As usual, the Manga Classics takes a beautiful story that I love and brought it to life in a new and unique way. I love Anne of Green Gables and this manga did not disappoint. It was a quick read with beautiful art. The scenes that were chosen to feature in this manga were perfect and encapsulated the story well. I would recommend this to anyone who is a fan of this classic tale, interested in picking up the story, or wants to understand the story before watching a screen adaptation of it.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for giving me an eARC in exchange for my honest opinion.

This was so cute. I loved the retelling of this classic. The artwork was able to evoke emotions just as the original words do.

I was given a copy of this from the publishers and netgalley exchange of an honest review.

Let me preface this by saying I LOVE ANNE OF GREEN GABLES. Like it’s one of my favourite books the the whole wide world and I know it backwards and forwards.

The manga adaptation may not look exactly how I imagined it, but it is an accessible way for someone who doesn’t like classics or finds them daunting to read classics.

The scenery is taken directly from the real PEI (Prince Edward island) in Canada, which is also lovely. The manga is fast paced so it’s easy to get through without dragging and very accurate to the book. In fact, having listened to the radio full cast play approximately 3000 times I can see that the dialogue is almost identical as well. Another triumph.

I would definitely recommend this to anyone of any age. If you want to get into classics and they’re scary or you’d like to get a child into reading this is perfect. It’s also nice to see more of the thoughts of the characters.
I highly recommend!

It's been many years since I read Anne of Green Gables as a child. Reading this Manga Classic version captures all the distinctive memories I have - Anne's enthusiasm, her courage, and her way of seeing the good in all the world around her. The art style can really make or break a manga, and the adorable art really lends well to the beauty of Anne's story.
For struggling readers, this Manga Classics edition may well be a great foot-in-the-door approach to Anne of Green Gables. It delivers the essential message and beauty of the story in an easy-to-read and follow along format.

Anne of Green Gables has been adapted into a manga! This was the perfect occasion for me to revisit a childhood classic I really enjoyed as a teen. It is the type of girly read I still like to indulge in, sweet and uplifting. By principle I don’t reread books, there is too many works out there to discover, I know I have to make a selection and go wide if I want to explore the most stories possible in my lifetime, so an adaptation gives me an excuse to delve back into the past. I was really glad for the opportunity offered me by NetGalley for this ARC.

For those who don’t know, Anne of Green Gable is about a romantic 11 years old orphan girl (in the sense her imagination is overflowing with love for nature and starving for friendship) who is accidentally adopted by an elderly brother and sister who needed a boy to help them on their farm. It is one of those countryside novels where not much happens, set in the turn of last century, but that awakens some soothing countryside living melancholia in those prone to that type of feeling. Almost all characters are good natured and the drama rises from the misunderstandings and natural life events that occurred at the time.

The pictures are lovely, full of bubbly manga happiness and the usual attention to details we find in them. I loved getting the full map of the house at the end of the book, and the insight into the adaptor’s thinking and feelings on the novel. The artists were very respectful of the original book and there was a lot of love in their work. I think the book will particularly talk to the people who love the new TV series on Anne, or people who want a new Downton abbey. I can imagine teens also will enjoy this quick read, and I think it can replace the novel.

It is a good adaptation, but personally I was shocked to realise I didn’t actually care about the original story any more. I don’t know if it’s because I grew up, if I was not in the right frame of mind for that type of peaceful work, but the charm didn’t operate again and I ended up wondering why Anne of Green Gable was such a classic. As I read I remembered all the passages of the book, but I couldn’t see the point anymore. Some events felt rushed or glossed over and I remembered they also were in the novel, and this time around it bothered me. I admit it made me a little sad that it didn’t touch me anymore. Maybe I’m in too much of a hurry these days and couldn’t appreciate its slow pace and call to see everyday beauty. Anne was also less adorable to me in this adaptation, due in part to some mannerism convention of the manga that I had not pictured in my mind.

Even if I was not completely taken, I think this manga will make teens and new adults who are discovering Jane Austen, Little Women and other similar works, very happy. It is pretty and made with lots of insight and care. I think it is in fact the perfect way to introduce reluctant classic readers to what they are missing and might make them want to dig deeper.

Combining these wonderful classics with manga is brilliant. The format is sure to draw interest in the younger generations, exposing them to classical literature and making it enjoyable in a medium they are more comfortable with. The story lost none of the original adventures that drew so many to not only read the book, they watched the PBS series. I've already shared with aa few middle school age children whose verdict was "cool" and "awesome". I think that translates to 5 stars!

Anne of Green Gables

I love Anne of Green Gables. Being able to read it in a manga was amazing and being able to see it outside of my head. It was so good.

Anne of Green Gables has been one of my favourite classic children's book for a while now. I own many different copies, some of them illustrated. For me, the illusrations never relly added anything to the storyline or made a difference in how much pleasure it gave me to read about Anne's adventures..
Mangas and mahwas were my obsession growing up. They were a way to learn english and were accessible online.
I love both genres separately. Did I ever imagine that this two genres intertwined would result in something enjoyable? Not for one minute, especially when it comes to depicting an iconic character such as Anne with an "e".
However I was pleasantly surprised to realize that I was wrong.
This manga works on so many levels I can not believe. that until this edition I've never realized how similar the original "Anne of Green Gables" - with it's emotional ups and downs plus the mixture of drama and hilarious events - is to mangas and animes.
Since I can't really review the content and dialogues themselves, I can only say that this was a pleasent read and I would recommend it to anyone who loves cute mangas and/or the original story of Anne.

Since watching Anne with an E and reading the Anne of Green gables books I have fallen in love with the great characters! It’s a very cute story with a great setting. Seeing it as a graphic novel was very nice.
I do think I would’ve liked it more with colours though.

Lovely story. I've yet to read Anne of Green Gables, but this was a lovely adaptation that makes me want to pick up the series. Anne and her peers are so loveable and fun to read about and I feel like Crystal Chan and Kuma Chan did a great job at picking the important events in the original to make the story concise but also comprehensive. And the art work was wonderful!

This story from Manga Classics was really nice to read. The manga editions of classic stories are interesting and give readers who might not like the original classics a way to still read them in their own way.

I would never have thought of it, but Anne’s character was sort of meant for Manga. The medium suits the story greatly. I loved how the art realized Anne’s vivid imagination, and I appreciated the moments of word-for-word dialogue taken from the book.

There were a few scenes I wished were longer—even some that were so short it was hardly worth including them—and some scenes didn’t need to be as long as they were (in comparison). Additionally, Aunt Josephine was not nearly present enough in the story, and we can always do with a bit more Gilbert Blythe. But overall this is a lovely adaption of "Anne."

Thank you for Netgalley for providing me with this read!

I didn't even know a manga classic series was a thing! I'm so happy I stumbled upon this lovely manga of a favorite classic.

I reread this book earlier this year and found this adaptation of it to be pretty spot on. The art style is very nice. I loved seeing Anne in this format and how the story played out. Anne is a character I'll always adore because of her wonderful way of looking at things. I'm glad I got a chance to read it in this form!

"Anne with an E" is one of my favorite series, I loved the story of young Anne Shirley and her new family at Green Gables and Avonlea. In love and at the same time devastated by the cancellation of the series, I decided to take refuge in other formats of this story.

In this unique volume, we will meet the Cuthbert family, Marilla and Mathew Cuthbert, siblings who adopt a boy to help with the farm work. What is their surprise when the orphanage sends Anne Shirley, a 13-year-old girl. The siblings were expecting a boy, but they would soon realize that what they needed in their lives was an imaginative and talkative young woman like Anne.

Saying something negative about this story would be lying to you. I loved it. I was in love with Anne from the first moment and with her beautiful friendship with Diana Barry. I love the family relationship that the Cuthberts have with young Shirley and how this beautiful family is growing.
If I had to say something negative, it would be time jumps. It was a very extensive work and therefore it is normal that certain scenes or plots were eliminated, but even so, I have enjoyed it very much and it is a novel that I recommend.

I haven't read the original book and so I don't know whether there ate changes in the story in this manga version. But I really enjoyed it. The story was fun and the illustrations were beautiful. It was quite easy to read.

This is my first Manga. So I am not an expert.
I loved the art work. The story was faithful to the Anne of Green Gables story. The description of characters came through in the art. Interesting background and facts at the end of the book were interesting and helpful for me to understand the world of Manga.
I have pre-ordered myself a physical copy. Anne of Green Gables is a favourite book of mine and I this will be a great addition to my collection.

Thank you to #NetGalley and #MangaClassics for a digitally copy for an honest review.

Another beautiful adaptation of a classic that has conquered generations. Anne with her chatty and defiant way needs to learn to live in the new community where she is living now. Gradually, she creates bonds with the siblings who adopt her and also makes friends like Diana.

I found the characterizations very well done and the sweet and light atmosphere of the original book goes well with the graphics, the original text also remained very faithful.

Hoping to publish in manga the other volumes of Anne's series.

5/5 stars
