had so much fun reading this book, the story is so adorable and the illustrations were so well done and charming, there’s so many little details in every page that I couldn’t stop but be mesmerized by it all. I will definitely be recommending it! Thank you netgalley and the publisher for this early copy

An adventure comic for kids in the vein of Asterix. In this one Beowulf and his brother Grendel are sold as gladiators in the arena of Rome. It's a weird mish-mash of Roman history as the arena is there but so are Remus and Romulus and stories from the founding of Rome are retold.

Written by my 8yo:

Kid Beowulf
It was about a kid called Beowulf and his brother Grendel.
The best bit of the book was when they all became friends again.
The worst bit of the story was when one of the wolf brothers kidnapped a whole bunch of women to save his little brother.
I would recommend this book to wulf (see what I did there ?) lovers because two of the characters were raised by a wolf.
How many stars I would give this book is 3000,000,000,000,000,000,000,00(3 sextillion stars)

Kid Beowulf - The Tarpein Rock is a graphic novel retelling of part of the classic tale of Beowulf and Grendel. It opens with a beautifully illustrated prologue of the tale of Romulus and Remus in verse, setting the scene for the story ahead. Beowulf and Grendel become lost in Italy, and must participate in gladitorial battles in order to win their freedom. Interwoven with their story, we have Romulus and Remus, also stuck in the gladiatorial pits, and the two sets of twins must survive on their wits to escape.

The story does deviate from the original classic saga, but it's an accessible entry into these legends, and was a hit with my kiddo. I was unaware that this was book 4 in a series, but it works well as a standalone. I'll keep a lookout for the rest of the series, though!

~Many thanks to Alexis Fajardo and NetGalley for providing an advance copy of this book in exchange for an honest review~

Sorry, this book was not for at all. I love ancient history and I thought this book would be for me, I enjoyed the art style but could not get on with the writing style. Due to this, I have not posted any reviews online. If you would still like me to post a review, please let me know.

Young readers will be excited to learn more about Beowulf and Grendel in Book 4 of the Kid Beowulf series : The Tarpein Rock. The twins find themselves lost in Italy and must fight in warrior battles in order to get out. During this time, they also come face-to-face with another set of twins, Romulus and Remus. The battle separates both sets of brothers and they must find ways to accomplish their plans.

Even though the slight jump back and forth in time could be confusing at first, the author does a great job in telling a smooth story from start to finish. The character development is well done and young readers will definitely be able to identify them from text and illustration. Even though this version of the story differs slightly from the classic myth, this book will be entertaining and could be used as an introduction of the classic folklore.
