I really enjoyed the ambiance, setting, and themes in this. It gets gory but if you're going into it expecting horror and able to tolerate gore you should be fine. I liked the development between Murphy and Joy and overall thought it was a good read!

this was a really well done story, I was hooked from the first page. I enjoyed getting to know Murphy and Joy as characters and their story. The world was really interesting and I hope to see more.

I've had this on my shelf for a hot min. It sort of fell on the back-burner. Glad I picked this back up to finish it finally.

Here we follow Murphy who has had the worst luck any Fallen could ever have for the last seventy years. The Collector is a title Murphy never wanted but was given and he can't seem to get the job done...he needs to collect a soul. Joy is a practitioner of one of the world's oldest professions....assassin. Brought together in a bar by a job and dropped into the political machinations of the Above and Below, Murphy and Joy have to decide where their loyalties lie.

This was so good. I really couldn't put it down! I adored Murphy and Joy and I was so invested in what was going to happen next!! I wasn't sure what was going to happen!

Oooo this was a fun take on the whole Heaven/Hell and Angel/Demon thing! It was so creative and a fresh breath in the UF and paranormal genre. It was so entertaining. The dynamic between Murphy and Joy was witty and fun and their banter/convos were a joy.

I do wish this world and the afterlife was a little more fleshed out. I wanted to understand and get more detail. Maybe we'll get another book and we'll get to see more and learn more. I have a lot of questions still.

In the end, I had a lot of fun with this one! Loved the characters and I loved how creative this story and the world were. I do wish we learned more about this world (Above, Middle, and Below). This seemed to be the top of the iceberg for sure. I would love a sequel! I needed a good book like this one. I had two mehs. Overall, I shall stamp this with 4 stars.

"May you always have the confidence of a drag queen."

I genuinely thought I wouldn't finish Murphy's Law. It took me a while to get into the story. Don't get me wrong, I am a huge lover of fantasy and angels / demons, but I think just the beginning fell flat for me. I was not a fan of the two gory scenes, and I ultimately skipped those chapters, cause of it.

By the end of the book, I ended up really liking the characters and became a huge fan of Murphy and Joy.

I really enjoyed the chapter titles and the quotes at the beginning of them, some giving a reference to the events in the book.

"Don't flatter yourself. I only look up to you because I'm short."

"Who doesn't love puppies? Sociopaths, that's who."

"It's okay if you don't like me. Not everyone has good taste."

I thought the idea for this sounded really fun, with a similar vibe to Good Omens. Unfortunately, it really didn't live up to my expectations. While there were definite fun bits, the plot felt a bit bloated, and there were too many recaps and flashbacks covering the same event.

The dialogue got better in the end, but was initially really stilted, with too much exposition and info dumping. Joy's character, too, seemed strangely flat for one of the main two characters, and she came off quite childlike, sometimes.

Also, potential spoiler, but Joy is asexual and at one point this gets attributed to previous trauma, which I found really annoying - asexuality is the same as being gay or straight or bi, it's a sexual orientation, not a trauma response, and it's innate.

Overall, I was left with the impression of something that could have been really good, but needed a lot more editing before it was released.

I ended up enjoying this book way more than I anticipated when I began it. The first few chapters were a slow burn and bored me quite a bit, I was dangerously close to DNF-ing, but I pressed on. The characters, Murphy and Joy, were quite likeable. I didn't mind Bell as a secondary character. The storyline was great and kept my attention. There were a few action scenes, but the content throughout was enough to keep me wanting more. I ended up finishing this book in a day, it held my focus that well once it finally picked up. All in all, I ended up enjoying it, and despite the slow start, I'd say it was a solid 3.5 star from me.

It was very hard to connect with any of the characters, and the writing style was too.. corny? Which is fine when I'm in need of a fun bizarre book to guiltily read, I guess.

I remember liking the book, but it's been so long since I read it, that this review will be pretty short. (Always get that review up while the book is fresh in your mind!)

The characters were likeable, and the humour was funny (occasionally), the story wasn't too engaging with me thoough. It's not a bad book, but it is pretty average.

As said, the characters are likeable, but I didn't feel like they were fleshed out. We see a little into Murphy's thinking and we learn a lot about Joy's past, but learning someones backstory isn't the same as fleshing them out.
The humour was hit and miss. Sometimes it gave me a little chuckle and other times it would fly over my head. At least the book didn't make me cringe (that I remember).

Now the story. This is probably where it let me down the most. There are some twists and turns. but it all feels a little cliche to me. Maybe I've read this kind of story too many times, of Heaven vs Hell and unexpectedly *feign shock* the bad guy is an Angel... I guess I was hoping for something different this time round and with my expectations not met, it was a little bit of a let down.

In the end, it was still a good read, I never fell like DNFing, but if you asked me if you should read it? I would shrug my shoulders... maybe worth a read if you want something small and easy to read.

I really liked this book, it has a great mix of horror, comedy, action, sadness, and, heartfelt moments, I loved the characters, there the sort of people I would hang out with (if they were not assassins and demons), the story was well written and witty and interesting.

I also liked the reference to the ‘Pinky and the Brain’ cartoon, a favourite from my youth.
I’m looking forward to reading more books in the series.

Highly recommended!

I would recommend this book for this story alone, *Thank you to NetGalley for providing me with a copy of the book in exchange for a honest review.*

TW: Excessive violence & mentions of sexual assult. For A Mature Audience.

This was a lot of fun. I always love character driven stories. Both Murphy and Joy were everything. Murphy was such a great character. You couldn't help but feel for him. Ture to his name if something bad could happen it really did. I also loved the adition of Joy. She was so chaotic and the perfect pairing to Murphy. The action scenes were great and I liked all the quotes that appeared before every chapter. The only thing that stopped it from being 5 stars was the pacing. Some times we would spend too long on an idea because of the ongoing banter between Murphy and Joy, while other times I feel as if we should have spent more time going over other ideas. Beyond that it was a really enjoyable romp.

This was such a gritty, fun read! I haven't read much paranormal fiction, but wow this surprised me. I liked the writing, the characters were hilarious, and the cover is beautiful!

I stopped at 20%. Nothing against the story so far, I just couldn't get into the omniscience / head hopping (I can never quite tell the difference, but either way, it's not for me). I'm giving it 3 stars as a sort of neutral rating since the story might be good, this seems to be a fun and interesting sort of take on angels and demons, but the POV just isn't for me.

Murphy is one of the Fallen, sent by the lords of the hell to the Earth, to become a new Collector of souls. His life was pretty quiet before he met Joy, and Leviathan gave them both a job. This wasn't a normal one, and Murphy needed to speak with the angels and demons to prevent the possible revolt on the Hell. Their journey isn't safe, and their life will be in constant danger.
Well, what can I say about this book. The cover is gorgeous, and the synopsis is really good: angels and demons are my favorite troupe. When I started to read this book, it gave me some real Constantine vibes, and I loved it. The characters are pretty cool, and I loved Murphy even it was a fallen one, or demon. It was amazing reading about the famous lords of the hell, and the well known for all of us archangels. The descriptions about the hell were terrifying. It was a bit hard to read some tortures, they were so descriptive that I felt them for myself. The pacing was delightfully good, and the story was pretty interesting. But... There is always a but... I didn't like how Joy was introduced in this story. It felt so unnatural and forced. Plus, sometimes I didn't understand why Joy wanted to participate so eager ñly in all this story. The angels and demons were a bit stereotypical, and I would love to se them a little different from we all know them.
But the book was good and I've enjoyed it. So if you like gore, demons and angels, and a good adventure with some cool characters, this is your book.

This book isn’t what I normally pick up. It was good to a point. I like the relationship between the main characters. They both are ver sassy! It seem though it started to drag toward the end.

I was excited for this book. It is truly unique, but gave me some Constantine vibes with a twist of Good Omens.

The Book began well and I found myself racing through the first half of the book. There was a great mix of action. Character development, especially with Murphy, and some interesting story mechanisms. For me the problems happened around the halfway point. I felt Joy's character became flat, too one dimensional and unfortunately I felt little connection with the majority of characters. The comedic elements grew to a fever pitch and I felt the story became stagnant and a few plot points felt rushed and really irrelevant.

Interesting idea and concept. Good writing in places. It would be interesting to see if the author had a different last half before editors, of if there was an editors hand involved at all.

With Thanks to C.J Pierce and BooksGoSocial for an advanced readers copy of this book.

4 1/2 Stars

I love this book! So much.

Everything from the quirky main characters to the sarcastic chapter titles, this is entirely my jam. The plot was faced paced, and a perfect balance of dark humour and horror, I ended up reading it in one sitting. The writing is easy to read, and the characters easy to connect with.

A professional assassin, Joy and Murphy, a fallen angel who collects souls for Hell, are thrown together in an unlikely pairing in Murphy's Law for Demons. Both hired by Leviathan, a fellow fallen angel, they set out to find a missing person or his 'pet' as he refers to her.
This is an extremely violent and very fun read with some great characterisation, especially Joy, who you feel C.J. Pierce relishes writing about.
There are several threads and characters throughout the book which are set out in preparation for a potential series. Sometimes the plot feels thin but that is never much of an issue as the set pieces and relationship between Joy and Murphy make this a great read.

At first I was very hesitant about this book, but it really surprised me! I devoured this book. Murphy was a very cute character, even a fallen angel can be cute right? I loved the banter between Murphy and Joy. All the characters have a very special place in my heart now. The climax of the story felt rushed and I was expecting something different.
There were a few points that I wished for more. As a debut novel though it was very well written.

I am looking forward to the rest of the series and I want to recommend this book to everyone!!
