I liked this book for kids or even for adults who just want a bit of information about the ancient wonders of the world. The book is really well organized and the pictures were beautiful and showed how grand these monuments might’ve been. There was a lot of information about how the monuments were built, what they meant to the people who built them, and other fun facts!

How the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World Were Built was a beautifully illustrated and informative read. I would recommend for middle grade and homeschoolers who are interested in learning how these ancient structures may have been built. Thank you to NetGalley for the digital ARC in exchange for an honest review.

The wonders of the ancient world were something I learned about very briefly in school, mentioned in passing in a social studies class. We didn't learn about any of them in any depth at all apart from the pyramids. So I learned a fair amount from this book. Apart from the technology of the time, we get the context of the culture that created each wonder, the significance to the people, and the reason each was destroyed. Henkova is careful to give archeological and textual evidence for each fact provided. This book is a prime example of different disciplines coming together to explain ideas.

Wonderful! What a great way to introduce history nonfiction (about construction without gasoline engines) to young people and a good excuse for the rest of us to enjoy the great illustrations of Tomas Svoboda to give substance to the work of Ludmila Henkova. This book solves questions we didn't know to ask, is suited to ESL, and needs to be in local libraries! The local and a visiting grand loved it as much as this grandma!
I requested and received a free temporary ebook copy from Publisher Spotlight for Albatros Media via NetGalley. Thank you!

This book is incredible for young readers that are interested in history, architecture, and simple machines. It's the type of book where you can get as much out of it as you want -- the colorful and engaging illustrations and captions make it easy to fly through the book. It is packed full with fun facts and information that might inspire at-home building adventures :) As a former teacher, this book would've come in handy with our Simple Machines unit.

This book was awesome! I loved reading through it and learning a lot- it shows what the wonders "actually looked like" and it did a detailed and thorough job of explaining the mechanisms behind what it took to build these structures. Would be an excellent addition to any collection. Definitely getting this for my library!

Can you name the seven wonders of the ancient world?

I’m a bit chagrined to admit that I indeed struggle. Somehow, I always seem to forget about the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus…

If you’re like me, or you have young readers in your life who are curious about the ancient world, How the Wonders of the World Were Built provides a lovely visual and narrative tour of the seven monuments, aka “the seven wonders of the world.” The book opens with a perspective-generating introduction that prompts readers to think about creative impulse and execution. Accompanying illustrations bring readers from the ancient world into the present.

Each of the seven entries provides information about the monument’s history and construction. Visual images supplement the narrative with macro and micro perspectives, including maps, depictions of the monument at various stages of completion, and annotated details.

Especially impressive is how the narrative voice strives to speak not only from the present but also from within the ancient world, providing young readers an opportunity to empathize with a human impulse to be remembered through creative acts. The art design’s strong lines and vibrant colors capture the narrative’s enthusiasm and poignancy.

Thank you for the review copy, NetGalley!

If I could only visit one of the lost wonders, I think I would choose the Hanging Gardens of Babylon. How about you?

This book is a rare gem. It is bound to keep kids’ attention with captivating illustrations, historical information, building techniques… The text starts with the most captivating and mysterious Egyptian pyramids. While we don’t know how the pyramids were built in the desert that lacks wood and stone, the uncertainty doesn’t stop wonder. "How the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World Were Built" is a need-to-have book, perfect for boredom busters in every classroom/library.

This is a visually appealing nonfiction book that will draw interest from the casual browser who is only interested in the pictures and those interested in learning more by reading the text. I look forward to purchasing this book for my library.

Accompanying a lesson or storytime about ancient civilizations & ancient architecture, this would be an excellent book. It's well-written and informative and the illustrations are great. However, the Seven Wonders list excludes so many geographic regions & cultures, so I would never just read it on its own. If I could find another book about wonders such as the Taj Mahal, Chichen Itza, and Angkor Wat to read alongside this one, I might purchase it.

So, so cool! Kid me would have spent hours poring over this, studying the detailed illustrations and soaking up all the trivia, how-tos, and contextual information. This is so very readable and interesting--key concepts are broken into manageable chunks and are conveyed in a casual, humorous style to avoid the boredom and alienation that can come from dry historical tomes. The nerdy kids will be in heaven and even reluctant readers will find plenty to engage with.

This would be an awesome enrichment book for elementary and even into middle grades and would make a great addition to classroom and school libraries!

Many thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review!

A fantastic and colourful children’s non-fiction book filled with many fantastic facts!

This book was read with my 7 year old, and he marvelled at the illustrations and the captions. He (and I!) both learned many new things, and the tone of the book and text is perfect for an audience of his age.
