a solid story with pretty decent fleshed out characters, steamy sexy moments and good pacing. My huge issue is however with the NetGalley app itself. While I have no problems downloading e-books, I have a lot of difficulty downloading the audiobook. It took me 3 times to download the audiobook successfully and even then, it took me 2hours and 45minutes to do so! When it comes to reading the book, it skipped pages! If I were to pause a page, it didn't continue on the same page. The app is still a mess and hopefully NetGalley will do something about it.

This is the first book I've read from Freya Barker and I enjoyed it. Mia and Jared are neighbors and I love how they build a little family with Jared's sister and her child. Jared was a hockey star forced to retire and through the relationship, they had to deal with the issues associated with his fame but also her past (she can't be in crowds which is why she isolated herself in the area). I think that the relationships were beautifully built and described although sometimes, the story felt like it was going a bit too slowly. But overall, I enjoyed the story.

I love that NetGalley now has audiobooks and this audiobook was well done, overall. Charley Ongel's male voice feels a bit forced and overdone while Tor Thom's deep voice is very beautiful but he still did a pretty good job making his feminine voice relatively natural. Overall, I enjoyed the narration. Thanks NetGalley!

Jared has been living in the fast lane but now that an injury has permanently benched him he is trying to find his footing again. He builds a wilderness retreat across the lake from Mia. Mia is suffering from PTSD and has secluded herself in her small cabin in the woods enjoying the quiet until that is Jared arrives, with his smokin hot body and her ability to oggle him from across the lake. When Jared's very pregnant sister comes to live with him and they get caught out on the lake when her water breaks Mia arrives to the rescue as a trained midwife and becomes caught up in their lives.

Two people with past tragedies in common find love in each others arms. This is a really nice well written romance. The narration was good and there were some steamy scenes but not extremely graphic. I really enjoyed it I'm going to have to look for other books by this author.

What I was able to listen to,the narrators are fantastic! I really would like to know where the story goes! New to doing this on Net Gallery but I'm so glad this is available! I have a kindle e-reader and kindle fire, didn't have a problem with downloading this one but I did on another! Again, would love to see what happens! There is some crude language in what little bit I was able to listen to,I thought I was going to be able to listen to the whole story. Disappointed for me but if there's a lot of the crude language,no matter how great the story seems to be of the characters or the writing style,I won't finish the book. That's just me,I figure there's other words that can be used in place.

This is my first by this author. I am officially a fan. I really enjoyed listening to the audiobook and the narration was wonderful. It was a really pleasant change to listen to a well written interesting story about adults, mostly adulting or at least trying to. We meet Mia, who suffers from debilitating panic attacks and is a borderline agoraphobe. Her world has become very small and though she is working on it does feel somewhat resigned to being where she is at. She lost her husband due to her issues, had to give up her work as a mid-wife, which she absolutely adored and has created a small, quiet, but lonely life. Across the way is Jared, a recently professional hockey player who she initially does not like at all based on her first “sighting” of him. Our initial intro to him shows him a a jerk’’ish kind of unrepentant jock who as he can’t play his beloved game any more is floundering. First impressions are not always right. Also there is his pregnant sister who is just out of a terrible relationship with a horrible man. We get to go along on their journey while figuring out how to navigate their complicated lives, learning to trust, love and move forward. I am looking forward to the next in the series. Hopefully also available as an audiobook!

Though I’ve only read and/or listened to just a handful of stories by this author, each one has been riveting and about mature and older individuals that have had to face the ups and downs of life. This one was no excepting.
This story centers around Mia and Jared. Unbeknown to them, an incident over 10 years ago changed both their lives.
Mia, once an outgoing and successful midwife, is now a shell of herself suffering from panic attacks and agoraphobia. She left the city for the quiet of a small town and lives near a lake. While Jared’s career as a successful NHL player ended after a devastating injury. He’s known as a “player” and recently moved near her cottage to a mansion.
Chance brings them together. But can Mia trust him enough to let go of her fears? Can Jared become the man she needs and help her overcome her past and her fears? Can each offer the other what they need or will they each go their separate ways never knowing if they could have a future together?
This story , at times heartbreaking, was also heartwarming and touching. A reminder that our past experiences can deeply affect us to the point of changing our lives, our goals and even our character.
Though I had purchased and read the ebook, I enjoyed more the audio since it brought the story to life. The audio was well narrated and though I am not used to having two different narrators, they blended well and we always knew who was speaking .
I was entrusted the audio by Netgalley. The opinions expressed are solely my own.

I love audiobooks. I love being able to do two things at the same time so when Netgalley announced they were going to be audiobooks ARCs available very soon, I got excited. A Change In Tide is the first audiobook I got this way and I can't be more happy to listen to a romance to start.

Unfortunately, I feel like the app might have some problems especially since I kept feeling like the chapters were all mixed up and I had to check every time if it didn't skip a chapter (going from chapter 3 to 5, 6 to 8 etc.) Now, I don't think it's an audiobook problem as I've seen the same comment somewhere else about another audiobook. My only hope is that Netgalley will see this issue and fix it.

Now, about this book!

A Change in Tide follows Mia, a woman living in a cottage on the lake. After an accident in a subway, she kept having panic attacks when she left her home so she moved where very few people are around. She has to deal with PTSD and agoraphobia. The only thing breaking her peace is the new neighbor and player, Jared. The first time she sees him is naked and having sex with a blonde woman. When his pregnant sister visits him and start her labour early, Mia who used to be a midwife doesn't hesitate to give her help. From there, Jared and here will only get closer and closer.

I was immediately hooked by the audiobook. The narrators did a really good job (even though the female narrator had some cracking in the background at the beginning). Overall, I enjoyed it!

(Thank you for letting me listen and review an ARC via Netgalley)

First of all, the audiobook for this was really, really good. The narrators are new-to-me, but I really liked them. The male narrator had such a nice, deep voice.

While I feel like this story was longer than it needed to be, I did really like it. I especially appreciated that the main character was a midwife who supported the hero’s sister throughout her “4th trimester.” It’s obvious the author has experience with all the nuances that come along with breastfeeding and all the attachment parenting things that I went through as a new mom. I had so many flashbacks to when my girls were newborns reading this book - it even made me nostalgic for those days as hard as they were!

I love this take on the hockey player trope. While it plays a big part in the story, especially toward the end, it’s different since Jared is retired due to an injury.

While I don’t have agoraphobia, the representation of the anxiety part of her disorder was done really well.

I loved how Jared took care of his sister and how well the heroine fit into their little family.

The journalist was incredibly annoying and seemed a bit over the top.

This book definitely made me wish I had a nice, secluded lake house across from a famous hockey player! Lol!

This is my first read by Freya. While it wasn't bad, it just had that simple small town vibe, but I felt it needed more prominent secondary characters to add something to the story. Things were just convenient with what was going on and even with the characters backgrounds. I will say I like the cover, but it doesn't fit the story season frame.

Narrators Charley Ongel, and Tor Thom were perfect for their characters.

I received this audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this unbiased review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

Jared and Mia were fun to get to know, and I loved the ancillary characters as well. I really appreciated that Mia was dealing with a mental health issue and that we were able to see that progress throughout the book. It was cute and definitely sexy! I loved every minute of it.

I did notice that the female narrator had some sort of an echo when it was Mia’s part. It was a little distracting, but certainly not enough to stop reading the book.

I really enjoyed this book and devoured it in just a few days. This is my first Freya Barker book and I was impressed by her writing. It was very easy to be pulled in and you were able to get a clear picture of the characters. Fairly lighthearted with some steamy scenes.
The narrators were also an asset to this book. At first it sounded a little slow but the pace picked up. I love when books use two narrators especially to distinguish male and female characters. It helps to make the text feel more like someone telling their own story.
Mia lives a quiet, secluded life on a lake after a traumatic subway ride. Jared, an ex pro hockey player, moves in across the lake with his sister and shakes up her world.
Thank you to the Netgalley for a copy of the audiobook. All opinions are my own.

Thanks to NetGalley and Spectrum Audio for the alc of this book.

I really loved A Change In Tide by Freya Barker. I feel like I end up reading a lot of books with people just straight out of college or really just beginning their adult lives. A Change In Tide is about two mature adults who are sort of in crossroads of their lives. Mia and Jared are two people who had solid careers who through different circumstances are now taking a break from their professional lives and trying to take some solace in retreat.

Mia is a former midwife who is agoraphobic and has retreated to this lake community for the solitude. Jared is a retired hockey player who is escaping the limelight and trying to figure out what his next move is with regards to career. The secondary characters in this book were really great too.

Overall this book is a slow burn but I really enjoyed watching the relationship between these two develop. As far as steam goes I'd rate this as medium steam. There are definitely some sexy times and they are pretty explicit.

So if you are a fan of slow burn romances where you really get to watch a relationship develop, with people who have real, serious issues to contend with, this is a good one. If you like you like your romances to fade into black, this will definitely not be the book for you.

NARRATION: I thought the two narrators on this one did a really good job of bringing the characters to life. Each chapter focuses on either Mia or Jared's viewpoint with the female narrator for Mia's viewpoint and the male for Jared's. Within each viewpoint the narrator's will depict the voices of both male and female characters. I will admit that on occasion when you transferred viewpoints, the very deep voice of the male narrator could be jarring. It was an easy adjustment to make, and I think he does a fine job with narrating, it just takes a second to adjust.

I am an audiobook fan, and I have listened to Tor Thom (male narrator) before, but both Freya Barker (author) and Charley Ongel (female narrator) are new for me.

A Change in Tide was a well-crafted story, with a solid plot and good character development, especially on the part of Jared. The first chapter, Jared was a self-described immature womanizer, and I honestly was not sure if I was going to like his character. But Freya Barker really gave him the opportunity to grown into more than the stereotypical womanizing jock that he started out as. The book and narration are from the dual point of view of both Jared and Mia, and I really enjoy getting both sides of the story, the attraction and the emotion. Both Jared and Mia were driven to life 'off the grid' - Jared by a career-ending injury and Mia by panic attacks.

The story was well paced and contained the right amount of heart, heart and emotion. The narration was great. Tor Thom and Charley Ongel both did wonderful jobs expressing the characters' emotions, consternation, wonderment and fragility when it was called for.

While romance readers will delight in the sweet romance that unfolds within this story, the heavier topics of PTSD, overcoming loss, overcoming rejection and so much more are the meat of this plot. Intriguing characters that draw you into their individual background's and life story's will have you lost in their world for hours of entertaining listening as you just won't be able to turn this book off! The narrators do an excellent job of enhancing the personalities of the characters and helping them feel even more alive. This was my first experience with this author and I must say I will be looking for more from them as they weave an excellent story that draws you and captures you immediately!

I received an ARC of this book through NetGalley in exchange for my unbiased opinion.

Mia has lived at her quiet cottage in the wilderness for the past 10 years, since an incident in a subway left her with PTSD and agoraphobia. She is content with her quiet life on the lake until a new neighbor moves in next to her. After a knee injuries ends Jared's hockey career, the man known on the ice as The Enforcer buys a house out of the public eye to figure out what comes next for him. He is intrigued by the reclusive woman who lives next to him.

This book was not for me. I had so many problems with. First, how close were these two living to each other than Mia was able to see that her neighbor was having unprotected sex with another woman? Second, after struggling with her PTSD and agoraphobia for 10 years, she is suddenly able to go out in public again just because Jared and/or his sister are with her? The therapist should've just made her make a friend several years ago. *eye roll* Third, Jared had that caveman type personality that grates. Fourth, the characters were all flat. I will not be checking out more books from this author.

I thoroughly enjoyed this one and had it in audio and the narrators did a wonderful job! Mia is suffering from PTSD and agoraphobia and so moved to the woods to live quietly. Her new neighbor is a surprise when first she catches him with one woman and then almost immediately moves in another...a pregnant one. The biggest surprise is when the pregnant one turns out to be his sister and she ends up delivering that baby. Jared is newly retired from the NHL after a career ending injury. All he wants is the quiet and to help his sister raise her baby. The neighbor is pleasant surprise. The chemistry between them is slow to build but unmistakable. Definitely a recommendation from me!

Thank you Netgalley and Spectrum Audiobooks for giving a chance to listen to this book. The narrators were awesome. The book gives the perspective of both the main characters Mia and Jared.

Mia who suffers from anxiety after a subway blackout meets her new neighbor Jared a hockey star who retired a year ago because of a knee injury. They both help and support each other and get closer.

I like the author's writing style and all characters seem so realistic. She has highlighted some issues in the story like anxiety and injury. It was a nice story overall. I definitely recommend it.

4 1/2 Stars for this emotional story!

I haven’t listened to an audiobook in a long time. I was going on a road trip, so I thought I would download this and give it a try. I found the voices and the story mesmerizing right from the first chapter. But I was a little disappointed that when Mia was narrating she spoke for Jared’s voice ... I would have liked Jared to speak for himself as well as Mia speak for herself.

I loved the fact that Mia and Jared were older as the story took on a more mature theme. Ms Barker’s writing style is realistic with issues that affect everyday people. Mia was just so broken and I loved that she felt safe in Jared’s arms even thought she didn’t know why. And Jared is this big tuff ex-NHL player with a soft heart and protective nature for not only his sister and nephew, but for his neighbour Mia. And then the steamy scenes were HOT! A great start to the series.

"A Change In Tide" by Freya Barker

My Speculation:

"A Change In Tide" was an excellent audio read where the narrators did an excellent job of portraying to the reader a satisfying story. We find out that the heroine suffered from PTSD and agoraphobia and thought to move to a secluded area would be the answer for her life living in a secluded life on a lake. However, a new neighbor moves in, Jared, who had just retired from the NHL due to a knee injury, moves in along with his sister, and Mia's life will never be the same. Believe it, Jared only wanted a quiet place to live while helping his sister with her new baby. So, what will happen when Mia and Jared meet up? It was fun listening to how the meet up began, and all the bantering that went on with touches of humor enhanced many parts of the read that did a lot to shake up Mia's world. All of the characters in this story were all very well developed and defined, giving the reader an excellent read.

Well, this is where I say you will have to pick up this good read to see how it all happens. It will be a heck of a story that will keep you listening to its story.

Thank you to Spectrum Audio through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

This is the first time I have read or listened to this author and it is apparent she knows how to write a book dealing with emotional issues is a responsible manner. I was able to feel Mia's fear like they were my own. And quite honestly, I can't imagine living frozen and fearful like that for the rest of my life like some people do. Mia's character was hard for me to connect with because I have never felt the things she did so I couldn't relate to her till halfway through the storyline. Don't get me wrong.... her character was well written I just had nothing in my life that I could compare it to and create an instant connect with.

As for Jared's position I know the feeling of losing one's career due to an injury and know how it feels to be lost about the next move, so for me the author did an outstanding job in this area of her storyline. His care for his sister and her situation was so admirable and watching him change was very rewarding.

How the author handles everyone's messy life is believable and so realistic it's remarkable to read. Her ability to transition three people who felt powerless to people who were powerful survivors was remarkable.

I will have to say that the only area I got stuck was with the narrators. The transitions between male and female and all the different characters didn't always feel smooth to me. I am looking forward to the next audiobook in this series.

Once again the voice acting duo of Tor Thom and Charley Ongel team up to bring Freya Barker's, A Change In Tide, to life.

A Change In Tide is the start of the Northern Lights series by Freya Barker and new to audio.

The story is a fast paced easy 'read', although I'd personally suggest changing the speed in which this is 'delivered' when listening.

I found the story to be an interesting take on a reclusive woman and a recently retired hockey star. The melding of their lives and the way their relationship develops, is fairly classic.

There was lots to like about this series and will certainly be looking for others as they become available.

Mia had a rather scary experience on a subway five years ago. So scary that it caused a big change in her mental stability and she suffered debilitating panic and anxiety attacks. She has to quit her beloved job and a midwife and moved out into the country where she found a small cabin on the lake. Then she got herself a new neighbor. Jared was a NHL hockey player. He suffered a career ending injury and once he recovered from the surgery he needed he decided to move out to the country for privacy and to help his pregnant sister the only family he has. The first chapter is this book was a bit off putting. It did not paint the hero in a good light at all. I think that chapter could have been left out. Overall a enjoyable story with a bonus story with Jared's sister Jordy finding a great guy too.
