There's nothing happening. I'm at 18% and there's no stakes, no world building, the characters are flat, there's no plotline... I don't want to read a book that jumps from one scene to another without making any sense. The book sounded so great, I love books about Demons but nooope this sucked...

So, I didn't love this book. The main character's love interest in the first half of the book was "icky" to me. The magical tracking and stalking was supposed to come off as endearing, I guess, but it really just took a turn for creepy when the MC asks a bunch to have it shut off and Jensen refuses to do so. I also had an issue with the stylistic separation of what was external in Riss's head and was flashbacks. It felt disjointed at times and got kind of confusing.

I was able to read this book as an ARC thanks to NetGalley, so thanks NetGalley!
This was a fun easy read. The concept was interesting & kept me hooked throughout. I loved that is was fast paced read. World building was great and very interesting, characters were good (love a good strong female character), and there was some spice! (Always a nice surprise, lol) I am relatively new to spicy books 😂 but this bad boy had a lot of spice, lots of sex, so if you enjoy that, you might like this. Overall, I enjoyed the read and I’d be interested to read the next installment. I rated this a 3/5 stars.

I really wanted to like this book—the concept is pretty interesting. I really love demon/monster hunters and all the angst from killing ‘bad’ things. However, this book fell so flat for me.

From plot development to character development, I felt like the author never reached her full potential. The only enjoyable (?—at the very least amusing) part of this whole book was how she wrote the pandemic into the story. For some reason, the idea of a bada** demon hunter being like ‘hold up lemme put on my mask’ and really going after her anti-masker peers was very amusing.

But into my biggest problem with this book—the central relationship. Riss’ relationship with Jenkens was one of the most toxic relationships I’ve ever read? Both are so manipulative, constantly gaslighting each other and being quite abusive. I really hate how they play it off as a domme/sub thing or ‘unconditional love.’ Let me tell you, I don’t care if the abuse is out of a place of love or fear of losing someone—if your partner is this toxic, you need to let them go. I couldn’t even enjoy the smut scenes since I was so disturbed by how horrible they are to each other.

None of the characters were likable at all, except possibly Lily. Riss was insufferable as a MC and there’s a line between snarky and just straight up impulsive and rude, and Riss crossed that line about 10 minutes into the book.

Lastly, the plot was very subpar and super predictable. And WARNINGGG—this ends on a CLIFFHANGER!! I hate how the plot was mainly pushed by Riss’ impulsiveness and failure to think of the consequences. But if you’re looking for a quick read with a good smattering of short smut scenes and you can overlook the toxic relationships and predictable plot, this book is for you.

This book could have had great opportunities! The plot was really good, but it could've been better if the writing was better.
The writing felt like on of those wattpad fan fics you read or just a wattpad story which really disappointed me because this book could have gone flying high with bright colors.
Otherwise, it was a good story.

I will start out by saying that the demon hunter premise of Halfway Wicked could have been great! Kent does a good job of building the world around the characters, as well as sneaking in a demon started pandemic that brings up too fresh memories and anxieties of recent events (in a good way if that’s possible to believe). .

However, this book was written as a gender swapped, Supernatural fan-fic, and you can’t tell me otherwise. The main character “Riss” has a whoa-is-me, whiny attitude and an insufferable internal dialogue. She is constantly making selfish decisions for her younger, albeit ADULT, sister and those around her.. There is minimal, misplaced *spice* at the inappropriate times. The sweet personality of her sister, Lilly, does not help diminish the main characters chihuahua-like personality while she whines on and on (and on) about being “twice marked” and being “forced” to demon hunt. The plot twists are just enough to help the plot along, but they don’t help make Riss any less annoying.

Strong characters in a fast read. Snarky, sassy, spunky girls who are twice marked. Story moves at a good pace. I could go for less sex in the book but overall a good enjoyable read. Thanks #netgalley and #BooksGoSocial for the eARC in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are mine.

As much as I wanted to enjoy this, something just didn't click for me. The plot is one I would normally behind which made me excited to read it. However, I didn't connect to any of the characters and really lost interest when the 'romance' element kicked in. Maybe I wasn't in the right frame of mind for it, but I would have been happier with just the rest of it. There doesn't need to be coupling up all the time.

A fun theme of demon hunters, warlocks, Lucifer, angels, and soul redemption - plus what's a party without Lilith! Not a new theme, but a fun one and handled with a few new twists - hoping the main character gets over being so self-involved and impulsive as the series continues, that was a little distracting and I couldn't really root for her. But enjoyable regardless.

- fantasy with strong heaven & hell theme
- first person narrative
- sarky main character
- lots of sex

"Coughing and clutching his throat, Aston reared to the side, falling against a counter, knocking several empty beer bottles to the floor.
'Who are you?' he choked out.
I raised my left arm, allowing the bangles to slide up to my elbow, exposing my marks.
'I'm doubly damned, and today is your unlucky day.'"

Marked by an angel from heaven, and an angel from hell, the Wilde sisters Riss and Lily have to destroy enough demons to warrant an entrance to heaven when they meet their end. However, when fellow friends and demon hunters start to turn up dead, they wonder if something darker than demons is afoot.

Okay, well I loved the storyline in this. It was fast paced, detailed, and held a basis of believability. The world building was fascinating. I loved almost all the characters in the story, too.

Almost all.

Unfortunately the main character Riss was a swing and miss for me. I felt that she was written as sarcastic but came across as spiteful and I couldn't get to like her whatsoever. I suppose she was something of an antihero looking back but the way she talks and treats people left me with a grimace on my face.

Also - now this comes from a reader who loves a spicy book - but there is way too much sex in this book, it actually felt like filler, or a way to prolong the storyline. It didn't feel natural at all. This was a shame as the connection between Riss and Jensen did feel real.

As characters, Lily and Jensen interested me the most. Lily felt fragile yet strong. Jensen was mysterious yet communicative. The characters all complimented each other and the storyline.

I would 100% read the next instalment of the series. The writer is truly brilliant with their magical storyline and has a way of writing powerful female characters. I feel with the potential of Riss' character developing I would enjoy the Wildes on the Hunt series immensely.

Stubborn. Snarky. Sassy. Sisters. This was a fun fast read. Twice-marked, double the trouble. Not my usual read, but very fun and entertaining. Thanks to NetGalley for the advance read in exchange for my honest review. Thank you Dara Kent for showing that us stubborn snarky gals have a lot to offer too.

Riss is contrary. Mouthy. Incredibly stubborn. That being said her story was a very good read because her personality is difficult. Considering she is twice marked gives her leeway with the snark.

Overall, Halfway Wicked is a quick read (finished in one sitting) and has an enjoyable story! Although the demon-fighting trope is quite popular, the concept of sisters being marked by both heaven and hell is refreshing and was really interesting to read. I wished there had been more to the plot given there are a few times when information is essentially listed without much build-up or explanation, causing some areas to feel like sections were missing that could contribute to the plotline and these could have been fleshed out or alluded to more clearly in previous parts of the story.

However, the world setting was well done and the way characters were portrayed and interacted with each other was realistic and gave me quite the ride with my own emotions, like I was a part of the group. I did hope for more character development and this to be done more gradually than the almost sudden changes that were written to go along with the slightly uneven pace of the plot and twists.

I am excited for the next book in the series! I will post to Goodreads closer to the publication date.

Halfway Wicked blends a bundle of urban fantasy tropes into an entertaining romp. While somewhat lacking in original themes and unusual plot points, it is, nonetheless, a diverting and reasonably enoyable story.

Not the most sophisticated book in terms of narrative structure or prose, Halfway Wicked's pacing is somewhat uneven, which isn't helped by the occasional info dump. However, its vivid scene-setting and its characters' spirited interactions keep the story moving along without getting bogged down in its flaws for long.

This is a fast, fun read perhaps best suited to readers who would have enjoyed Supernatural more if the show had starred a pair of spunky, self-sacrificing sisters with capital-A attitude and capital-P problems. If demons and CW-style drama are your thing, this one's for you.
