Unfortunately, Karliquai didn't really end up working for me.
While I overall enjoyed the writing, it made it hard sometimes to understand what was going on at the moment.
Also, this book reveals many of it's twists to the reader way before the characters find out and it made it hard for me to care for their distress and shock when they got a new information.
Lastly, the horror element was well written, but fell a bit flat for me in the end.

TW: murder (on page), death of a parent (off page)

I started reading this novel thinking that I was going to love it due to the concept and blurb but unfortunately for me the book never really took off.

I found the story repetitive and unoriginal and really couldn’t relate or empathise with the main characters. However, there were glimmers of hope and brilliance in the writing style but unfortunately they just were not sustained throughout the novel.

Yes at times scary and a times horrific which ticks many boxes for horror fans but for me it just left me a little wanting ...

Hi, everyone! My name is Christian and this is my Hobbiblog.

I want to thank Netgalley and the publisher BHC Press for sending me an ebook version of this book.

Karliquai is a new horror fiction story by Rosie Cranie-Higgs that explores the horrifying experiences around a family that had ties to a different dimension. This is a great premise but the plotting drags throughout. I had to DNF this at 54% (my rule is to read at least half before DNFing as some books really pick up from the 30%-40 range) because although the characters were well-written and interesting to read about, plot was glacial and very similar to Cassandra Clare's City of Bones. Both of these books have the same jumping off point of mysterious creature attacks our main female protagonist, then they run away to a "found family" that they happen to have ties to through their parents.

I liked this book while I was reading it but the pacing is the issue and the story is not the best. One strength that I really liked in this book was every horror scene that happened. Rosie had a way to scare and also get us into the heads of these characters when they were met with a supernatural entity and they are trying to survive. I liked those sequences the most but there was too many of the same events going on where our characters are standing around talking with each other, they realize something important for the plot, they go to the next plotpoint and it either goes to a horror scene or more talking.

I really wanted to like this book but I had a tough time sitting down to continue on. It was just okay which is why I gave it 3 stars out of 5. If the plot sounds good to you and you like to read horror stories then this may go better for you. I have no negative feelings towards this book just average.

Read the first few chapters and unfortunately this is going into my DNF... I could not get into the style of writing even though the premise was so promising. Maybe i can give it another try one day but I could not keep up with the writing

Oh WoW! After reading Whiteland in 2020 and seeing Higgs come out with a second book called Karliquai I was ecstatic! I had to request this book! And I might had squealed when I got approved!
So much thanks to NetGalley, BHC Press and Rosie for both of these amazing e-books! Very much appreciated! And I had a ton of fun reading them.

Digging into the island’s past, Charlotte won’t only unearth its supernatural secrets, but also solve the mystery of her own link to this cursed chunk of rock in the Atlantic.

This book.was awesome! Only way in know how to describe it! The writing is like nothing I've read before and honestly that I'd what draws me in! I'm hooked line and sinker! As always the characters are great. Its like you're seriously watching a movie! Amazing!

Again thanks for the approval! And I'm looking forward to reading much more for Rosie!
