Most of us have read and loved the story of chirpy little Anne and her life with Marilla, Matthew, Diana and Gilbert in Green Gables. So when I saw that there is this manga version of the novel available, I grabbed at the opportunity.

This manga adaptation is entirely faithful to the book. It doesn't tamper with the story nor does it skip out essential elements as many adaptations do. I really enjoyed reading this graphic version of the popular tale.

Most of the illustrations are gorgeous. Anna and Diana especially have been drawn in a picture-perfect manner, exactly as they are represented in the book. However, I didn't like the way Matthew Cuthbert, my favourite character from the book, was drawn.

I was sorely disappointed to see that the ARC had only BW illustrations. I am sure I would have enjoyed the book even more if I could see the comic as it is going to be published instead of this low-resolution bw version as my feedback would have been more accurate.

In spite of this, the book was fun to read. My rating is affected because of the bw version. But I have no doubt an all-colour illustrated version would be a treat to the eyes. The manga version of this book is sure to create new fans of Anne.

I greatly appreciate that this manga provided reader instructions for those new to reading manga (first time manga reader, here!) Additionally, this edition held true to the original text where many others have failed. I would be confident in offering this as an alternative text for students who may benefit from a more visual edition of this wonderful classic. Very well done.

I’m sure quite a lot of people are familiar with the Anne of Green Gables story, so I won’t elaborate on what the story is about. I will say that I very much hope that “trendy” manga adaptations, such as this excellent one, will open up the story to new readers, and may inspire them to pick up the original as well. I read this as a digital review copy, so perhaps I didn’t get the full effect that a hard copy would give, but I would definitely recommend. I think the hard core Anne fans will get a satisfactory top up here and get a new way to access the story.

My thoughts...
Adaptations are tough sometimes. Fans can easily be disappointed when it is not true to the book (i.e. the new movie adaptation of The Secret Garden). But, when it’s good, it’s really good, just like this Manga Classics adaptation. For fans and those new to Anne with an “E” alike, I think you will enjoy this book. The layout, execution and storyline were wonderful. The illustrations and art work were superb and I just adored Gilbert Blythe. Note: Some dialogues may have been adapted for manga, but it didn’t bother me. I will definitely get a copy of this! I’m really enjoying these Manga Classics.

This was such a nostalgic read for me. I used to love Anne of Green Gables, but it's been years and years since I read it. This manga captured it brilliantly and brought it all back.

The way the story was adapted made it read very smoothly, and the pictures are gorgeous. They capture Anne's imagination and excesses of feeling so well, from her wailing sadness to her transports of joy. The other characters were also brought to life, though none was quite as brilliant as Anne. The Cuthberts were staid and initially, Anne was too much of a whirlwind for them, but they grew together and it was lovely to see.

Now I just want to crack open my old copies and read them again.

This manga has been so well adapted.

I read the first book a few months ago and I would say the manga adaptation is quite accurate!

I love the artstyle and how convenient the art sequence is made to make the reading so apt and simple yet beautiful and charming.

I still cannot believe how accurately it captured all the emotions in the book. I don't know what more to say than it's the perfect adaptation!

I am in love with this manga publishing team ever since I read one of Betty Neels romance adaptations last year and it hasn't disappointed me even once!

So glad I got approved of this ARC from NetGalley.

I'm a fan of these manga adaptations of classics, because I think that they make me more excited to read the classic afterwards, not discourage me, and with some hug classics, it might help a bit with the intimidation.

Anne of Green Gables was already on my tbr, and I've always wanted to read and watch the well-loved Netflix adaptation. It's the story of Anne, the talkative and imaginative orphan, who arrives to Green Gables in Prince Edward Island, to her new family only to discover they actually wanted - and were expecting - a boy to help with the farm, not her. We see her life from there, her relationship with her foster parents, the friendships she forms, and how she wins everybody over with her charm. I had some issues with how the adults treated her, but I always liked how she stood up to them.

The art style was sweet but I felt a lot of the events of Anne's life were rushed, also I don't know if this covers more than just The first book in Anne of Green Gables series. I'm excited to read the novel and watch the show, though.

This manga adaptation of the beloved Anne of Green Gables story was a true delight to read, probably one of my favorite Manga Classics. The art was beautiful as always with a Manga Classic, and I loved seeing some of my favorite characters represented in that style. The adapters did a great job of including a thorough amount of the most famous and memorable scenes from the book, separating them under individual chapter headings, while still following the larger chronological order of the narrative. I look forward to seeing what other classic stories these guys put out!

I’ve never read the original that this Manga adaptation was based of off. What I can say is that this is the kind of stuff that might point next generations into picking up the original works. I feel like it was a job well done and will not hesitate to recommend it to people. Thank you Net Galley for accepting my request to read this ARC.

To have Anne of Green Gables which is one of my favorite books made into a manga, It is a dream come true. I loved it so much, everything about this book was beautiful. I loved that the story was shortened in some chapters of the story. It wasn't so bad, I really enjoyed reading it. I loved how Anne, Dianna and Gilbert were drawn, it was so Shojo style. The story here looks like it is mainly focused on the relationship between Anne and Marilla and Mathew. How Marilla ended up accepting and loving Anne. I really had a good time reading this manga and I hope that many readers from all age will give it a chance and read it. For those who never read the book, it could be a good opportunity to be introduced to this classic of the Canadian literature.

Ever since I first read a Manga Classic, I've been waiting for them to adapt Anne of Green Gables, and it did not disappoint! I love, love, love seeing the characters and story come to life in the manga art style. The illustrations are fantastic and their hair is gorgeous (especially Gilbert's!).

I also love that since this is a manga we get a glimpse into the minds and thoughts of other characters, not just Anne's. It was interesting to see Matthew's, Marilla's, and Gilbert's initial thoughts about Anne and during other iconic moments from the story. The art style also lends itself well to exploring Anne's imagination.

I really enjoyed reading this adaptation and it makes me want to reread the Anne series and watch the movies!

I'm getting acquainted with this classic in a reverse order - first I watched the Netflix show, then read this beatiful manga without ever having read the actual books.

To look at this story through a manga lens was very interesting. I really liked the cute art and how true it stayed to the text of the novel (I recognised some lines from the show which - I assume - are direct quotes from the book).

Overall, highly recommend to anyone who misses Anne and wants to relieve the beloved story presented in a new format.

This was my first manga comic book, It was a bit different in format than the regular comic book so it took few chapters for me to adjust, but I enjoyed it thoroughly the sketch work and narration of the story is great and Anne with E, she is a big-hearted girl and her character arc was beautifully established throughout the course of this book. I liked the overall presentation of the story.

This is awesome. I read Anne of Green Gables with my class this past school year. While they enjoyed the story, they found it very wordy and sometimes difficult to understand (many new vocabulary words). This version completely solves every problem they seemed to have with the novel! I love the art, and the way they explain how to correctly read a Manga. The list of characters (complete with picture) was very useful, and I enjoyed being able to see the action scenes (Gilbert and "carrots" was one of my favourites to see in this Manga).

I would absolutely recommend having this available for students, especially as the novel is lengthy and wordy, whereas the story is wholesome and appropriate for younger ages. This would bridge the gap - somewhat.

I think everyone knows the story of Anne (with an E), be it because they read the book, or watched the latest series, of some of its multiples adaptations. This manga is an AWESOME READ for ANYONE who enjoyed ANY of those things.

The story unfolds pretty similar to the original work, but it comes with AMAZING art and great pace; clean drawings that allows us to not only follow the story but also see -vividly- Anne’s imagination and THAT WAS GREAT. Anne imagination is what makes this story what it is, so it was great to have it draw all over the pages.

The characters design is SO pretty, you instantly fall in love with them. It was a pleasure to come back to this story in this format.

I have mixed feelings about this one. The artwork for the characters seemed uneven to me, with younger characters, drawn in a cute, manga style and older characters drawn in a more realistic style. The disparity was distracting to me at times.

The pacing was also really uneven. The first several chapters showed things happening, with beautiful illustrations and funny dialogue, but later chapters switched to huge time jumps with exposition in little voiceover boxes and no action or dialogue. It felt like the book tried to contain too much story in a single volume.

That said, I enjoyed reading it, and I felt legitimate emotional reactions to the emotional plot points (I’ll keep this spoiler-free, in case anyone else, like me, has never read the original books). The illustrations of Anne, Diana, and Gil were all super-cute and perfect, and I really liked the background/scenery work.

I haven’t read the original books of “Anne of Green Gables” but I enjoyed this manga adaptation, the portrayal of friendship and family relations, and the positivity and imagination of Anne.

This manga was incredible! I loved the way the original story was represented with a focus on the main friendships and relationships. I felt like the reader is given the right amount of information about Anne's character without being overwhelmed by the dense. writing of the original novel. Furthermore, the art style was perfect for I felt it represented the characters giving us a clear idea of the key aspects of their personality (for example Anne's eyes were very expressive throughout the entire book and one can clearly see the display of her emotions).

Manga Classics offers another beautiful and stylish look at a story that readers know well. These books are ideal for the classroom and sure to engage a wide audience -- the ideal work to introduce new generations to works that have been handed down.
