I received a copy of the book from Netgalley to review. Thank you for the opportunity.
An interesting read with good writing that really evoked the time. I enjoyed following this story with plenty of action and drama. It felt curiously timeless.
A good read.

I was not sure when I started this book if I had mistaken it for a children’s book. However, I am so glad that I continued to read it. I could not put the book down. I was absorbed by the descriptions of life as an immigrant from Greece to USA. Set in the 1950’s -60’s with the hardships and poverty of life for many in 50’s Greece, it’s sobering and alarming that history repeated itself to some extent in Greece in 21st century. Much to love about this book including traditions, culture, belonging, love, and hope.
Thank you to NetGalley for providing me with a copy of this book for an honest review.

I think this is a case of where the cover of this book is very misleading. To me this cover says this is a children’s story, and as thus I started to read it to my 8 year old son, and he certainly enjoyed the start as there were plenty of animal references (he’s obsessed with animals), but quickly waned as we realised this isn’t really a children’s story. However, I carried on with it myself and found it to be a multigenerational story of a family that emigrates from Greece to USA. It starts in the 1950’s and runs through to the late 1960’s. There are many themes explored here such as cultural traditions, coming of age, family discord and forgiveness. I had a Greek friend growing up so for me personally this brought back many memories of our friendship and the time I spent with her family. I particularly enjoyed the quotes from literature at the start of every chapter, and I always enjoy a good book club suggested questions at the end of a novel. Once I had gotten over the fact this book was nothing what I was expecting, I enjoyed it but like I say, that cover lead me to believe this was something very different. Never judge a book by its cover folks! 3.5 stars.

It's 1956 and Sophie goes to the zoo with her brother. I liked the characters. I liked reading how Sophie and Niko got along. I liked the dialogue. I didn't think the tone was too cutesy
