Maxine and her mangled witticisms had me chortling with laughter at almost every other page!

Alex was totally depressed and morose - he just wanted to escape his loveless, go-nowhere life, and Brussels was as far away as he could think of to go. He's pretty much broke, so he posts an ad on a Car Share Ap, seeking a passenger to share his expenses. Little did Alex know that Fate was sending him help - in more ways that one - in the form of the redoubtable Maxine!

High-spirited Maxine has lived a full, adventure-filled life, but she is now over ninety years old and has decided to make a graceful exit from life. Maxine refuses to continue to moulder away in that terrible retirement home she is incarcerated in. She has made certain arrangements at a hospital in Brussels to end her life. She just needs transportation to get her from France to Brussels: enter Alex and his Car Share ad!

What follows is one riotous madcap adventure after the other. Maxine and Alex were such adorable "partners in crime." And I agree with another Goodreads Reviewer about that magical Mary Poppins purse!. I literally fell out of my armchair from laughing so hard during the gas station scene!

The author has promised us one final chapter - a sort of unofficial Epilogue. I will be clicking on the link in the Author's Acknowledgement as soon as I finish posting this review. I loved this story from beginning to end. I think I now understand why some readers love serialized novels. (I have never previously been a fan!) I wanted Maxine and Alex's story to go on indefinitely. My rating: all the stars for this wonderful slapstick comedy!

Loved, loved, loved it. Great characters, plenty of humour and a gripping plot.
The characters are well thought and I loved their relationship.
I laughed but this story also made me reflect.

Alex is a 25 y/o suffering from depression as he can't get the girl he loves. He decides to drive down to Brussels to heal his heart.

Ninety year old Maxine (Max) is looking for a car share to Brussels to visit a clinic for her illness.

What starts off on a slightly wrong foot ends up in a journey of a lifetime. I could almost see myself travelling along with them.

A laugh a minute riot, and such a feel good book, I am going to read this one many times and definitely recommending this friends and family to get over the covid blues.

Alex is depressed and heart broken. In an attempt to find a connection he is heading to Brussels. Maxine is 90 and she has her own reasons for wanting to go to Brussels. When Alex and Max end up car sharing, both of their lives will never be the same.

The Car Share is full of funny banter and over the top action. More importantly, it, hits upon truths of what it is to be alive, no matter what your age.

I enjoyed reading car share. There were plenty of moments that made me laugh. I appreciated that the story also exposed the scars and trauma that lead Alex and Max to make their road trip. These two will stick with me.

Alex & Max are on a road trip to Brussels. They are going to be your favorite odd couple when you read their story. There may be seven decades in between them in age, but they are connected in spirit. I loved the immediate bond that developed between them and the fierce protectiveness they showed for each other. 48 hours in a Renault Twingo works wonders for both of them and there are a ton of surprises along the way. Perhaps both of them have more treasures to discover in life than they realized. Includes a their road trip play list and an offer for one last chapter. Yes, please.

4 stars. And this book gave me a hangover. I couldn’t let go of Maxine and Alex yet so I asked the author Zoe Brisby for the extra chapter.

It’s an unlikely duo: a 25 year old and a woman of a certain age .(old age, but don’t tell Maxine that). Both have their own reasons for taking this trip (to Brussels). And along the way, they become friends. Also along the way, the both become hunted by the authorities - but you gotta read the book to know why.

It’s sweet, the miscommunication between the two are funny, and I love how they are well, changed at the end. Happy sigh. Reminds me that people are put in our part for a reason.

I would describe The Car Share as a cute story with cute characters and a novel that was impossible to put down. From the moment we first met Max and Alex I instantly fell in love with them and couldn’t wait to see how the novel unfolded. Brilliantly written, I look forward to reading more from this author. I simply adored this delightful tale! Fabulous characters on a crazy adventure, getting into scrapes along the way. Some really funny parts - particularly the fumbled phrases!

A little bit bonkers, characters who don't seem to have a filter and say what they think, slightly crazy plot and very conversational. The premise of this book looked great, but sadly it wasn't for me.

The Car Share by Zoe Brisby - 4⭐️

The Car Share is the loviest story, of two individuals - Alex, a young man suffering with depression and Max, a ninety year old woman who share a ride that changes their lives forever. It's full of unexpected turns, but it's so heartwarming to see the friendship between them both blossom.

You'll finish this book and feel like not only were you a fly on the window in the car with them, but that you know both these characters like they were your friends. This won't be the last Zoe Brisby book that I read. <3

This book leaves you with the best advice - “Bumper cars are like life. To keep moving, you have to dodge the other cars. You can choose to play it safe and stay at the edge, but that’s terribly boring! To have fun, to live, you have to take risks. You have to get in the thick of it and be ready to take a blow or give one when necessary. Plus, life and bumper cars are both rides that don’t last long, so you have to enjoy them while you can.”

Sweet and wonderful read. Taken a common trope of road trips and spun it beautifully. Definitely will recommend to others for a summer read.

Oh this is a funny, comical book which deals with quite sad and emotional issues..
It follows Maxine whose 90 who travels to Brussels with Alex a twenty five year old man whose suffering from depression and is trying to heal his heart. He is humiliated after declaring his love that was not reciprocated.
It’s a charming read as we get to see their friendship develop and we follow their adventures. I laughed out loud lots of times and thought this was a funny book.

Sometimes you come across a delightful story when you're not even looking for it. I read the blurb for this on Netgalley and picked it up expecting a decent, light-hearted story and something to take my mind off some heavy reading. It turned out to be so much more!

Maxine and Alex are such an odd duo to be sharing a ride together, each with their own issues and backstories and each unapologetically true to their characters. A ninety year old woman with Alzheimer's and a young man jilted and in depression, both on the road to Brussels with a private plan of their own. Along the way, they bond, share unlikely adventures and regale the reader with lots of laughs. What do you expect from such an odd friendship?

I loved the way the characters were written. The author presents them layer by layer and it helps you forge a connection with them too. I am utterly smitten by Maxine and her oddball personality. Alex hits closer to home - a young guy with modern day worries and insecurities. There is so much that is clearly fiction about this road trip (a few larger than life scenes) however, you cannot help but laugh along with these weirdos.

This may possibly be one of my favorite reads of this year and I would recommend this to everyone interested in slice-of-life comedies - look out for this upcoming release soon!

The Car Share was a fun ride. Ninety year old , Maxine, has plans to end her life in Brusells, after realising she's experiencing Alzheimer's symptoms. Alex is twenty six year old and is depressed. He's heading out to Brussels to follow a love interest of his.
This was a comedy of errors. The two unlikely comrades find themselves in quite the kerfuffle. There were implausible scenarios and plot aspects that would require one's suspension of disbelief.
But there were plenty of amusing and touching moments throughout the journey.
This was a feel-good novel, whose embrace didn't quite melt me.

Opposites meet when 20-something year old Alex, depressed from heartbreak gives a loft to 90-something year old Maxine. Both have their own reasons for going to Brussels, but when the media reports Maxine missing and Alex as the kidnapper, their trip suddenly becomes not just about getting there, but not getting caught.

I loved the idea of this book - road trips are great because they are a liminal space, a transformative window between a fixed 'before' and a (somewhat) fixed 'future' (at least the characters have an idea of what they *expect* to happen). Road trip books are quite literally abut the journey, about changing where you are, mentally as well as physically. So anyways, I love them, as a genre.

I didn't love this book, though. I didn't feel like I got to know the characters in depth, and the way that the writing jumped from one to the other made it a bit confusing at times. It also felt a little too heavy-handed sometimes.. You want the characters to have some sort of aha-moment, but I prefer them to be subtle and not talked through like here.

Really sorry to say I didn’t enjoy this snd I stopped 23% through which is really Unusual for me. I think the lack of description in terms of the route they were taking and the places they were stopping along the way made it really hard for me to connect with the characters.

‘The Car Share’ follows a 90-year-old spunky, eccentric woman and a heartbroken, depressed 25-year-old man who through an online car share service are traveling together to ride to Brussels. They each have their own reasons for their travels but this matchup ends up turning into an unexpected adventure and the start of a beautiful friendship that will change their lives forever.

This story at its core is about rediscovering the joy of life and how no matter how old you are, there is always more life to live and dreams to be had. Maxine and Alex’s friendship was so fun to read and see evolve. I loved their dark humor and Maxine’s eccentric and sometimes strange yet heartwarming personality. I don’t want to give away their reasons for travels because I didn’t know beforehand and I appreciated the added suspense to see how their journey ends. It was a great surprise with plot twists I did not predict but was happy at the end.

Alex sees everything in black and white and is worried and doubtful about the future. Maxine is filled with joy, youth, and wisdom, some she stole from Kung Fu Panda or the Dalai Lama. As well as a problem with expressions like saying “You sound like you have a dog in your throat” or “You must steep things in perspective”.

These two make a unique yet charming pair that fights, forms a deep connection and understanding and love for each other while pushing each other to see their life beyond their own restrictions. I learned some life lessons from them both and had many laughs.

One of my favorite quotes from Maxine was “Let the normal people do their own thing! They’re boring! Stop thinking that others have it better than you; you don’t know anything about it”. We all need a Maxine in our life.

I hope you all pick up a copy and love them as much as I did.

This book has a great premise but seems way too far fetched to live up to the hype. An elderly woman and a young man who wind up in a carshare situation to save the cost of traveling to Brussels. She suffers from Alzheimer’s. He suffers from depression. She’s hoping to end her life once they reach their destination. He’s putting a last ditch effort in to the hopes of beginning his.

There are a lot of cute moments but they seem to skip from one wild situation to another without a moments breath. I love the Maxine character - she's everything you want to be as a 95 year old woman who lived her life to the fullest. Alex character seems out of his element. I kept having to remind myself that he was a straight 25 year old.

The story while cute was just to out there to be a great read. It would make for a wonderful movie if cast correctly. Perhaps Bette White as Max and a young Michael Cera as Alex.
