I must firstly apologise for the amount of time it has taken me to provide a review of this book, my health was rather bad for quite some time, something that had me in hospital on numerous occasions and simply didnt leave me with the time I once had to do what I love most.

Unfortunately that does mean I have missed the archive date for many of these books, so It would feel unjust throwing any review together without being able to pay attention to each novel properly.

However, I am now back to reading as before and look forward to sharing my honest reviews as always going forward. I thank you f0r the patience and understanding throughout x

First things first, let's just get it out of the way and admit that the book isn't a psychological thriller, or even a domestic one.
It was more women/general fiction; it was character driven and the "mystery" aspect didn't feel like the main focus. The book was more focused on Ali and her journey through early motherhood and lifelong grief.
In some parts, I felt nearly suffocated because of the whirlwind of thoughts and feelings Ali had, and after speculation, I realized that this showed how great the writing is. The author captured the dilemmas of mental health issues with such finesse, it was amazing to read.
The anxiety and PTSD symptoms were written in such a vivid way that you can't help but feel overwhelmed with them, too.
The book was dragging in some parts, there were a few chapters that had no purpose other than describing scenery and feelings.
The characters were obviously morally flawed, but they were so well written that I was more interested in knowing how would they end up instead of fixating on whether they were good people or not.
The ending was the same level of the rest of the book, which wasn't ideal since I prefer endings to be more distinctive.
Overall, it was an enjoyable and intriguing book.

I've read every book CE Rose has written and loved them all. This was no exception. Rose has a gift for writing descriptions that make you feel like part of the setting -- and characters so well developed that you feel like yu know them personally. "The House on the Water's Edge" was a roller coaster ride with an ending that I never saw coming. I loved it.

The House on the Waters Edge - C.E Rose
As Ali is adjusting to being a first time Mom, she is looking forward to her mother's visit and having a bit of support. When tragedy strikes and Ali's mother is in a tragic car accident, Ali is left trying to decipher her last world's "There is something I really need to tell you."
Unable to let it go, Ali and baby Joe head up to spend some time at her mother's home, tieing up loose ends and beginning the process of packing. Ali hopes to uncover whatever secrets might be left behind, not expecting to open the door to her own childhood and past.
This book was a bit slow to begin, but as the story got going, it was definitely a worth while read. Ali was a relatable character who was struggling with the loneliness that comes with being a mom. I was rooting for her to find her answers and herself the whole time. The twists, oh wow the twists. Once they started coming, they didn't stop.
If looking for a book that might blow your mind a bit, this one!!!! ⭐⭐⭐⭐/5!

Captivating!!!

A suspense thriller that kept my interest from start to finish! Well written with complex characters with lots of secrets.

Main character Ali Baker is a professional barrister who’s had quite a successful career to date. Now a new mom, who recently gave birth to her first child, Ali is struggling with all the new demands. Take away a husband who is no help & add her mother’s unexpected death Ali is struggling to say the least.

Forced to deal with all these issues & then some… Ali returns home to settle her mother’s estate. While doing so Ali uncovers secrets she never knew. Can Ali rise above & deal & confront these issues or will she continue to spiral downward???

This book was like mystery and suspense had a baby, while the plot was a slow burn and took awhile to build on itself, once it got rolling, all the layers fell into place really well.

First off, The House on the Water's Edge is not your run-of-the-mill proper thriller; it's more a domestic suspense novel. The book is completely in a first-person narrative by the central character Ali aka Alison; she is a new mother, struggling to cope with the demands of motherhood, who has just found out that her mother has passed away in a road accident. Her mother had tried to contact repeatedly till before the accident. Ali, who was already struggling a lot, just couldn't make the time to talk to her and this puts on a bigger load of guilt on top of her already existing insecurities and gulit about not being a great mother.

This whole situation begins to place a strain on her marriage and her sometimes insensitive husband isn't being a big help either. Everything combined bring her almost to the edge of a breakdown. Finally Ali leaves to her mother's house in Norfolk hoping to get some answers regarding her mother and also to get some perspective about her life.

At Norfolk, as Ali begins to dig deeper into her parents' pasts, she discovers many secrets - some which astonish her and some that give some clarity on her childhood and her parents. In fact, from about half way through the book the reader is treated to one revelation after another so much that at one point I just stopped guessing what secret might next be exposed and instead just concentrated on reading through the book. By the end of the book, both Ali and us readers finally understand the various secrets each person had carried with them and the various dynamics these secrets created.

Author C.E.Rose has a unique style of narration wherein the reader can easily relate with all the characters to some extent. However, these characters are not people you would want to meet in your real life. Most of them keep dark secrets and are people struggling one way or another. The author has managed to create an atmospheric story with a malevolent presence with just these regular characters and of course, with also a lots of twists and turns, some of which were easy to guess but there were also many that astonish you.

For all these positives, the book just didn't grab me as I would have liked it to. The pacing of the story was very slow at the start and didn't pick up spectacularly in the latter part too. In fact, it's fair to call it a show-burner. But you can try this book out if you like to read spectacular atmospheric stories showcasing a slight psychological bent.

A book that pulled at my heart strings in some ways where secrets abounded in the life of Ali when she discovered secrets after her death.
Intriguing story, well linked subplots, developed characters kept me hooked to the story.

"Ali may finally discover her mother's secrets... but at what cost?" How well do you know your Mother? Sure she's a super hero, running the house and kissing scrapes while baking cookies but is there something more to her? A past? Decisions she wouldn't want anyone to ever know she had to make? CE Rose wrote a magnificent and startling book exploring how little we know about our parents and asks, "Do you really want to know?"

This book delves into the intricacies of life, people and their emotions and could very easily happen in real life. Life really is about the decisions we make and sometimes you do have to learn to let things to have peace.
I enjoyed this so much I signed on later at work so I could finish. It was an absolutely absorbing twisty tale with strong characters. Full marks to the author.

I thoroughly enjoyed this novel, but don’t believe it is correctly categorized in its description as a ‘thriller’. There were elements of mystery, domestic suspense, and even romance within its well executed pages.

The descriptions and characterizations were very well drawn – as one can expect from Caroline England who is using the pen name C.E. Rose in this instance. Some of the characters were appealing and others not so much. I didn’t care for Ali’s husband at all. I loved Ali’s mother’s gardener, George and pictured him as looking like the actor Tom Burke.

The setting, in the Norfolk Broads, added to my enjoyment of the book and gave some scenes added strength.

I liked the protagonist and could empathize with her situation. A former criminal lawyer, now not working, and with an infant son, she is struggling to cope with her new ‘normal’. Family secrets are always a huge enticement to me when choosing a book, and there were some doozies here. There were two major plot twists, one I anticipated, and one I was surprised by.

This is a slow burner, but worth the journey. It visited the nature vs. nurture debate and would make a great movie. Recommended!

The House on the Water’s Edge centers around Ali who finds herself having new additions to her life full of drama. From a cheating husband, to a dead mom, a unsettled infant, her life gets way worse page by page. While this book is one I’d rate 3/5, the lack of stars is because of the fact they the author tried to put any bad thing that could ever happen to someone into the pages and it kind of drove me away from the book.

A highly enjoyable thriller with clever little misdirections to lead you willingly down the wrong path until that ending. When you get to the heart of it, the backstory itself its hold your breath and hang on.

A complex mystery for a new ,sleep deprived mother to solve, what was her mother going to tell her. Add in problems in her marriage and you have the scenario. Lots of twists to unravel.

'The House On The Water's Edge' by C.E. Rose is a book I was looking forward to as soon as I knew this author had written a new book. Caroline England is C.E. Rose and she always writes a story to keep you glued to your kindle, or book depending on the format you read. I love every book she has released and couldn't wait to sit down and get started.
Since the birth of baby Joe five weeks ago, Ali Baker has been struggling to cope. Starved of sleep and haunted by painful memories from the past, she’s a million miles away from the polished, professional barrister she has worked so hard to become.
Then her mother tragically and unexpectedly dies, leaving Ali an orphan. Haunted by her loss, Ali can’t forget her mother's last words to her: There is something I really need to tell you...
Heading back to the Norfolk Broads to sort her mother's things, Ali is plunged into memories of her family’s picture-perfect summers on the river.
But as she starts to uncover secrets hidden within the isolated house, Ali is drawn into a dark web that threatens to destroy everything she believed about her childhood – and her very sanity. Ali may finally discover her mother's secrets... but at what cost?
I found myself hooked into this book right from the prologue. A slow burner of a book with a tension that begins to build as Ali is at her mothers house sorting herself and her mothers stuff out. As the story unfolds her life as she knows it, begins to unravel. The author has created Ali, a character whose mind is all over the place, so well. We don't really know how reliable she is and that alone builds the intrigue in the story as we have no clue what is real or if Ali is imagining it. As the secrets begin to come to the surface and the memories begin to slowly be remembered, the twists and turns of this story start to reveal the shocks as we reach the end of this emotional, twisty and utterly compelling book.
Thank you to ZooLoo's Book Tours Hera Books NetGalley and C.E. Rose for the copy of the book.

The House on The Water's Edge is a very interesting read although not my usual genre. We follow Ali, a married woman who has just had a baby. Her move from professional barrister to mother has not gone smoothly and she is struggling to cope. When her mother unexpectedly dies she moves into her old house and starts to uncover life changing secrets.

Mental health issues are heavily discussed near the start of this one and I do think they are very accurate and real. Especially the feelings of embarrassment, weakness and the fear that no-one will believe you.

I liked the main character but I think she definitely made up too many excuses for her husbands behaviour. The husband is truly awful and I really would have liked to have seen his actions examined more closely.

Overall, I enjoyed this book but it seriously gave me whiplash! For the majority of the book not that much is happening but it still somehow manages to keep your interest, and then in the last quarter, there are so many twists I couldn't keep up! I do think that if they had been spread out a bit more, they would have seemed more believable and I would have liked more information on some of them. Maybe even some proper flashbacks would have been great.

I will leave you with my favourite quote from the book as there were little moments of humour scattered thoughout which I liked.

"Without stopping at the doors, she continued to propel me down the aisle like a very keen Mr Rochester"
