This book is incredible. It's a book for everyone, teaching us how to use our voice, train our voice, and exercise our voice. And why not exercise our voice like we exercise the rest of our body? I love how the author shared her own stories, and that of her clients, which include clients like Common and Halle Berry. Anyone who speaks, anyone on video or podcasting, would benefit from this book. But in my opinion even people who just speak in conversation with others could benefit from this book. I love the 4 week exercise training at the end. I love the stories and everything about this book. Definitely something to keep on hand.

“Words mean more than what is set down on paper. It takes the human voice to infuse them with deeper meaning.” —⁣ Maya Angelou⁣

I liked The Power of Voice: A Guide to Making Yourself Heard by Denise Woods, a professional vocal coach who has worked with several Hollywood stars. In this book, Denise offers tips for relaxation and breathing along with vocal exercises. She shares anecdotes from her coaching experience and tools for readers to understand the power of voice as a way to communicate, be heard, and connect with audiences, no matter how big or small.

I’ve always been confident in my skills with the written word, but certainly have room to improve with spoken words aka: voice. I personally got the most out of Chapter 6 — Beyond Words and Chapter 9 — Powers of Persuasion but know different readers will connect with different parts. There’s something for everyone in this helpful book.

This is a well-written, thoughtful, value-add book. Denise Woods cares for the readers as much as she does her clients. She is indeed living her vision to help all those she can to feel empowered through their effective communication. The book is jam-packed with instructional advice, and Denise’s step-wise process. Thank you Denise!

The Power of Voice by Denise Woods is a non-fiction title from a vocal coach who shares why utilizing our voice is so important and how we can most authentically and effectively use our voice. The author shares her background which is incredibly interesting and she has worked with amazing artists like Common. Her story about how Common's modesty also reflected in his speech patterns meaning he frequently held his voice back and took up less space in the conversation. I really resonated with speaking up less frequently and choosing to make yourself smaller in professional settings to not appear arrogant or "too much". Her quote “You are a gift to the world, and if you don’t give us this gift fully, you are robbing us of who you are” was very powerful.

I also found it interesting how important our body language is to our voice. As someone who is a researcher in how the body moves, I understand that your body tenseness (i.e. shrugging up shoulders) can affect things like how much oxygen you get during a workout. However I never connected how a tense body can also affect your communication! The author gives many tips related to this and points out that jaw tension is one of the most important factors to proper vocalization. Beyond the physical factors, the book also highlights the importance of storytelling and how to tell an effective story. Clearly based on how easy this was to read the author is very effective at this.

Overall this was an excellent book that made me think about a topic I never really thought too much about previously. I highly recommend this book if you are interested at all in communicating more effectively.

Many thanks to the publisher HarperOne and Netgalley for the ARC in return for an honest review.

In THE POWER OF VOICE, Denise Woods shares the wisdom, experience, and warmth that her clients worldwide have learned to enjoy from her. In simple, straightforward, and honest prose, Woods guides and instructs the reader to own their voice and make the most of their gift. It would be difficult to imagine a more timely, more genuinely pleasurable way for a person to ground themselves in who they are and own their power. Reading her book has given me the motivation to work with the voice I have now versus the one I had many years ago and to listen, to truly listen to others and what their voices offer. A transformational read that feels like spending time with a wise, treasured friend. I received an advance copy of this book from NetGalley and the publisher in exchange for my unbiased review.

Denise knows her stuff- Opera singer, graduate of Jullard, actress and voice coach to celebrities. She shares stories of famous clients she has worked with the help them find their authentic voice. Her tips to improve speech are one part coach- “do this” and one part cheerleader “ you are worth it, expand of the possibilities to be all you can be, and now is the time to shine your light. “ I just love her.
Through out each chapter there are numerous exercises that can be done at home.

My one complaint is that I had a hard time understanding what she was explaining- and determining if i do any of the things she describes. She uses correct terms, and gives pretty detailed descriptions of the position of the tongue and the hard or soft palate, but I’m lost.
I think would be an excellent as an audio book- where you could hear the difference between the sounds.

Good resource to improve your speech through some proven techniques. The book is full of exercises and antidotes related to the exercises to reaffirm why you are doing them.

The Power of Voice by Denise Woods provides an interesting study on voice and vocal challenges that people often encounter. In her vast experience, Woods relays stories of celebrities, public speakers, and clients who needed vocal therapy. She has worked with well-known celebrities, as well as with people within the general public. Most of the stories are relatable and understandable as many of us may suffer from these same challenges. Also within the book are vocal exercises that one can do on their own to improve articulation and vocal power. I personally would like to have seen more information on overcoming public speaking fears, but for the most part, the book was dedicated to vocalization only.

I loved this book! As someone who's a perfectionist but also often struggles with speaking up and speaking confidently, I've really benefitted from Denise Woods's guided advice and exercises.

This book is divided into five distinct parts: Relax, Breath, Voice, Articulation and Communication. Within each, the author uses an approachable, conversational tone which I personally found very effective - it doesn't feel like I'm doing homework. There are plentiful personal stories I could resonate with. Finally, the exercises in every chapter have been super effective for me - for example recording myself read/say certain things and then analyze myself.

When I first reached for this book, I thought that it might not be that great because how can I train The Power of Voice without a teacher who would give me individual advice. While that would be useful, this guide gave me enough knowledge and really good exercises that I've seen much improvement even without anyone's help.

How frustrating is it to be told by all the different sources the things you must do to be successful in life? This book definitely does NOT do that. It instead takes an empathetic approach and gives bite size approaches and allows you to have kindness and patience with yourself when dealing with life. This is so necessary for everyone to read in life. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I didn't find the book to be spectacular, and did not really feel a connection to what Denise Woods was saying and the tips she gave. Unfortunately, the book was not it for me.

If you are looking to improve your speech for any reason, there are helpful tips throughout this book that address varying voice problems.

The author weaves stories of those she has coached with applies some of the techniques to storytelling but also can feel a bit excessive if you’re used to more direct, how-to texts.

A good balance of both with a series of exercises to DIY, it’s an entertaining read.

Denise Woods writes a text to be shared, drawing on experience and identity. The impact of shaping and sharing voice and believing in one’s own journey is a powerful message. A book to be read widely and highly recommended.

Lots of stories, many are interesting but not my personal preference. Useful exercises, but I sometimes felt a struggle to understand the connections of why to do certain things. Overall built a good experience but didn't quite achieve what I was expecting from the book blurb about the power of speaking voice.
