Little Red the hen loves it when Henry reads books to the chickens in the coop. But when Henry stops bringing books and brings a video game instead, Little Red tries her best to tell him that books are better.

I can relate to Little Red because I am forever trying to get my niece and nephews to read more instead playing games on the tablet or computer. The illustrations were brillant and the story was really engaging.

Highly recommended to anyone who has a love of books or has children.

Received a review copy from the publisher and NetGalley. All thoughts are my own and in no way influenced by the aforementioned.

This is a cute little book about how books and reading build the imagination more than video games do.

This book is so funny, it will appeal to children of all ages even if they think the book is too young for them! A very original concept.

Red Hen loves when Henry reads his library books to her after school. When Henry finds a new electronic toy to play with instead, Red misses hearing the fun stories. Will she be able to tell Henry how she feels when she doesn't know how to speak Boy?

This is a good lesson for children and adults about the relationships missed when we spend too much time on electronics. It was a very quick read aloud.

What a cute book! And a useful one too!

Henry is a little fellow who enjoys reading books to his chickens. And one of the chickens, named Red, loves the adventures that Henry recounts. But one fine day, when Henry comes into the coop with a video game, the chickens devise a plan to get their reading time back.

I loved how the book puts across its message in an easy way. Especially in today’s day and age where most children prefer screens to pages, this book can come as a timely reminder of how much fun reading can be. I just wish the ending were a bit smoother. It ends too abruptly.

The illustrations are reminiscent of old-time children’s books. Simple, straightforward and appealing sketches.
If you are looking for an easy, independent read for your youngster, this will be a great option. But more than that, this book would serve wonderfully as a bedtime read. There are enough sound words in the book for a creative reader to go crazy with voice effects. A note of warning though: your children might start squawking “buk-buk” after this story! 😂 😂

4.5 stars from me.

Thank you to NetGalley and Hunt Haven Press for the ARC of the book in exchange for an honest review.

The book is brightly illustrated with a fair amount of detail, making it a lovely book to look at. If you’re needing to open up a discussion about too much screen time, this book could help you do so in a fun way. I highly recommend you add it to your book collection. Lisa

Henry is a young boy who loves to read. Every day he brings books to the chicken coop and reads to them. Little Red and the other chickens all love when Henry visits and reads to them. One day, Henry does not bring a book, but a video game. He basically ignores the chickens over several day. They need to let Henry know they want him to read to them. What they do next is quite a hoot. I read this to my granddaughter when we had sleepover and she loved it. I do recommend you not read this one before bed, because she was "bawking" all over the place when I was trying to calm her down. I really liked the idea that Henry loved reading but got sidetracked by a video game. It took the chickens to send a message, but Henry realizes that reading is important and a great way to spend time with another person, or in this case chicken. The story was cute and the illustrations were also well done. They added to the story and my granddaughter loved them. I do recommend this one.

The librarian in me LOVES this. And I think kids will too. It’s about being too distracted by electronic gadgets to remember to read, and that animals like hearing stories just as much as humans. Plus, when a great storyteller starts making the chicken sounds and the Book-Book-kaka-Book, the kids are going to laugh so hard!

When the desperation to read a book strikes!

This story is exactly that.

The little boy used to read books to the chickens everyday but one day he turns to playing virtual games.

The chickens desperately wanted him to read books to them. They find a way to let him know in the end.

Such a cute little story.

The illustrations are awesome

Thank you, author/artist and the publisher, for the advance reading copy.

Beautiful graphics, so colourful.
I shared reading this with one of my brothers fiancé’s friends child. (Bit of a mouthful there!)

We each had to read it over and over.

The little boy visited the chickens in the coop each afternoon and read a book. The chickens loved it.

But one day he turned up with a little hand held game which didn’t interact with the chickens at all.

He sat there having fun, ignoring them, not noticing them but fully having fun all on his own.

This reminded me of us adults who go visit someone and spend all their time on they’re phone!

In fact the little one we were reading this too sort of said….
Why did he visit the chickens with his game when he didn’t play with them in their home?
Good question!

Loved this book.
Great for kids of any age 0-12 I think! And us with devices!

What a cute little story about the love of books and how computer games can make kids forget everything else!

The illustrations were lovely and colorful and just right for 3-4 year olds. Mentions all the stuff my 3 year old loves! And the message is clear and good!

Little Red loved listening to Henry reading his books, but one day, he brought an electronic game with him instead, and stopped reading to them. What's a book-loving chicken to do?

Charmingly illustrated, The Chicken who Loved Books is a reminder that books bring people together more than flashy noisy games. We could look deeper and discuss digital additction (which is a very real thing, even in children), and how reading with someone can help bring people back. It's a reminder to parents to put away their phones and read to their kids when asked; it's a reminder to children to pry their eyes away from screens.

Perhaps a little heavy-handed, though. While the determined chook was amusing, the rest of the book fell a little flat for my book-loving kids' tastes.

**Many thanks to NetGalley for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review**

Chickens Don’t Like Screen Time!

In this story, a little red chicken and the other hens in the coop love it when their boy comes to visit them and read them books. One day, he doesn't bring books but a gaming device. He ignores the chickens while he plays with it. The little red chicken tries to get his attention by making her squawk sound like “book”! The other hens join in. First, the boy does not understand, but then he realizes the hens are talking to him and mends his ways. The book is brightly illustrated with a fair amount of detail, making it a lovely book to look at. If you're needing to open up a discussion about too much screen time, this book could help you do so in a fun way.

Little Red is one determined chicken! She wants to hear stories. Henry brings a video game with him and she is not thrilled with the change. She finally gets his attention from the screen he's looking at and Henry brings more books.

The Chicken Who Loved Books by Angela Elwell Hunt
4.5 Stars
This book is a winner! The illustrations are fantastic, and the moral is bang on. Henry is a little boy who reads stories to his chicken friends each day after school. But he gets a video game and stops reading to play games. He ignores the chickens, and one of them is mighty upset. Finally, the chickens get his attention and show that they want to read books.
Kiddos with noses in their phones rather than books should give this a read. Even chickens love books, so why not humans? The illustrations are so colorful and bright that I’m sure kids will love this one as a picture book.
Thank you, NetGalley and Hunt Haven Press, for the ARC.

The Chicken Who Loved Books is a sweet story with wonderful artistry! The chickens found a very clever way to communicate that books are better than video games. Two thumbs up for this wonderful read!
